A Black man died in the US state of Wisconsin’s Milwaukee after four security guards pinned him down outside a hotel, in what his family members and lawyers have described as “reminiscent of the killing of George Floyd”. Dvontaye Mitchell, 43-year-old, went to the Hyatt Regency hotel on June 30. According to a statement by police, a person was creating ruckus, disturbance and even fought with the security guards when they tried to escort him out of the hotel. Police were called but until then, security guards detained him, as reported by NBC News. Dvontaye Mitchell's family deserves justice and accountability for his tragic death. They are haunted by the memory of his final moments. We must ensure that their memories of Dvontaye — as a loving Milwaukee husband, father, brother, & son — also include justice in his name! pic.twitter.com/KC1REoQwES — Ben Crump (@AttorneyCrump) July 9, 2024 Police added that when they arrived, Mitchell was unresponsive and giving lifesaving measures, he was declared dead. A chilling video of the incident is doing rounds on social media while Mitchell is being pinned down on the ground by four guards. The video was a reminder of the case of George Floyd, who died after being pinned down by a police officer in May 2020. One of the four security guards appeared to hit Mitchell on his head with some object. Mitchell shouted for saving his life and apologising, he said “Please! Help! Please! I’m sorry!” But the guards didn’t heed any attention to it and one of them responded, “Stay down! Stop fighting”. “Everybody in America, after George Floyd, should have trained their employees, especially security personnel, to not put knees on peoples’ backs and peoples’ necks,” said Ben Crump, attorney retained by Mitchell’s family. Police said that it was treating the case as a homicide and that the cause of death still remains unknown. Other than police, The Milwaukee County District Attorney's Office is also investigating the case.
