After years of teasing, Spotify is finally bringing lossless audio, delivering the “highest music audio quality” on the music streaming platform, and enabling listeners to experience uncompressed music as intended by the artist. Originally known as “Spotify HiFi”, the music streaming platform had initially announced support for “CD-quality, lossless audio format” back in 2021, but for reasons unknown, had delayed it since then.

In a blog post, Spotify says support for lossless audio is already rolling out for Premium listeners “in select markets” and users will get a notification once the new music streaming quality is available for them.

For those wondering, Spotify’s Lossless quality allows you to stream music in up to 24-bit/44.1 kHz FLAC format and is available for both new and older releases. Spotify is also rolling out a range of settings for Wi-Fi, cellular, and downloads, which allow you to choose between Low, Normal, High, Very High, and Lossless music quality, and view the data consumption for each of these quality presets.

Spotify’s Lossless quality is available on mobile, desktop, tablets and other devices that support Spotify Connect, including those from Sony, Bose, Sennheiser and Samsung. However, support for Sonos and Amazon devices will be arriving next month.

To enable Lossless, open the Spotify app and tap on your profile icon from the top left. Now, head over to Settings & Privacy and tap on “Media Quality”. Here, you will be able to choose if you want to enable Lossless for Wi-Fi, cellular and downloads. One thing to note here is that these settings will only apply to the device you are using, meaning you will have to enable Lossless manually on every device.

Spotify says it will bring Lossless to more than 50 markets in the month of October. However, Premium subscribers in Australia, Austria, Czechia, Denmark, Germany, Japan, New Zealand, the Netherlands, Portugal, Sweden, the US, and the UK can already switch to Lossless. This means Indian users may have to wait a few more weeks before the music streaming quality option is available in the country.
