As intense heat waves continue to grip North India, passengers aboard a Darbhanga-bound SpiceJet flight were made to wait for over an hour without air conditioning at the Delhi airport, according to ANI. A video showing the passengers sweating uncontrollably, and using flight safety brochures to fan themselves, has taken the Internet by storm.

“SpiceJet passengers travelling from Delhi to Darbhanga (SG 476) had to wait inside an aircraft without air conditioning (AC) for over an hour amid the ongoing heatwave, with several feeling unwell,” ANI wrote on X.

The video sparked outrage on social media. A user commented, “It’s normally happening with several domestic flights due to various reasons. Air travel has increased and do has traffic increased.” Another user wrote, “The same thing happened to me and other passengers on 13th June while we were about to fly from Jeddah to Addis Ababa Airport with Ethopian Airlines, the air-conditioning of flight was turned off for almost 1.5 hours.”

“New India under leadership of PM Modi,” a third user reacted.

A similar incident was reported about Qatar Airways. The passengers aboard a Boeing 777 plane stayed on the tarmac for three hours, without air conditioning, amid heatwave conditions in Athens, Greece. In one video, a passenger was seen stripping off his shirt while others fanned themselves.

Following the incident, Qatar Airways issued an apology. “Qatar Airways sincerely apologizes for the delay to passengers traveling on flight QR204 from Athens (ATH) to Doha (DOH) on Monday, 10 June 2024, which was due to a technical issue,” news outlets reported.
