Are you demure? Are you mindful? When Rory Gilmore from “Gilmore Girls”, Carrie Bradshaw from “Sex and the City”, and Emily Cooper from “Emily in Paris” failed to demonstrate ‘Mindfulness 101’, social media birthed a new trend that is breaking gender discrimination: ‘Very demure, very mindful’. The satirical ‘mantra’ is not just confined to unrealistic standards set for women at work but has taken over every gender and fraternity.
How did ‘Very demure, very mindful’ trend begin?

“You see how I do my makeup for work? Very demure. Very mindful. I don’t come to work with a green-cut crease. I don’t look like a clown when I go to work. I don’t do too much. I’m very mindful while I’m at work. You see how I look very presentable? The way I came to the interview is the way I go to the job,” Lebron said in her video.
“A lot of you girls go to the interview looking like Marge Simpson and go to the job looking like Patty and Selma. Not demure. I’m very modest. I’m very mindful. You see my shirt? Only a little chee chee out, not my cho cho. Be mindful of why they hired you,” she added.

Demure vs Brat
The viral trend was triggered by Charli XCX’s album Brat, which was released in June. It was the British singer who first popularised the word ‘demure’ in her latest album. In a TikTok video, Charli XCX described a brat as “that girl who is a little messy and likes to party and maybe says some dumb things sometimes,” CBS Mornings reported.
After the ‘demure’ trend came into existence, it ignited a debate on ‘Demure’ vs ‘Brat.’ After President Joe Biden stepped down as the Democratic presidential nominee and endorsed Kamala Harris, Charli, in an X post, wrote, “Kamala IS brat.”
