On Wednesday, OnePlus introduced an enhanced edition of its first foldable “Open” smartphone, the OnePlus Open Apex Edition. The Apex Edition comes with design, hardware, and software improvements and is the first OnePlus smartphone to introduce “VIP” mode, backed by an exclusive independent security chip. The phone is also CC EAL5+/EAL6+ certified, which makes the Open Apex Edition suitable for environments requiring high-security assurance along with a high degree of confidence in the security measures implemented.
The OnePlus Open Apex Edition, an upgraded version of the OnePlus Open (review), offers 1 TB of storage and 16 GB of RAM, and is priced at ₹1,49,999, making it the most expensive OnePlus smartphone. The device will be available for purchase starting August 10. ICICI Bank card users can get a flat ₹2,000 off the price. The regular version of the OnePlus Open, available in Voyage Black and Emerald Dusk, currently retails for ₹1,39,999 and offers 16 GB RAM with 512 GB storage.
The Apex Edition, like the Open, is powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC. It is available in a Crimson Shadow finish, inspired by the Hasselblad 503CW 60 Years Victor Red Edition camera, and features a vegan leather back panel. The phone continues to offer a triple camera setup at the back with Hasselblad tuning.
This is also the first OnePlus smartphone with “VIP” mode, which can be activated using the redesigned alert slider. Once enabled, the smartphone enters privacy mode, powered by an independent security chip, where all the cameras and microphones on the phone will be automatically disabled. It also physically isolates the storage to offer additional security for the data stored on the device.
Other prominent features of the OnePlus Open Apex Edition include dual ProXDR displays, 67W fast charging, and OxygenOS 14 based on Android 14, with AI features such as AI Eraser and AI Smart Cutout, which are also available on recently introduced devices like the Nord 4. OnePlus is offering three major OS upgrades and four years of security updates for the Apex Edition. This could be a great foldable for anyone who wants a premium, smart, and secure smartphone.
