Thomas McMeekin first saw Nancy Gambell some six decades ago, when they were high school students. He had instantly developed a crush on her, but the two went to different colleges and married other people. Now almost 63 years later, the 78-year-olds are planning to get married.
Ten years ago, the pair saw each other at their 50th high school reunion but were still with their spouses, so their conversation did not move beyond pleasantries. McMeekin lives in the Tampa Bay area and Gambell in California, both in the US.
This year, after 10 years since their last meeting, the two reconnected when McMeekin contacted Gambell regarding their upcoming 60th high school reunion. Both of them were single and instantly started talking. They soon became very close.
Earlier this month, McMeekin invited Gambell to Tampa Bay. When Gambell stepped out of the plane and met McMeekin at the airport, she was in for a surprise proposal. After welcoming her, McMeekin got on his knees and proposed to Gambell. She accepted his proposal as onlookers cheered them.
A video of their proposal is going viral on social media. On Wednesday, the popular Instagram account @majicallynews shared a clip of McMeekin’s proposal.
An Instagram user commented on it, “This is beautiful! And, besides being such a special moment, I think it’s so important that he used words of love to ask her to marry him! I see all these proposals, and all the guy does is get on his knee hand or a ring and they hug! Why do you want to marry her what makes her so special? Why do you wanna spend the rest of your life with her why she she spend the rest of her life with you? I need a ring is not a proposal. I think it’s important to say the words. Wishing this beautiful couple a lifetime of happiness, joy, love and fun!! ♥️ 💜 💙 ❤️ 💯 ”.
