Generally observed two days earlier than Nag Panchami, Hariyali Teej is celebrated on the Shukla Paksha Tritiya in the Shravana month, honouring Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. This year, as per the Gregorian calendar, in 2024, Hariyali Teej will be celebrated on Wednesday, August 7, with the timings as follows:

A vibrant festival deeply rooted in Hindu mythology and cultural traditions, Hariyali Teej celebrates the divine union of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, as well as the arrival of the monsoon season.

According to legend, Parvati underwent 107 reincarnations before finally being able to marry Shiva. On her 108th birth, she was destined to unite with him on the Shukla Paksha Tritiya of Shravan.

During her previous lives, Parvati renounced all worldly ties and spent her days living on dry leaves in her quest for Shiva’s love. However, Shiva, devoted to his vow of celibacy, remained unaware of her feelings.

Realising that she needed to demonstrate her love to capture his attention, Parvati embarked on a challenging journey to the Himalayas, where she immersed herself in deep devotion.

In her dedication, Parvati crafted a Shiva Lingam from sand, symbolising her unwavering love and commitment. Moved by her devotion, Lord Shiva appeared before her and granted her wish, acknowledging her as his wife due to the fast she had observed and the rituals she had performed.

This festival established the belief that any woman who observes the fast with sincerity will receive blessings from Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati.
