Dressed modestly in her religious habit and standing barefoot at the starting line, Kerala nun Sister Sabina, 55, left spectators awestruck as she sprinted forward and effortlessly cleared hurdles at a state-level athletics meet.
Originally from Ennappara in Kasaragod, Sister Sabina relocated to Wayanad in 1993. Her athletic journey began in Class 9, competing in national hurdle events. She continued to shine during her college years at university-level competitions. Eventually, her focus shifted to teaching, and she participated less frequently in competitive sports. Today, she serves as a physical education teacher, continuing to share her passion for athletics with her students, said the report.
This race marked her final competitive appearance before retiring. “Next March, I am retiring from my role as a physical education teacher. I wanted to compete one last time before retiring, which is why I came to the State Masters meet,” she explained.
Kerala’s Education Minister V Sivankutty praised her victory, describing it as “a symbol of willpower.” Sharing her photograph on social media, he added that Sister Sabina’s win demonstrates that “age or circumstances are no obstacle to any goal,” highlighting the dedication that continues to inspire both her students and the wider public.
“Despite being 55 years old, this victory achieved in the competition in her nun’s attire is a symbol of willpower. Sister has proven through her own life that age or circumstances are no obstacle to any goal. This teacher’s dedication is an inspiration to her students and the general public alike. I wish Sister Sabina all the best,” he wrote.
