If 2023 was about AI chatbots that answered your questions on anything and everything, 2024 seems to be about disrupting video production as AI is at the forefront of video creation, with numerous text-to-video models making a splash.

While there have been players in the market, it was the introduction of OpenAI’s Sora that sent the internet into a tizzy. The new model, capable of creating one-minute videos from prompts in natural language, showed stunning visuals in high definition.

The sample videos released by OpenAI yet again brought back the question – will AI take over Hollywood? AI is here to stay, however, we cannot yet proclaim that it would take over an entire film fraternity.

In this article, we will see some astounding videos created using videos.

The ultimate fantasy

This four-minute-long video is clearly the best AI video in recent times. ‘Chaos Oblivion – Warhammer’ is created by Gregory Mandarano, an AI artist and filmmaker. Any avid Hollywood buff would be able to spot traces of Peter Jackson’s ‘Lord of the rings’ trilogy, ‘Star Wars original trilogy’, Guillermo Del Toro’s ‘Pacific Rim’, and Zack Snyder’s ‘300’ in the short film. Mandarano has created an amalgamation of different worlds, a testament to the fact that AI tools could fuel creativity. The short film has been made using Midjourney, Runway AI, Magnific.AI, Eleven Labs, etc

A full-blown trailer made using AI

In this trailer of ‘World on Fire’ created by Nicholas Neubert, one can see Hollywood star Jared Leto. Neubert who is a storyteller who creates visuals using AI has collaborated with Jared and Shannon Leto for the season’s world tour 2024 of their band Thirty Seconds to Mars. The short clip made using models from Runway AI shows an incredible visual palette that evokes a sense of a sci-fi thriller set in the dark dystopian future.

Vegvisir

Abstract painter and Digital artist Maria Faltis created an AI short film using text-to-video models. ‘Vegvisir’ is Faltis’s first AI creation, which she completed in three months while shuffling between her full-time job as an early educator. Faltis created the one-minute video using Runway AI and Midjourney AI to visualise the worlds that she wanted to create.

This is the Plan is a short film created by digital artist Christopher Fryant. The nearly three-minute-long video is a parody of the Hollywood heist comedy ‘Ocean’s 11’. Fryant has created the video using Midjourney, RunwayML AI, Blender 3D, and a new lip sync feature from Pika Labs.

A dark freakshow

Dustin Hollywood, a photographer and AI artist has created a film ‘Freakshow’ using Runway AI, Midjourney, and his imagination. The film, according to the artist, is inspired by his nightlife and music photography days in his 20s. The short film gives us a glimpse into the dark underbelly of a sinister world that is both tantalising and scarring in equal measure. Those who enjoy the filmography of Tim Burton could be stunned by the visual elements used in the video.

An AI horror film

‘Another’ helmed by Dave Clark is a horror film created using stable diffusion, Midjourney. Clark claims that this is the first film to combine live-action VFX and Generative AI. This film is a fine specimen demonstrating the boundless potential of AI in VFX. The first of its kind is on YouTube and has been winning praise for the filmmaker’s vision and ingenuity.

Fantasy with AI

This short clip created using Midjourney, Stable Video Diffusion, and PIKA is otherworldly. Known as ‘Final Fantasy 6,’ it is a visual treat for the ardent fans of anime and manga. It captures the dreamy landscapes as envisioned in comics and pop culture with ease, giving them a true-to-life texture.

All the videos listed here show significant advancement in AI video processing models. However, a closer examination will reveal that they have visible visual deformities. Since the Runway, Midjourney, and other Generative AI models are in their formative stages, these errors in motion or visual inconsistencies will likely be weeded out in the future. The fact that Hollywood bigwigs are turning to AI and several independent filmmakers and visual artists experimenting with AI is enough to signal the change the technology will bring to the industry.

These videos show the extraordinary capabilities of various AI-backed tools when it comes to creating visuals. However, this does not in any way mean that they will entirely take over the craft of filmmaking. Human creativity will be integral to filmmaking, and AI would at best be a great assistant that can accelerate the imagination and executive ideas.
