Apple WWDC 2025 Event Live Updates: WWDC 2025, Apple’s five-day annual developer conference kicked off on Monday, June 9, with a keynote from CEO Tim Cook and other company executives at Apple Park in Cupertino, California, US.

At this year’s WWDC, Apple unveiled its biggest and broadest design update to its operating system since the release of iOS 7 a decade ago. The brand-new ‘liquid glass’ design language features a “new translucent material that reflects and refracts its surroundings.” It also changes the way users access controls and navigate and extends to the Home Screen and Lock Screen as well.

How much revenue Apple shared with Indian developers last year

In a study published a few months ago, Apple said that it had facilitated around Rs 44,447 crores ($5.31 billion) to App Store developers in billings and sales last year. Notably, 94 per cent of that revenue went directly to developers and businesses of all sizes, without any commission paid to Apple. This is significant in the light of the April 30 ruling by a US court that explicitly prohibits Apple from not allowing developers to show web links to third-party payment options for in-app purchases.

In another recent report on App Store fraud analysis, Apple has said it has prevented more than $2 billion in potentially fraudulent transactions on the App Store in 2024. It shows how Apple wants to make the case that its App Store is the safer and more secure payment processing system in an attempt to discourage developers from using third-party payment processors and service providers.

Apple might share more information about the iPhone 17 Air at WWDC 2025

Almost a week ago, Apple shared a teaser with the tagline "Sleek Peek". While the tagline has intrigued many people if Apple will give us a sneak peek of what to expect from the much rumoured iPhone 17 Air.

In the last couple of months, several tipsters have suggested that Apple will be ditching the iPhone 17 Plus in favour of a much slimmer iPhone 17 Air. While nothing is official at the moment, it will be interesting to see how the slim iPhone fares against the recently launched Galaxy S25 Edge.

Where is AI powered Siri?

Last year, Apple teased a more personalised and smarter Siri, but the tech giant’s digital assistant may take a backseat at this year's WWDC. Instead, reports suggest that the tech giant may be focusing on improving its existing Apple Intelligence features and also introduce new ones like an AI optimised battery management system alongside a virtual health coach. Rumour also has it that Google Gemini may emerge as an alternative to ChatGPT for Siri with iOS 26.

Apple iPhone XR, iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max may miss out on iOS 26

With its new design language, iOS 26 may bring some of the biggest changes to the iPhone's operating system in years. And while most iPhones will be getting the upcoming softweare update, a new report by MacRumors claims that Apple might be dropping support for the iPhone XR, iPhone XS and the iPhone XS Max. However, these smartphones may still get some security patches down the line.

To give you a quick recap, the iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max were launched back in September 2018. If true, this might also mean that iOS 26 will be the last software update for the iPhone 11 series, which Apple launched a year later.

17:28 (IST) 9 Jun 2025
Apple might allow developers to use its AI models

While there is not much news about new AI features, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman says that Apple is planning to open up its large language models to developers. This means that we might see a new wave of apps powered by Apple Intelligence, but the data processed by these apps will be processed on the device itself.

16:23 (IST) 9 Jun 2025
Apple might announce iOS 26 instead of IOS 19

Aside from the new visionOS inspired user interface, Apple is also reportedly making changes to its operating system naming scheme. Starting this year, the Cupertino based tech giant is said to rename iOS 19 to iOS 26 to make its branding consistent. This might also be applicable to Apple's operating systems like watchOS, visionOS, iPadOS and macOS as well.

All eyes on new iOS user interface

Apple is bracing itself for a major redesign of its iOS interface nearly ten years after the software's 'flat design' with more colour and transparency made its debut with iOS 7 under visionary designer Jony Ive. Ive has since left the company and recently joined hands with Sam Altman-led OpenAI to build the next AI hardware product to match the success of the iPhone.

Apple legend Bill Atkinson (1951-2025)

Days ahead of WWDC 2025, Apple lost one of its veteran engineers, Bill Atkinson, who passed away on Thursday night at his home in Portola Valley, California, in the San Francisco Bay Area. The 74-year-old was the one who created the software that enabled the transformative visual approach pioneered by the company’s Lisa and Macintosh computers. Atkinson is also credited with inventing many of the key aspects of graphical computing, such as “pull-down” menus and the “double-click” gesture.

"We are deeply saddened by the passing of Bill Atkinson. He was a true visionary whose creativity, heart, and groundbreaking work on the Mac will forever inspire us. Our thoughts are with his loved ones," CEO Tim Cook wrote in a post on X.

The context around WWDC 2025

Apple is facing challenges that go beyond its perceived position in the AI race.

- Google-Apple search deal: Apple could potentially lose its annual $20 billion-dollar paycheck from Google for default placement of the latter’s search engine in the former’s Safari web browser. Last year, a US district court ruled that Google had established an illegal monopoly of the online search market through ‘exclusionary’ deals with smartphone makers and browser developers like Apple. Google could be barred from having such arrangements with Apple, if the court rules against it in the search antitrust remedies trial.

-Age verification by app stores: Texas became the second state in the US (after Utah) to adopt a law requiring Apple and Google’s app stores to verify the age of their users and obtain parental approval before minors can download apps on the app stores or make in-app purchases.

- Court ruling in Epic Games case: The April 30 ruling that prohibts Apple from restricting developers' in-app purchasing links, could potentially take a bite out of its lucrative App Store revenue as it effectively blocks the company from charging commissions on every in-app transaction. The ruling has also paved the way for the return of Epic Games’ Fortnite to the App Store.

Apple WWDC 2025: What (not) to expect

Apple is unlikely to make any major hardware-related announcement. The refreshed lineup of iPhones and other gadgets are generally announced at an event held sometime in September or October this year. At WWDC 2024, Apple also unveiled Apple Intelligence—a suite of AI features—and announced a revamped Siri powered by ChatGPT. However, the promised Siri revamp has been delayed indefinitely with the company reportedly stating that it needs more development and testing before release.

It is also unlikely that Apple will announce Google's Gemini as an alternative to OpenAI’s ChatGPT to be accessed via Siri or Writing Tools under Apple Intelligence. This might be due to the fact that a US district court is yet to rule on whether Google should be barred from having a search deal with Apple in the search antitrust remedies case.
