A week after announcing the new visionOS 2 at the Worldwide Developers Conference 2024, Apple has suspended work on its next high-end Vision headset, a report on The Information said. The report is based on an employee at a manufacturer that makes “key components” for the Vision Pro.
Apple is said to be focusing on releasing a more affordable variant of the Vision headset, with fewer features, in the latter half of 2025, the report said, hinting that this decision is due to the Vision Pro sales slowing down.
There is no information on the exact features the affordable variant of the Vision headset will have, but it is said to be “one-third lighter than the Vision Pro”.
The Apple Vision Pro, on its release, garnered positive reviews, but two aspects––the price and the weight––were major concerns that hit its sales. Many users returned their headsets within a few days of purchase.
Apple CEO Tim Cook claimed that over half of the Fortune 100 companies bought the Vision Pro, but despite this, Apple is said to have reduced the production of the Vision Pro by half.
At WWDC 2024, Apple also expanded the availability of the Vision Pro outside the USA, to markets including China, Japan, Singapore, Australia, and more. For now, there is no information on whether the headset will come to India.
