From total solar eclipse to aurora lights visible all across the world, it looks like 2024 will be a busy year for skywatchers. To add to this list, another major cosmic event is right around the corner in the rarest of events. Six planets are coming together for what is being called a planet parade, a rare cosmic event that’s set to enthrall all stargazers.

When is Planet Parade happening?

Planet parade, also known as Planetary Alignment, is set to take place on June 3, where, at a specific period, six planets — Mercury, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune — revolving around the sun in an elliptical orbit will appear as they are passing in a straight line. For a short period, one will be able to see, using special equipment such as a telescope or high-power binoculars, all these planets together within the line of sight.

According to starwalk.space, Planet Parade will be broadly visible across the world on June 3, a few hours before sunrise. However, depending on the region, some might be able to witness this phenomenon a few days earlier or after June 3.

The report suggests that those who live in São Paulo will be able to witness Planet Parade earlier on May 27 at the 43-degree sky sector, while Syndey residents can see it on May 28 at the 59-degree sky sector. Similarly, New Yorkers can witness the 2024’s Planetary Alignment on June 3. There is also an app by Starwalk, which makes it easy to spot the planet parade at a given location.

If you happen to miss this one, there is also one more coming up on August 28. An even more special seven-planet alignment is scheduled for February 28, 2025, where Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune will be aligned.

Why is Planet Parade happening?

Planet Parade is a naturally occurring phenomenon, and there’s nothing more to it. What makes this one a special event is the fact that all six planets are coming together. When two or three planets come together, it’s not warranted for a rare cosmic event moniker, however, the upcoming one is special, as six planets are coming together.

Planet parade doesn’t mean the planets will align totally, but they would just appear this way. Some planets would be a little above and below others, hence, despite being far away from each other, due to their positions, they will look aligned.

What is the best place to witness Planet Parade 2024?

The best place to witness the Planet Parade 2024 will be somewhere away from the skyscrapers and a city with less light pollution, and physical obstructions. If you are planning to witness this phenomenon without any special equipment (possibly before sunrise), then there is a possibility that you might only be able to see Mars and Saturn, which are bigger than the other four, and to spot, Mercury, Jupiter, Uranus and Neptune, one needs to take the help of technology.

The best time to witness this cosmic event will be right before sunrise and one needs to keep an eye on the eastern horizon. The planets will look aligned only from a specific angle. And it’s also crucial that the sky remains clear for this to be visible.
