Virat’s one over spells baffle bowling coach Arun

It’s been a mixed bag and we have to be lot more disciplined than what we are.

On how the Indian fast bowlers have done so far in the series.

It’s been a mixed bag and we have to be lot more disciplined than what we are. But there have been occasions where we have shown discipline. I think the consistency is going to be the key.

On whether playing five bowlers was a better idea for this SCG pitch.

You got to look at the overall balance of the team before you decide on the combinations. Lot of thought was given before we decided on the side.

On pacers’ lack of consistency.

There’s a lot of work which needs to be done on that. Obviously we are working on that for them to be more consistent and disciplined. Every kind of wicket that you bowl on is different. You got to adjust to the wicket. We are a young side, we are in the process of rebuilding and learning. We have performed very well so far, we have been competitive. If you notice the first two matches could have gone either way and there are a lot of lessons to be learnt. The fact is that we are not as consistent as we need to be. That’s a fact and that’s something we really need to look hard and work upon. That’s exactly what we have been doing. I think this is going to be great learning experience for us to move forward.

On dropping Pujara.

Pujara has been exceptional for us earlier but all the decisions and the composition of the team is decided by the team management. People who are benched are spoken to, and they would be given sufficient opportunities to come back too. We are in the process of rebuilding and we have to try out a lot of people and see how far it goes and then we got to work out on the combination.

On Ishant Sharma not playing.

He is having a left knee pain and rested for the match.

On the processes required to help fast bowlers get more consistent and whether fitness, physical and mental, has anything to do with it.

It’s very difficult for me to elaborate on the kind of process that we set to work on these guys. Yes, it’s an issue and yes we need to be more consistent, we are aware of that. Obviously the fittest team is playing here so it’s not a question of fitness. I don’t think it is fatigue either. Yes, it’s a big mental thing to be successful in international cricket and that comes with experience.

On Virat’s strategy to give his bowlers one-over spells after tea.

Well I guess he was trying out different bowlers. There were three bowlers used successively and given one over each. I really have to discuss with the captain and find out what the strategy was then.

On Ishant being the best bowler and yet failing to take that many wickets.

If you look at the trend in this series, it’s been hard work to fetch wickets. It’s the case for bowlers from both sides. One who is willing to work hard within terms of line and consistency has been successful. Ishant has had a fair amount of success and by far he was the most consistent Indian bowler in this tour so far.

On what is the future of this Indian pace attack.

You can only work, you can never guarantee success.
