Over the past few years, China has secured its position as a global leader in technological innovation. From introducing humanoid robots to transforming healthcare systems, the country continues to showcase its ability to embrace advanced technology. One striking example features payments by scanning the palm at grocery stores.
The now-viral video shows a man visiting a 7-Eleven convenience store. He buys a bottle of sparkling water and displays the hassle-free payment method through palms. “That’s my WeChat ID and I paid without having my cards or my wallet on me or my phone which is pretty crazy! Mindblowing!” he says in the video.
Sharing the video, an X user wrote, “Indians: Cash is the king. Meanwhile in China!”

The video quickly gained traction with several social media users comparing India’s UPI payment mode to China’s palm payment method. “If someone would have send me this video on 1st April I would consider this video as prank. China is 50 years ahead of rest of the world. Meanwhile in India let’s build one more statue,” a user wrote. “Don’t demean india. Here people use paytm even to buy dhaniya for Rs 10. India is also way ahead than many countries in digital payment and online delivery,” another user commented.
“This is definitely one level up than UPI,” a third user reacted.
Introduced in May 2023, Weixin’s palm recognition service first rolled out on Beijing’s airport express train line and at Shenzhen University. By September, it had rapidly expanded to more than 1,500 7-Eleven stores across Guangdong province, the Debrief reported.
Today, the technology is also being used at power bank rental stations and has applications in various sectors, including retail, transportation, fitness, and education. To use the system, users simply align their palm with a scanner and complete a brief registration through a mobile app, the report said.
