Indian boxer Nishant Dev’s defeat in the boxing quarterfinal round of the men’s 71 kg category at the 2024 Paris Olympics has shocked sports enthusiasts, leading to outrage on social media. Dev lost the quarterfinal event to Mexico’s Marco Verde Alvarez after a split verdict defeat.
Reacting to the news, Randeep Hooda called it “sad”. In a post on X, the actor wrote, “Nishant had won it ..what’s this scoring? Robbed of the medal but won hearts .. Sad!! Many more to go!”

India’s boxing champion Vijender Singh, who won a bronze medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, also questioned the scoring system. “I don’t know what’s the scoring system but I think very close fight..he play so well..koi na bhai (let it go bro!),” he wrote on X.
Nishant Dev’s defeat did not sit well with sports enthusiasts, who accused the judges of being “unfair”. Reacting to the news, a user wrote, “THIS IS ROBBERY!! Nishant Dev was the clear winner. Boxing is so rigged, no one knows how the judges are scoring. No transparency, just unorganised & based on favouritism & luck. WWE matches make more sense than this clownery they calling boxing rn!”
“Nishant Dev, robbed of a medal, is caught up in a major scandal involving corruption, bribery, and fixing of matches, with judges signaling each other to manipulate results. The Olympics has faced similar issues before, with many judges and referees being removed due to suspicious outcomes, showing a consistent lack of fairness and transparency. Justice for Nishant Dev!”
Dev is the fifth Indian boxer to exit the Paris Olympic Games. He lost the quarterfinals 4-1.
