In a landmark moment for New York City, Indian-origin politician Zohran Mamdani has been elected as the city’s new mayor, making history as its first-ever Muslim mayor. The 34-year-old state lawmaker’s victory has not only marked a major political milestone but also delivered an unexpectedly cinematic celebration.
As Mamdani wrapped up his victory speech, surrounded by his family, the atmosphere suddenly took on a Bollywood vibe. The crowd erupted in cheers as the iconic song “Dhoom Machale” from the 2004 action hit Dhoom blared through the speakers, a fitting soundtrack to his electrifying win.
Sharing the stage with him were his wife, artist Rama Duwaji, his celebrated filmmaker mother Mira Nair, and his father, scholar Mahmood Mamdani, a family moment that quickly captured hearts online.
Clips of the event have since gone viral, with the video being shared widely on X.
One user wrote, “Never thought I’d see scenes like this. As an Indian, this brings me so much joy. It also proves that hate has no place in a city like NYC! His parents – Ugandan born like mine – are clearly so proud and rightfully so!”
Another chimed in, “Although I don’t care about what’s happening in NYC, this is the coolest sh*t I have ever seen in any political victory speech.” A third added, “So so jealous of my New Yorker friends that were able to attend. 10/10 for the song choice.” Someone else joked, “Sounds like a multiverse crossover somewhere.”
At just 34, Mamdani is also the youngest mayor New York has seen in a century. Running on a progressive platform as a Democratic socialist, he defeated former Governor Andrew Cuomo and Republican Curtis Sliwa in a fiercely contested race.
The election drew global attention, particularly from India, where many were proud to see Mira Nair’s son take one of the world’s most high-profile political offices.
