From job seeker to employer: AI’s growing role in recruitment

Across industries, AI is transforming the job market, benefiting both job seekers and recruiters by bridging employment gaps. Here's a look at how AI is signalling change.

Imagine an employer asking for an updated curriculum vitae (CV). You stare at the document for hours, struggling to get it right—until you wonder, “Can AI do this for me?” A quick Google search reveals AI-powered resume builders offering sleek templates and expert suggestions. You upload a rough draft, and in minutes, you have a polished CV ready to send.

A Reddit user, Knoxfield, who used the paid version of ChatGPT, noted that while the tool provides a solid base for cover letters, it requires proofreading and customisation. “Even AI can make mistakes. It is better to be careful, rather than assuming AI is reliable,” he said.

Another job seeker and Reddit user, RevolutionaryYou132, found it useful for refining wording rather than generating complete drafts. While user Meganzuk used ChatGPT to match their CV with job descriptions to create cover letters, “Tirediati” credited AI for helping them present a more polished application and secure a job.

Meanwhile, on the other end, employers and HR professionals overwhelmed with countless CVs, too, turn to AI to get the best candidates shortlisted according to parameters they set.

AI-assisted applications are gaining massive traction. According to Canva, 87 per cent of Indian job seekers used generative AI for CVs, and 95 per cent of hiring managers said AI simplifies onboarding. Job seekers on Reddit confirmed AI helps refine applications, but they emphasised the need for human oversight to ensure accuracy and authenticity.

AI in recruitment: Smarter hiring

Recruiters face an overwhelming number of applications, making manual screening impractical. AI-driven applicant tracking systems (ATS) now analyse skills, experience, and keywords in minutes, helping HR teams make better hiring decisions.

“We use AI tools in all three hiring processes: sourcing, screening, and assessment,” said Dilip Singh Sisodia, COO of HackingFlix. For sourcing job-fit candidates, his company uses LinkedIn Recruiter and HireEZ. “For screening, we use AI tools like Recruitee and Manatal that rank candidates based on skills. For assessment, we use AI-powered platforms like TestGorilla to evaluate candidates and ChatGPT to analyse interview transcriptions,” Sisodia told indianexpress.com

Despite automation, human oversight remains crucial. Recruiters manually review shortlisted candidates to ensure fairness and compliance, minimising bias and automated rejections. “AI helps us move faster, but final decisions involve human judgement,” said Sisodia.

According to Akshay Parsutkar, a recruiter working in the US recruiting industry for the past few years, almost all job portals and ATS now rely on AI to screen candidates, with little to no human involvement in the initial shortlisting process. “Staffing and recruiting firms are actively building their own databases, pulling resumes from job portals, and storing them for future use. The way I see it, the future of recruitment is all about data,” Parsutkar said.

AI bridging talent gap

With 1.1 billion professionals—148 million among them from India—and 69 million companies on the platform, LinkedIn has a unique insight into how AI is reshaping the world of work at an unprecedented pace. “In 2025, employers are searching for talent with the right skills, and job seekers are looking for opportunities that align with their expertise. Yet, finding the right person for the right role can often feel like searching for a needle in a haystack,” a LinkedIn spokesperson told indianexpress.com.

LinkedIn data revealed that 70 per cent of Indian HR professionals struggle to find qualified talent. To solve this, LinkedIn is offering an AI-powered job match feature. “It helps professionals align their skills with open roles and focus on opportunities where they are more likely to succeed,” the spokesperson said, adding, “Beyond job searching and networking, LinkedIn’s AI-powered Learning Coach helps professionals upskill with personalised course recommendations, blending technical and human skills—key to staying competitive in an AI-driven world.”

Sashi Kumar, head of sales at Indeed India, said that according to a survey they conducted, 80 per cent of companies prioritised hands-on capabilities over formal qualifications, signalling a shift towards skills-based hiring, especially in AI, cybersecurity, and tech fields. “Every three seconds, someone lands a job on Indeed. At the heart of this is AI-driven matching technology, designed to connect job seekers with opportunities that align with their skills, experience, and aspirations. Instead of going through endless listings, candidates see roles tailored to them, making the search faster and more relevant.”

AI is streamlining recruitment, reducing bias, and making job searches more effective. “Finding the right talent is a challenge for 76 per cent of employers. AI-powered Smart Sourcing on Indeed helps recruiters identify top talent, saving them 8+ hours per week,” he said.

AI and the job market:

AI is reshaping recruitment by automating repetitive hiring tasks, reducing candidate friction, and making hiring more transparent. With responsible AI frameworks in place, platforms like LinkedIn and Indeed ensure fairness and security in job searches.

“The potential for change is significant, making hiring faster, fairer, and more accessible for everyone,” Kumar said.

Addressing the job scams, the LinkedIn spokesperson said, “We use technology and teams of experts to find and eliminate scams on the platform.”

As AI evolves, job seekers and employers alike stand to benefit, creating a more efficient and skill-driven job market.
