Dolby has unveiled a new feature called ‘Atmos FlexConnect’ which aims to enhance the audio experience when watching content on TV. It combines audio from TV speakers and wireless speakers to offer immersive audio and will first be available on TCL TVs launched in 2024.

Dolby says Atmos FlexConnect works by automatically optimising the audio for any room and speaker layout, so you get the best experience no matter where you sit. The company said it uses the microphones in TV to locate the position of all wireless speakers in the room and spread sound from TV speakers to every connected device.

John Couling, Senior Vice President of Entertainment at Dolby Laboratories said, “Consumers shouldn’t have to move their furniture to experience better audio, but rather audio should adapt to them.” He added that Atmos FlexConnect will offer a new way for users to choose how they want to arrange their devices.

While Dolby already offers several audio enhancements, Atmos FlexConnect will make it possible for people to experience immersive audio in both big and small rooms irrespective of their room layout and eliminate the need to calibrate sound systems. Apart from wireless speakers, FlexConnect will also work with stereo and 5.1-channel sound.

TCL also confirmed that it will launch a dedicated line of wireless speakers that complement the recently announced feature. Dolby and TCL will be showcasing Atmos FlexConnect at the IFA 2023 trade show in Berlin on a TV powered by MediaTek’s Pentonic chipset.
