Shakespeare, or rather Romeo, may have asked ‘What’s in a name?’ Well, as it turns out, quite a lot if you’re called Chris Martin, and you’re not the frontman of the popular band Coldplay. So much so, you can find yourself becoming suddenly famous across India, without having even sung Para… (Paradise, for the uninitiated).
On November 19, British band Coldplay performed its first concert in Mumbai, ending months of waiting by hard-core fans. Not only that, the set brought in other musical stalwarts like Jay Z and Demi Lovato for the Global Citizen Festival, which saw nearly 18,000 people in attendance. While people screeched and shouted in joy as Chris Martin not only sang their favourite numbers, but also crooned to Channa Mereya from Ae Dil Hai Mushkil and the iconic Vande Mataram with AR Rahman at the end, they took to Twitter to thank the rock star for such a fabulous performance.
He tried to apprise everyone of the error by tweeting out a clarification: “To the 500 Indian followers I gained in the last day I’m not in Coldplay. I’m sure Chris was great in Mumbai but I can’t pass on the message”. But apparently that wasn’t enough. So, to further set the record straight, the not-Coldplay Martin even changed his profile picture.

That didn’t quite work either as the numbers still went upwards.

Those who managed to catch his ‘tweet’ seemed to have questions for him any way – from returning the Kohinoor to understanding the difference! Most of which received a response – all in good humour.

But he soon warmed up to the thought of having such a huge fan following in India, and tried to get himself some deals while at it.

Well, non-Coldplay Chris Martin may not draw up the same crowds as Sunday’s event, but by the look of it, we can get a decent-sized theatre quite full should he come down for a gig. Don’t you think?
