The manner in which Microsoft packaged the entire launch (and pre-launch) of Windows 10 made many believe that Windows 10 will be primarily available for free. Even most pirates believed that they can easily get hold of a genuine copy. However, you really cannot expect Microsoft to hand over its “greatest Windows ever” just like that.
Windows 10 is now available for purchase at Microsoft Store. Windows 10 Home is priced at Rs 7,999 while Windows 10 Pro costs Rs 14,999. But why are we talking about the price of Windows 10 when it was supposed to be free?
Only genuine Windows 7 SP1 and Windows 8.1, both Home and Pro users can reserve a free copy. The free upgrade option is available only till 29 July 2016. For other versions of Windows, you will have to buy it. So, if you are eligible for a free copy, this is what you need to do:
1) First things first. Back up your data
2) Update your Windows OS (multiple times) to get the latest Windows 7 SP 1 or Windows 8.1 version
3) Wait for Windows 10 pop up at the taskbar to reserve your copy
4) Once reserved, you will have to wait for Microsoft to give you your free Windows 10 copy. This will take time. Don’t expect to get it ASAP.
Note that even after following these steps, you might not get you the reserve Windows 10 notification at all. In such scenario, you can use the Windows 10 reservation tool.
If you are running XP or Vista or wish to make your own PC, then you will have to buy Windows 10 and install it on your system with the essential minimum hardware. Microsoft insists that you use Windows 10 in a newer PC.
