Apple has developed a ChatGPT-like iPhone app, codenamed Veritas, to test a major Siri update that is planned for official release in 2026, Bloomberg reported.

The app is being used internally by Apple’s AI division to evaluate new Siri features, such as searching personal data and performing in-app actions. Veritas is not intended for public release and is solely for internal testing.

This new app highlights Apple’s plans to launch a revamped version of Siri, its voice-based assistant, which is now targeted for release as early as March. However, the project has faced delays due to engineering challenges.

Apple is leveraging large language models by combining its own technology with third-party models, and has reportedly discussed partnerships with OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google.

Apple has disappointed users and investors with its unclear AI strategy. Analysts initially hoped that the launch of Apple Intelligence would change that perception, but the rollout was riddled with issues.

Meanwhile, competitors like OpenAI and Google have aggressively expanded their AI offerings. For example, Google is rapidly integrating its Gemini assistant into Android. Android 16, the latest version of the operating system used by Samsung and OnePlus phones, allows Gemini to control apps, including Google Maps and YouTube.

OpenAI, the maker of ChatGPT, has also pushed forward with its AI strategy. In May, Apple’s former design chief Jony Ive sold his nascent startup IO to OpenAI for $6.5 billion. In the announcement, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman stated that the company is currently working on new hardware devices.
