The Oppo Reno series has a reputation for continuously pushing the boundaries of design and camera technology with each new device, and the latest additions are no exception. The newly launched Reno 10 Pro and Reno 10 Pro+, are Oppo’s latest flagships that truly embody the pinnacle of the company’s innovation for the masses.

Today, it has become commonplace to encounter smartphones equipped with triple camera setups, even under Rs 10,000. However, many of these options come with basic macro or depth sensors, offering minimal value in terms of photography. And, this is where the Reno 10 Pro sets itself apart. It offers a remarkable triple camera module headlined by a 50 MP wide-angle, 32 MP telephoto, and an 8 MP ultra-wide lens. The camera configuration on the Oppo Reno 10 Pro truly enhances the photography experience.

I have been an ardent advocate for the inclusion of telephoto lenses on mid-range phones. I am genuinely thrilled that the Oppo Reno 10 Pro comes equipped with a 32MP telephoto lens. I have been experimenting with Oppo’s latest phone for nearly two weeks. Read on to discover more about my experience as I examine the device across various metrics. Can it withstand the test of time? Let’s find out.

What’s the deal with the design?

Design is the defining factor for any smartphone, and Oppo has done a commendable job with the Reno 10 Pro. Although a metal frame could have made the Reno 10 Pro feel even more premium, the curved glass sandwich design with a colour-matching plastic frame paired with a curved display works wonders. All these elements seamlessly merge to create a sleek appearance, providing ample grip to hold the device without a case.

The phone comes in two colours — Glossy Purple and Silvery Grey, and I have been testing the purple variant, which also conceals fingerprints and smudges to an extent.

I liked the new camera island which gives the device a distinctive look. However, it protrudes a bit, making the device wobble when placed on a flat surface without a case. The inclusion of an IR blaster was a pleasant surprise, however, a stereo speaker at this price point is a must but the Reno 10 Pro does miss out on the same.

A delightful display tuned for binge-watching

Reno 10 Pro has a 6.7-inch 1.5K resolution curved OLED screen with FHD+ resolution and a fast in-display fingerprint sensor. I felt the Reno 10 Pro’s display to be a tad better than the one on the Realme 10 Pro+ that I recently reviewed. By default, the display is set to vivid mode, which as the name suggests offers slightly booster (saturated) colours. One can always switch to normal mode to experience toned-down life-like colours, while most people including me prefer the default colour tone of the phone.

I liked how dark it gets in a low light situation (does not hurt eyes while scrolling through social media at midnight) and even the sunlight legibility is almost as good as most flagship offerings, making it a great phone for streaming content and even light gaming. The bezels are negligible, making it a wholesome display smartphone.

Peak camera performance

The Reno 10 Pro is an all-out camera-centric device with a 50 MP primary camera, 32 MP telephoto lens, and an 8 MP ultra-wide angle lens. On top of that, the 32 MP selfie shooter is probably one of the best front-facing cameras that I have tested so far. Even in challenging lighting conditions, I felt the selfie camera on the Reno 10 Pro is ahead of the competition.

Despite the presence of an excellent primary shooter, the telephoto lens takes center stage in the Reno 10 Pro. However, with just 2x optical zoom, it is somewhat limiting, especially when compared to the more expensive Reno 10 Pro+ that boasts a periscope zoom lens—my personal favourite—which supports up to 120x digital zoom. Nevertheless, thanks to the higher resolution 32 MP sensor on the Reno 10 Pro, even the photos captured with the telephoto lens exhibit remarkable detail, comparable to those taken with the primary camera.

While it takes excellent shots at 0.6x, 1x, and 2x modes, I felt that the samples at 5x and 20x aren’t practical as they lack details and come out blurry most of the time. The selfie camera has one of the best post-processing that I have seen on any phone of this price range, and even the complete low-light shots look sharp and retain a lot of details with low noise and true-to-life colour accuracy and skin tones.

Performance: Not its strongest suit

The Reno 10 Pro is based on the Snapdragon 778G chip with 12 GB RAM and 256 GB storage. While the phone had no issues in handling day-to-day tasks like web browsing, social media apps, and some light gaming, this phone is just not cut out for heavy usage.

I have been a fan of ColorOS but not the bloatware that the Reno 10 Pro packs. However, the promised 4-year software support should be reassuring for users, who plan on using this device for a long time.

All-day battery life

Despite packing a smaller 4,600 mah battery, the Reno 10 Pro is an all-day battery life device and the 80W fast charging is also a welcome move. Despite using the device on the Jio 5G network for almost five hours a day, the phone could easily offer over five hours of screen-on-time. While it’s not the best battery life that I have experienced on a phone in this class, it’s not the worst either.

Verdict: Excellent looks, exceptional cameras

The Oppo Reno 10 Pro has a few stand-out features like a dedicated telephoto lens, premium looks, and even extended battery life. Similarly, it also misses out on a few basic features like stereo speaker setup. While it’s slightly on the expensive side for what it offers, I feel many may appreciate what the Reno 10 Pro offers.

For me, who spent a lot of money on the Galaxy S23 Ultra just for its telephoto lens, the Reno 10 Pro is a winner. It would be my go-to recommendation for a mid-range phone with a stellar camera setup.
