Grand Theft Auto 6 (GTA 6) has been delayed once again, with Rockstar Games announcing a new release date of November 19, 2026. The highly anticipated title was originally slated for release in May 2026, following an earlier postponement from autumn 2025.
In a statement on Thursday, Rockstar said the additional months were needed to deliver the level of polish that players “expect and deserve.” The company thanked fans for their patience, adding that it was “incredibly excited” for players to explore Leonida, a fictional US state inspired by Florida, and Vice City, modelled on Miami.
The announcement came shortly after 31 employees were fired from Rockstar’s UK studios on October 30. The Independent Workers’ Union of Great Britain (IWGB), which represents video game workers, accused the company of laying off staff to discourage unionisation. Protests were held outside Rockstar’s offices in Edinburgh and London following the announcement.
Rockstar has remained largely silent about GTA 6’s development, releasing only two trailers so far. The second trailer, launched earlier this year, garnered over 100 million views and offered a deeper look at protagonists Jason and Lucia, a criminal couple navigating life in Leonida. The footage also teased new locations, vehicles, and characters.
The previous entry, Grand Theft Auto V, was released in 2013 and remains the second-best-selling video game of all time. Despite being over a decade old, its online mode continues to attract millions of active players.
Rockstar Games is known for its perfectionism and history of delays. Its last major title, Red Dead Redemption 2, was also postponed by nearly a year before release.
With soaring development costs and growing expectations for open-world realism, publishers are becoming increasingly cautious about releasing unfinished products. GTA 6 is already being described as one of the most expensive games ever made and is expected to shatter sales records upon launch, though whether it will live up to the hype remains to be seen.
