Vijay Hazare Trophy: Cheteshwar Pujara ton in vain as Mumbai down Saurashtra

Cheteshwar Pujara reminded the selectors of his hitting prowess in limited overs format but his brilliant century couldn’t stop Mumbai from clinching a two-wicket thriller in the West Zone leg of the Vijay Hazare trophy one day competition in Ahmedabad on Saturday.

Put into bat, Pujara smashed his way to 138 off 129 balls with 14 boundaries and two sixes as Saurashtra scored a healthy 279 for five in 50 overs.

In reply, 36-year-old Wasim Jaffer smashed 83 off 67 balls with six boundaries and three sixes while Shreyash Iyer scored 59 off 67 balls as Mumbai reached the target with two balls to spare.

Iyer-Jaffer pair added 111 runs after Mumbai were reduced to 78 for three in 17.3 overs.

In the lower-order wicketkeeper-batsman Sufiyan Sheikh (31) also made useful contribution adding 43 runs for the sixth wicket with T20 specialist Suryakumar Yadav (26).

It was Wilkin Mota (10), who hit two boundaries in the final over bowled by former UP pacer Sudeep Tyagi to end the match with a florish.

Rawat leads Railways to easy win over Vidarbha

Mahesh Rawat missed out on his hundred by just four runs but he led Railways to a comfortable four-wicket win over Vidrabha in their Central Zone match of the Vijay Hazare Trophy at VCA stadium, in Nagpur on Saturday.

Gujarat get past Baroda in high-scoring affair

Smit Patel, Priyank Kirit Panchal and Rujul Bhatt struck fifties to steer Gujarat to a five-wicket win over Baroda in a high-scoring West Zone match of the Vijay Hazare one-day tournament. Patel (54), Panchal (81) and Bhatt (89 not out) helped Gujarat get past Baroda’s 313 for seven with just three balls to spare.

Brief scores: Baroda 313 for seven (Saurabh Wakaskar 61, Yusuf Pathan 75 and Hardik Pandya 69; Jesal Karia 3/45) lost to Gujarat by five wickets (Smit Patel 54, Priyank Kirit Panchal 81, Rujul Bhatt 89 not out; Pathan 2/50).

Karnataka crush Goa by 7 wickets

Manish Pandey and Karun Nair struck unbeaten half centuries as Karnataka cantered to an easy seven-wicket victory over Goa in a South Zone leg.
