Suryakumar Yadav has resigned as captain of Mumbai after the team’s loss to Tamil Nadu in the Ranji Trophy game in Chennai. His resignation has been accepted by the selection committee of the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA).

It was after 1951 that Mumbai had lost to Tamil Nadu by an innings and the young side has continued to have a poor Ranji Trophy season. The MCA has decided to appoint wicketkeeper Aditya Tare as captain for the next two games. Mumbai are scheduled to take on Baroda from January 29 with qualification for the knockout stage looking very difficult.

Surya, as captain, had a decent season with the bat so far. He had scored 485 runs with an average of 53.88 which had two centuries in it. However, Mumbai have failed to gel as a unit and have garnered just 11 points in six games and are placed sixth in Group A.

All was not well within the Mumbai dressing room for a while now and it is learnt that MCA vice-president Ravi Savant had even warned Surya and medium-pacer Shardul Thakur after their on-field spat during a Ranji match.
