In 2022, WhatsApp introduced a new feature called ‘Communities’ that made communication easier and more organised. Now, the company is silently adding the functionality to Facebook Messenger.
While Facebook users can already talk to others on the platform in real-time using Community Chats, the new functionality offers a new dedicated space where Messenger users can text each other even if they are not connected by a Facebook Group.
Meta says up to 5,000 people can join a community on Messenger using invites. Not only can Communities be used to quickly share updates about something, it can also be used by organisations, schools or individuals to connect with friends who have similar interests.
For the most part, the feature works similarly to WhatsApp Communities, but the company says that Messenger Communities are connected to Facebook’s social graph. Another difference is that while WhatsApp requires users to have a person’s phone number if they want to add them to a community, the Messenger version of the feature lets Facebook users invite their friends and even friends of friends.
According to a Meta, all current and future members of a Community will be able to access chat content, meaning they are geared for more public conversations instead of private, which is often the case on Facebook Groups. The feature is now rolling out to everyone, but you may have to wait sometime before it is available on your account.
