Sony recently dropped a new software update for the PlayStation 3, its nearly two decade old console. Labelled ‘PS3 system software update 4.92’, the console maker says PlayStation 3 owners will need a minimum of 200MB of free space on either the hard disk drive or on a removable storage media.
Going by the patch notes, Sony says the new update improves system performance and also renews the Blu-Ray player encryption key, which will allow the gaming console to continue playing Blu-Ray discs.
In case you are wondering, the PlayStation 3’s Blu-ray player has an encryption key that allows it to play discs and isn’t violating copyright laws. However, this key requires occasional renewal so that the gaming console can continue playing Blu-ray discs, and not doing so might stop it from playing certain games or movies.
While the key also exists on the PlayStation 4 and the PlayStation 5, it is automatically renewed on these consoles while the PlayStation 3 requires a manual system update to do so.
To install the new update on the PlayStation 3, make sure it is connected to the internet. Now, go to the console Settings, click on System Update, choose Update via Internet option and follow the instructions on the screen to get the new update.
In case your PlayStation 3 is not connected to the internet, simply plug in a USB drive to your PC and format it as FAT32. Create a new folder on the drive named PS3 and proceed to create another folder inside it called UPDATE.
Once done, download the new update from the PlayStation website and save it in the new folder with the file name ‘PS3UPDAT.PUP’. Now connect the USB drive to your console. go to System Update and select the option named Update via Storage Media.
