GPT-5 to unify AI intelligence. (Image credit: OpenAI)On Thursday, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman shared a roadmap update for the upcoming generative AI models—GPT-4.5 and GPT-5—in an X post. According to the post, GPT-4.5 will be OpenAI’s next large language model (LLM), internally known as Orion, the last non-chain-of-thought model by OpenAI. This will be followed by GPT-5.
“We want AI to ‘just work’ for you; we realize how complicated our model and product offerings have become. We hate the model picker as much as you do and want to return to magic unified intelligence,” Altman wrote in an X post.
OPENAI ROADMAP UPDATE FOR GPT-4.5 and GPT-5:
We want to do a better job of sharing our intended roadmap, and a much better job simplifying our product offerings.
We want AI to “just work” for you; we realize how complicated our model and product offerings have gotten.
We hate…

While free users of ChatGPT will get access to GPT-5, they will be limited to the “standard intelligence setting, subject to abuse thresholds.” On the other hand, Plus subscribers ($20 per month) will be able to run GPT-5 at a higher level of intelligence, while Pro subscribers ($200 per month) will have access to an even higher level of intelligence. GPT-5 will incorporate “voice, canvas, search, deep research, and more,” Altman wrote.
GPT-5, the next major release by OpenAI, will act as a system integrating many of its technologies, including o3, which will not be released as a standalone model. o3 is currently OpenAI’s most capable reasoning LLM.
Altman also stated that OpenAI will move away from using different models for different tasks and will “unify o-series models and GPT-series models by creating systems that can use all our tools, know when to think for a long time or not, and generally be useful for a very wide range of tasks.”
While Altman has not provided details on when to expect these models, based on the roadmap, both GPT-4.5 and GPT-5 are likely to arrive some time this year. This major update comes just days after Elon Musk’s $97.4 billion offer to acquire OpenAI, followed by a counteroffer of $9.74 billion by Altman to acquire X.
