(AP)If it was Shubman Gill in Dharamshala who riled up England legend James Anderson by asking “When is he planning to retire,” it was Yashasvi Jaiswal who sledged Australian speedster Mitchell Starc on Day 2 of the Perth Test for “bowling slow.”
In the 19th over of the match, Jaiswal swiped across the line and hit Starc for a boundary.
Former Australian cricketer Kerry O’Keeffe lauded Jaiswal’s wrist work.
“The cheat sheets would have said don’t get too straight to this young bloke or you will go the distance,” O’Keeffe said on commentary. “This is a terrific cricket shot. Starc got a little too straight, and he is one of the best whippers in world cricket. Fantastic cricket from Jaiswal.”
Former England captain Michael Vaughan predicted that the shot would fire Starc up.
“He is just working with the angle, and it’s a beautiful pick-up,” Vaughan said. “It’s a big boundary out there, one bounce four. This could turn into a bit of chin music. I’ve seen Mitchell Starc bowl some explosive spells bowling the short stuff. But they need to change something up.”
Next ball, Starc cranked up at 141 kph and beat Jaiswal for pace as he attempted a drive. Jaiswal followed it with a textbook backfoot defense, and then exchanged words.
“It’s coming too slow,” Jaiswal told Starc.
Starc walked back to his bowling mark with a wry smile on his face and cranked up 145 kph to finish his over. Jaiswal left the ball alone, and the duo shared a smile.
In the first session, Mitchell Starc was involved in a banter with his Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) teammate.
“I bowl a lot faster than you. And I’ve got a long memory,” Starc told Rana after he swayed away from a bouncer.
