Washington, DC, filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration on Thursday over the deployment of National Guard troops in the capital.
The lawsuit, lodged in federal court, seeks an order blocking the deployment, arguing it is unconstitutional and violates multiple federal laws.

“Armed soldiers should not be policing American citizens on American soil,” D.C. Attorney General Brian Schwalb said in a post on X. “The forced military occupation of the District of Columbia violates our local autonomy and basic freedoms. It must end.”

Since returning to the White House in January, U.S. President Donald Trump has sought to expand the military’s role domestically, a move critics warn could dangerously extend executive authority and heighten tensions between soldiers and civilians.
Last month, Trump ordered National Guard troops into Washington, D.C., declaring they would “re-establish law, order, and public safety.” He also placed the capital district’s Metropolitan Police Department under direct federal control.
