On Wednesday, along with its latest Ear (Open) earbuds, Nothing also unveiled its third-iteration mobile OS — Nothing OS (3) based on Android 15 with some UI changes that also include the company’s very own gallery app.
Nothing OS 3.0 with Android 15 will be available for all the Nothing smartphones. However, recent devices like the Phone (2a) and the Phone (2a) Plus (review) will get the update first, followed by the Phone (2), and the Phone (1). The Nothing OS 3.0 open beta will be available starting this October, and the stable version will be rolled out in December.
When compared to the Nothing OS 2, with the latest OS 3, the company has made some fundamental changes, which will make your existing Nothing Phone feel a lot different.
According to Yuri Levin, software design lead at Nothing, “OS 3.0 is the OS that they always wanted to make.” The update includes a new dot animation, spread across the lock screen, quick settings, and home screen. With OS 3.0, the company has minimised the use of N-Dot fonts for a slightly cleaner look, which is still prevalent while charging, during fingerprint animation, and even inside the weather app.
Nothing OS 3.0 also introduces new widgets and a highly customisable lock screen with new shortcuts, widgets, and clock faces. Similarly, the quick settings have also received a makeover, which is more customisable, similar to the control centre on iOS 18. Nothing OS 3.0 also introduces a smart app drawer, which is again similar to the app library on iOS, which automatically categorises apps and can also analyse the usage using AI and surface the most used app on the top of the screen.
With the OS 3.0, nothing is debuting its own photo app, Nothing Gallery, which according to the company is 1.4 seconds faster in opening a photo taken from the camera when compared to the Google Photos app. The gallery app also uses AI image segmentation technology to highlight the key objects from the photos. In the coming days, the Nothing gallery app will gain automatic image categorisation, AI upscaling, super-resolution, AI image generation, and more.
