Google’s biggest yearly event – Google I/O 2023 – is scheduled for tonight, and the company is expected to lift the curtains on a slew of products at the event, spanning from exciting hardware like the Pixel Fold to new software like Android 14 and AI features. To help you prepare for the big day, we have compiled a list of the major products that Google is likely to announce at the event.

Pixel tablet

While the Android world is brimming with tablets, few come close to offering an experience similar to that of the iPad, and the gap has only widened following the Apple Silicon upgrade. The Google Pixel tablet could change that as it’s expected to put practicality at the forefront.

A couple of days back, the Pixel tablet’s specs leaked nearly in their entirety. The device will be powered by Google’s Tensor G2 chip, and have an 11-inch LCD display with a 2560 x 1600 resolution, 8GB of RAM, and up to 256GB of storage. It will also support USI 2.0 stylus, Wi-Fi 6, and two eight-megapixel cameras. The tablet also reportedly comes with a wireless dock, allowing it to double up as a speaker and a smart display.

Pixel Fold

Google has finally confirmed the rumours: it is launching its first foldable phone, the Pixel Fold. The device was teased in a tweet and a video on May 4, and more details are expected to be revealed at Google I/O on May 10.

The Pixel Fold features a full outer display that opens up to a larger inner display, similar to Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold phones. The inner display is rumoured to measure 7.69 inches, while the outer one could be 5.79 inches. The phone also has a rear camera bump that looks similar to other Pixel phones, though the exact setup is unknown. The Pixel Fold will run on Android 14, which is likely to have some adaptive elements for the folding screen. It will compete with other foldable phones from Samsung, Huawei, Oppo, and others.

Pixel 7a

The Pixel 7a is Google’s latest budget flagship phone, expected to launch in India on May 11. The phone is rumoured to have a lot of features in common with the Pixel 7, such as the design, the camera, and the Tensor G2 chipset. However, the Pixel 7a will also have some differences, such as a smaller OLED screen with a 90Hz refresh rate, a 3.5mm headphone jack, and a lower price tag.

The Pixel 7a will reportedly cost SGD 749 in Singapore, which is approximately Rs 46,000 in India. This makes it one of the most affordable phones with Google’s own processor, which promises better performance and AI capabilities than previous Pixel phones.

The Pixel 7a will have a dual rear camera setup with a 64MP main sensor and a 13MP ultrawide sensor. The front camera will be a 13MP selfie shooter. The phone will also support features like Pixel Shift, Dual-LED flash, and OIS. The battery capacity will be 4385mAh, with support for 20W wired and 18W wireless charging.

Google AI features

Google is currently locked in an AI arms race with Microsoft and OpenAI, and since I/O events are about the company’s latest software innovations, it’s only natural that Google will reveal new innovative developments at it. The company has been tipped to show off a whole new large language model, upgrades to Bard, and its modernised AI-driven search engine Magi.

Android 14

The developer beta for Google’s next mobile OS iteration has already kicked off and the official rollout is slated for later in the year around October. The update is expected to focus on privacy, security, performance, and new customisation features, although it may not introduce any groundbreaking changes.
