Chess Olympiad 2024: Indian champions recreate Rohit Sharma’s iconic walk as they lift trophy. Watch

India scripted history at the 45th Chess Olympiad in Budapest, Hungary, by winning gold in both the Open as well as Women’s events. While the Indian men’s team lost just one game out of 44, won 27, and drew the remaining games, the women’s team won three games and drew one against Azerbaijan.

Amid several videos of the champions from the event floating on social media, a video of the team celebrating the historic win by recreating Rohit Sharma’s iconic walk while lifting the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 trophy. The viral video shows Tania Sachdev and D Gukesh recreating the walk with their respective trophies in their hand. The walk was first initiated by Lionel Messi during the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

With over 192,00,000 views, the video prompted a sea of praise for the champions. A user wrote, “Many congratulations Team India, you have made the country proud by winning the gold medal.” Another user commented, “This is the closest Gukesh has been to acting as an 18 year old on camera.”

“Looks quite similar to Rohit celebration. Wow what a tournament for us,” a third user reacted.

Meanwhile, business tycoon Anand Mahindra dedicated his #MondayMotivation post to the Indian Chess Olympiad champions. The video captured the moment players were honoured with their medals. “How could these superstars not provide us with added #MondayMotivation? Double Gold medals. Double the motivation. And congratulations @ChessbaseIndia for the entertaining coverage. But even more for your passion & commitment to this incredible game!” he wrote on X.

Apart from D Gukesh, India’s Arjun Erigaisi was named the best performer on Board 3 with 10 wins out of 11 matches. The women’s team, comprising Harika Dronavalli, Divya Deshmukh, Vantika Agrawal, Tania Sachdev, Vaishali Rameshbabu, and Abhijit Kunte secured the gold medal, completing a historic double for India in the 2024 Chess Olympiad.
