Lionel Messi could not renew his contract with Barcelona due to financial constraints imposed by La Liga in 2021.

This led to a stand-off between the club and the player, with Messi eventually leaving Barcelona and signing for Paris Saint-Germain.

Messi was disappointed by the decision, but he understood the situation.

However, Messi’s former Argentina teammate Sergio Aguero has revealed how the Argentina captain was hopeful that the stalemate would end and he could continue playing for Barcelona.

Aguero spoke about how during the Copa America 2021, Messi had even kept a jersey in his room.

Aguero, who joined Barcelona later that year, told in an interview on Twitch: “During the Copa America, Messi had the Barca jersey in his room. Every three day he (Messi) would tell me, I think they renewed my contract.”

“You are going to have to take a photo of me with the jersey for the official announcement. And every time we were prepared they told him not yet,” he added.

The stand-off between Messi and Barcelona was a sad end to a long and prosperous relationship.
