Shardiya Navratri Day 6, Maa Katyayani: The nine-day Shardiya, or Shrad Navratri, is an important Hindu festival observed across India, which is observed in the Hindu lunar month of Ashwin during Sharad Ritu, that is, September to October, as per the Gregorian calendar.
Out of the four Navratris—Magha (winter), Chaitra (spring), Ashadha (monsoon), and Shardiya (autumn), this Navratri is regarded as the most significant, which is why it is also known as the Maha Navratri.
This festival is devoted to the nine forms of Goddess Durga, which has already commenced on October 3, 2024, and is set to conclude on October 12, with Dusshera falling on the same day.
Today, October 8, 2024, marks the sixth day of Navratri 2024, dedicated to the worship of Maa Katyayani. According to Drik Panchang, the auspicious timings are:
On the sixth day of Navratri, devotees are encouraged to get up early, take a bath, and change into fresh clothes. Cleanse the space where the puja will be performed and provide new flowers to the Maa Katyayani idol.
Similarly, when reciting mantras and worshipping, devotees must hold lotus flowers in their palms and present honey to the goddess as prasad and bhog in exchange for her blessings.
To vanquish the demonic being Mahishasura, Goddess Parvati assumed the shape of Goddess Katyayani. It was the most violent manifestation of Goddess Parvati, and in this incarnation, Goddess Parvati is known as the warrior goddess.
According to religious scriptures, Goddess Parvati was born at the home of Sage Katya, which is why this form of Goddess Parvati is known as Katyayani.
Goddess Katyayani rides a majestic lion and is represented with four hands and carries a lotus blossom and a sword in her left hand while holding her right hand in Abhaya and Varada Mudras.
Wear red on the sixth day of Navratri, as each day of the festival is connected with a certain colour with symbolic value. On Day 6, the chosen colour is red, which represents passion and love. It is also the most popular colour of chunri offered to the goddess. This colour gives the individual life and vibrancy.
