A portion of a 20-storey residential building partially collapsed Wednesday morning in New York prompting an emergency response from local authorities. The incident occurred at around 8:13 am local time, when the chimney side of the structure gave way, a NYC official told CBS News. No apartments were reported as impacted by the collapse, but the affected section of the building was immediately evacuated as a precaution. The New York City Fire Department (FDNY) shared aerial photos from the scene, showing a large chunk missing from the side of the building. Fire officials confirmed that a major emergency response was underway, with crews assessing the structure and ensuring residents’ safety. The building, located near Alexander Avenue and East 135th Street in Mott Haven, is a multi-dwelling high-rise. According to the FDNY, the partial collapse involved the incinerator shaft, though the exact cause of the structural failure remains under investigation. Operations are ongoing, and authorities have reported no injuries so far. Residents in the impacted section have been evacuated while officials continue to evaluate the safety of the surrounding areas.
