As brands are trying to leverage the hype around generative AI with standalone devices featuring different form factors, Nothing CEO Carl Pei, in an X post, wrote, “Smartphones will remain the main consumer AI form factor for the foreseeable future,” He also wrote, “With over 4 billion users and over 1 billion smartphones shipped every year—the numbers speak for themselves.”

According to Pei, the smartphone user experience hasn’t evolved much in over a decade. In his post, he also said, “We’ve (Nothing) been designing and prototyping AI interactions,” hinting at the company’s next flagship smartphone, the Nothing Phone (3) and its AI features.

AI will be deeply integrated within the OS (operating system) on the upcoming Nothing Phone (3) to deliver a personalised UX (user experience). This includes the reimagination of the home screen. This will not only serve as a window to launch apps but will also deliver contextual and relevant information to users. It will also include a highly personalised AI companion––a “best friend––that will be “fun, thoughtful, and will also have a good sense of humour.”

The company also shared a demo of its integrated AI chatbot. It sounded a lot like the GPT-4o, which is said to be fluid and multimodal.

This indicates that the company is likely to launch the Phone (3) in the next few months, while it will possibly gain the aforementioned generative AI capabilities via a software update in 2025.

Pei also suggested that the company’s next smartphone will integrate “hardware and AI in a way that is both useful and brings a smile to people’s faces.” He further claimed that, in the future, there will no longer be individual apps. But similar attempts in recent times, the hyped AI devices like Humane AI Pin, and Rabbit R1, have been quite a disaster due to their software and functionality limitations.

He also compared the upcoming offering from the company with Nintendo, the popular gaming console company with Microsoft and Sony, saying how Nintendo products are created for human and fun experiences. Nothing aims to be more like Nintendo “to make tech fun and personalised.”
