RR vs GT Highlights IPL 2024: Shubman Gill sizzles, Rashid Khan wins it for Gujarat off last ball; Rajasthan lose for the first time this season

Avesh Khan to close the game for Rajasthan. Rashid Khan on strike. First ball, low full toss, flicked down deep square leg for four. What a start for Gujarat!

The next one is pitched full and outside off, Rashid helps it down wide long and runs a couple. Another one pitched outside off, this one a perfectly executed wide yorker, catches a faint outside edge off Rashid's bat and runs down short third for four. Five needed off three. Shane Watson reckons there's a helicopter shot six coming off Rashid Khan's bat. Not quite so. A single is all Gujarat can muster.

Four needed off the last two balls with Tewatia on strike. It's a short ball and Tewatia has managed to get it over mid off. Buttler gives it a chase, saves a boundary and follows it up with a perfect throw. Looking for a third run, Tewatia is run out. There's a DRS check for a short run as well. This could be huge. The run's legal. So it's down to two off the last ball. One for a super over. Rashid on strike. He cuts it down point for four and Gujarat win by three wickets. Does a little 'I'm here' celebration for his teammates in the dugout. Rajasthan's winning streak comes to an end.

Kuldeep Sen is entrusted with the penultimate over. He's been the pick of RR's bowlers, in his first game of the season. Starts off with a yorker right on the money before conceding a wide followed by Rahul Tewatia using brute force to beat Jos Buttler's chase down extra cover for four. It gets worse for the 27-year-old. Rashid Khan goes over the infield on the off side for another boundary, and it's a no ball. Another wide follows. 15 runs come off four deliveries. Tewatia closes the over with another boundary. It falls to 15 needed off the final over.

Avesh Khan to bowl the 17th. He managed to concede only four when 17 were needed in the final over at this very venue, emerging as another death bowling option RR had other than Sandeep Sharma. There's no Sandeep Sharma in the mix tonight but Avesh has got them a wicket, a crucial one given the stage where this game's at. Angled into Shahrukh Khan, a low full toss that's thumps into the right-hander's back leg. That one would've crashed into the middle. 

Rashid Khan is the new man in. He smashes one over Avesh's head down the ground but Jos Buttler makes a superb save by the fence. 162/6 after 18 overs. 35 needed off the last two overs.

Ashwin to bowl his fourth of the night. Shahrukh Khan is the new man in for Gujarat - Impact Player on for Mohit Sharma - accompanying Rahul Tewatia. Ashwin bowls one into the former Punjab Kings batter's slot and he wallops it over long on for six. Next up, a delivery straying too far down the leg side, paddled down fine leg for four. Tewatia closes the over by advancing down the track and thumping one over extra cover for four. 17 from the over. Gujarat are 155/5 after 16 overs.

Yuzvendra Chahal into his last over. Shubman Gill in his fishing-for-boundaries-finisher zone. First up, a fullish delivery outside off and Gill dances down the track before dispatching it between long off and extra cover for four. Next up, a shorter one with plenty of width on offer again, muscled past point for four. Keshav Maharaj has a chat with Chahal ahead of the third one. What was that all about? Maybe keeping it wide of the GT skipper's reach as IPL's most successful wicket-taker does and he gets good reward for it. Gill advances too far down the track, but misses to get the bat onto the ball. It's a wide. But it's one that sees him stumped. Big wicket for Rajasthan, Gujarat go five down.

Ravichandran Ashwin into his third over. Goes for another carrom ball but it doesn't come off and strays too far down the leg, Gill meets it with a sweep shot for four. Later in the over, a length ball outside off and the GT skipper crunches it past extra cover for four. 13 runs from the over. The helmet's come off and he looks a different batter now. 124/4 after 14 overs.

Shubman Gill gets to his fifty. With wickets tumbling at one end, the skipper has looked at his calm best, knocking around for singles with pristine boundaries in between. But it's from here that GT need Gill to get into his 100 scoring zone. 

Vijay Shankar meanwhile, goes for a reverse sweep and gets four runs for it. But a sweep attempt has him done as Chahal rattles one into his stumps. Gujarat four down for 111.

Kuldeep Sen into his third over. What an impact he's had to this game!

Vijay Shankar chops a fuller one over mid off for four but the asking rate keeps going higher. 11 runs come from the over. 102/3 after 13 overs. 95 needed off 42 balls.

Keshav Maharaj into his second over. That last over has given Rajasthan further control of the game. Just the nine runs come from the over. The required rate is still a handful. 91/3 after 12 overs.

Only a delivery ago, or an attempted delivery ago, Rajasthan had appealed for a caught behind for Matthew Wade. The Aussie southpaw had survived that, left the ground and returned after what was one of the shortest stoppage of play owing to rain in IPL history. Only for Kuldeep to go length and drag it onto his stumps. A second for the 27-year-old.

And he has a third! Abhinav Manohar stays for all of two deliveries. The off stump is pegged back and it's a dream delivery for a seamer. 145 clicks, the Indian quicks just keep on coming this season. Vijay Shankar gets a boundary to close the over but it certainly belongs to the hosts. 83/3 after 11 overs.

What a comical combination of events off the atempted first delivery of the 11th over. Kuldeep Sen to Matthew Wade. It's gone too far down the off on it's way to Sanju Samson's gloves. He thinks it's caught an edge. Matthew Wade signals for a review. But the umpire has deemed it wide and so it's Samson who takes the review. Not out. Wide. But just as we're done with the call, the covers are being rushed back on. Rain has halted the play once again.

The run rate has certainly fell under the radar in the first half of the chase for Gujarat. Even in the powerplay, when all 10 wickets intact, Gujarat hadn't looked overpowering against the Rajasthan bowlers. Shubman Gill though, continues to look confident with his strokes. Chahal into his second over, dishes a quicker one full around the off stump and the GT captain whips his wrists to place it between long on and deep mid wicket for four. 76/1 at the halfway stage. 121 needed off the final 10 overs.

Kuldeep Sen - into his first over - to Sai Sudharsan, over the wicket. The southpaw makes room outside off to lap it down fine leg but misses the length altogether and is caught flush on the pads. The on-field umpire is forced to go upstairs by RR and it's as straightforward a decision as they come, impact right between the middle and leg stump. Rajasthan get their first wicket! 67/1 after nine overs.

Tushar Bhaduri: A straight six off Avesh Khan showed Shubman Gill doesn't have to resort to brute force to force the pace in T20 cricket. It was just an extention of the arms to a delivery, admittedly in the proverbial 'slot', that wouldn't have been out of place in a Test match. The Gujarat Titans skipper is always easy on the eye, and always seems to have a bit more time to play his shots, even against decent pace. Though his opening partnership with Sai Sudharsan didn't go at break-neck speed, it laid the foundation for a tilt on the formidable Rajasthan Royals total later in the innings. Gill played a splendid unbeaten innings against Punjab Kings a few days ago, but it didn't result in the desired result. Titans were setting their stall for the long haul, aware that a disproportionate amount of burden lay on Gill's shoulders in the absence of David Miller, who could be relied upon to be ice-cool at the business end of a chase. With Hardik Pandya having gone back to Mumbai Indians, Gill has all of a sudden become the central to Titans' ambitions, both as a batsman at the top of the order and a young captain learning on the job.

Yuzvendra Chahal introduced in the fray from the other end. Sai Sudharsan takes him on for eight runs off the first two deliveries. First one is dragged a tad too short and pulled with disdain through mid wicket for four. The next one is quicker and pitched forward, cut through extra cover for four. But then, comes a chance to remove the southpaw. A leg breaker that puts Sudharsan on the backfoot before he strokes it straight to the bowler, who drops a dolly. They don't come easier than this. 63/0 after eight overs.

Ashwin continues from the other end and it's another miserly over from the off-spinner. Gill is beaten by a carrom ball that goes wrong and spears down the leg, brushing his pad for a single. Only 7 runs from the over. Fifty up for Gujarat. 51/0 after seven overs.

It'll be Avesh Khan who will bowl the last over in the powerplay. First ball, and he gets a standstill lofted shot on the rise, over the bowlers head. The head stood as still as it gets, as it had when he flashed the same shot off Kagiso Rabada a few nights back. That had travelled all the way for a six. The big one comes later in the over. A fullish delivery on the off, and Gill holds his shape to loft this one over long on for six. 44/0 after six overs.

It's Ashwin from the other end. Oh what turning riches Rajasthan have on the night. One stays low and whiskers past Gill's attempted cut on its way to Samson's gloves. A good over from the offie, just the four runs come off it.

It's taken some time, but Keshav Maharaj finally gets to bowl his first delivery in the IPL. Tossed up on the middle and leg, flicked to the fielder at square leg. It's the next one that brings runs for Shubman Gill - six of them. Advancing down the track, as Maharaj goes shorter, Gill goes inside out over the cover region. 26/0 after four overs.

Boult continues from the other end, and this time, he gets to go against Gill. There's an audible 'oooohhhh' that goes around the Sawai Mansingh Stadium as Gill goes for a flashy cut and it just falls short of Ravichandran Ashwin at backward point. 18/0 after three overs.

Avesh Khan runs in from the other end. Remember, no Nandre Burger in the playing XI today for Rajasthan, despite his impressive returns for the team at the top of the table. Sudharsan takes the initiative against Avesh. Short an dwide outside the off stump, upper cut over backward point for six - first of the innings. 15/0 after two overs.

Who else but Trent Boult with the new ball. It's Sai Sudharsan who takes guard against the left-armer, negating the angular advantage the left-armer has against Shubman Gill. Out come the first runs - a crunchy cover drive for four. The elbow stood high and the ball went between the fielder at cover and cover-point. 5/0 after first over.

Right then, Yashasvi Jaiswal's evening is done. The southpaw, who was one of the batters to watch out last season hasn't had the best of IPL 2024 so far. Replacing him as Impact Player for Rajasthan is Keshav Maharaj. Maharaj was associated with Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) unofficially before Rajasthan Royals (RR) roped him in as the replacement for their injured seamer Prasidh Krishna. 

Rashid Khan: First few games I was struggling with line and length. Have been working on hitting the right area consistently. Hard after coming back from back surgery. I wasn't feeling right in the first few games. Didn't have the satisfaction. Felt like I was 90-94 percent today. Look forward to making it 100 percent. The more you bowl into the wicket, the harder it is for batter. Will look to have the positive mindset in the chase.

Umesh to bowl the final over. He overpitches and Hetmyer blasts it over long-off for SIX! A single to follow. Full toss from Umesh and Samson pumps it down the ground for SIX! Slower-bumper and Samson parries it over point for two runs. Umesh follows up with a bouncer, too high over Samson's hanging bat and the umpire signals another wide. The Titans review again but the decision is upheld. Back-to-back wides from Umesh as RR closes in on 200! Samson whacks a slower-ball to deep mid-wicket for a single and Hetmyer only adds another run off the final over. RR gets to 196!

Another slower-bouncer that shoots past the head and yet Parag swats it handsomely for SIX over mid-wicket! In the blockhole this time and Parag digs it out through point for two runs. Mohit to Parag, OUT! Straight to long-off.  A bit of a juggling act there but Vijay Shankar manages to keep the ball in play and hold onto it at the fence. A superb knock comes to an end. Shimron Hetmyer is in at 5. Another slower ball in the slot but Hetmyer slaps it down the ground past long-on for FOUR.

Riyan Parag c Shankar b Sharma 76 (48b 3x4 5x6)

It was Over 8.5. When Sanju Samson tapped a length ball to backward point off Noor Ahmad, it seemed like the most innocuous moment of a cricket match. It was a good ball alright, but cautiously and a bit nervily dealt with by the Royals captain. But Gujarat Titans decided to spice things up a little bit. Sai Sudharsan's idea to take a shot at the stumps from backward point wasn't the worst of ideas. But, off balance, his throw was off target. Noor was unable to get to it in time. But there was still no damage to be caused as the ball went to Mohit Sharma at deep midwicket. But the pacer produced a moment to forget as he let the ball through his legs. From an eventless defensive prod, Sanju Samson earned himself five runs. Frustration all around for Gujarat. - Vinayakk Mohanarangan

The time when Riyan Parag used to be trolled mercilessly on social media now seems to be in the distant past. The batsman who comes out at No.4 for Rajasthan Royals these days is a completely transformed player, who finds the rope and stands almost at will. The situation of the game doesn't matter, the 22-year-old has been able to mould his game accordingly. He had his troubles at the start against the Afghan spin duo of Noor Ahmed and Rashid Khan, with wicketkeeper Matthew Wade dropping him twice. The Royals were getting stuck, but Parag along with skipper Sanju Samson soon broke free with a flurry of boundaries. His first six, off Noor, just cleared the deep midwicket boundary, but was in full control thereafter with the spectators often called up for fielding duty. Whenever the spinners over-pitched, the slop-sweep came out to devastating effect. Mohit Sharma had been difficult to get away with his combination of slower balls and short off-cutters, but Parag took him for six over wide long-on for his third half-century of the season. Parag 2.0 is definitely a big upgrade than the previous version, and the whole credit of the transformation goes to the player himself. - Tushar Bhaduri

Johnson overpitches and Samson parries him over short fine with a cheeky ramp for FOUR. He attempts another ramp that scoops up through the other side, landing just between the keeper and short third this time!

Parag sneaks in two runs off a slower ball from Mohit. Into the blockhole and Parag attempts the helicopter that beats Umesh at mid-wicket for FOUR. A single to follow as Parag gets a reprieve with a miscued hit through the off-side. Mohit sends in another slower-bouncer and Samson cannot bat on it. He reviews for a wide and gets the decision turned in his favour. Another slower-ball and Samson parries it behind square and reels in two runs. Mohit overpitches outside off and Samson fails to get wood on it. Mohit rolls in another pace-off delivery and the umpire signals a wide even as Samson has a gentle shuffle. GT reviews. The third umpire says the tramlines will move with Samson's motions but sticks with the decision that leaves Gill fuming. In the slot and Samson pumps it down the ground and Tewatia fumbles at long-on to hand FOUR runs - fifty up for Samson!

Rashid is back

Parag works the first ball to the deep for a single. Samson taps a length ball to long-on for one run. Five singles as the batters keep their anchors down to see off Rashid.

Johnson returns

Back of a length delivery and Samson heaves but gets an inside-edge down to fine leg for one run. Parag follows up with a similar shot that goes in front of square for a single. Samson opens up to the short ball and slashes it past third for FOUR. Back-of-a-length this time and Samson drills it through extra cover for FOUR. SIX more! Johnson sends in a bumper and Samson swats it over mid-on for a maximum. All class from the RR skipper.

Mohit lines one towards the stumps and Parag waits on the slower ball and directs it through mid-wicket for a single. Samson attempts to unsettle the bowler with a ramp but misses the ball altogether. Samson makes room and carves the ball over extra cover for FOUR. He follows up with a single. Length ball from Mohit and Parag belts it over deep mid-wicket for another SIX - third fifty of the season for Parag!

Noor slides one in towards the leg-stump and Parag smokes it with a slog-sweep through cow corner for SIX! A couple of singles to follow as the batters open up for some more expansive strokes. Another one on the full and Parag swivels to pump the ball over square-leg for SIX! 100 up for RR.

Mohit Sharma into the attack

A couple of singles to start the over. Samson and Parag might want to pick up the pace but Mohit's surely not going to give them that. A wide to follow as Mohit attempts a slower-bouncer. Width on offer this time and Samson slaps it to deep cover for one run. A string of singles to follow. Seven from the over.

Noor wafts one in and Parag steps out and scythes the ball through mid-wicket for FOUR. Parag softens up another quicker ball through mid-wicket and reels in a risky double, forcing Samson to stretch hard at the other end.

Googly from Rashid and Parag directs it through wide long-on for two runs. Fraction shorter this time outside off and Parag cuts it to deep point for a single. Samson follows suit with another run. Quicker delivery through the line and Parag makes room to carve Rashid through third for FOUR.

Noor beats Parag's bat again with a delivery that turns diagonally past the edge. Overpitched this time and Parag unleashes the slog-sweep to beat the cow corner fielder for SIX! A single to follow. Samson's beaten this time with a delivery that drifts away sharply. Samson holds his guard down and dabs Noor towards point and reels in a quick single. The fielder fires in a sharp throw at the other end and it rushes down the field for FIVE overthrows!

A couple of dots and Rashid wafts one on the full. Parag drives it to long-off for a single. Fifty up for the Royals. Quicker one through the line and Samson gets a thick outside-edge towards short third for a single. Dropped again? Rashid's slider troubles Parag once again as it rushes past the outside-edge. Wade fumbles and it seems like there was a feather on it as well. 

Noor Ahmad replaces Umesh

Full ball angling across and Parag drives it towards cover, no run. Flatter ball outside off and Parag misses out while attempting to cut. Length from Ahmad and Parag flicks it to the deep for a single. Samson follows up with a single to long-off. Shorter this time and Parag cuts the ball past cover for two runs. Beaten! Ahmad tosses it up and it beats Parag's outside edge as he leans forward to block. A single to end the over.

Rashid Khan into the attack

Full ball on leg-stump and Samson works it to long-on for a single. Drag-down from Rashid and Buttler misses out on a flick through mid-wicket. Rashid to Buttler, OUT! Straight to first slip. Rashid induces the outside-edge with a sharp leg-break and Tewatia pouches a sharp catch. Riyan Parag is in at 4. Is that an edge? Another slider from Rashid and Parag seems to have had a feather on it as it rebounds of Wade for a single.

Jos Buttler c Tewatia b Rashid Khan 8 (10b)

Short from Umesh and Jaiswal heaves it across the line for FOUR. Umesh to Jaiswal, OUT! And gone soon after. Jaiswal attempts a cheeky ramp and he mistimes it, allowing Wade to unfurl a fine leap in the air to take the catch behind the stumps. Sanju Samson is in at 3. Straight delivery attacking the stumps and Samson steers it towards mid-on. Short outside off and Samson creams the ball through point for FOUR. Umesh slides the ball in and Samson nonchalantly flicks it through mid-wicket for FOUR. A single to follow.

Yashasvi Jaiswal c †Wade b Yadav 24 (19b 5x4)

Buttler continues to tread watchfully with another single. Back of a length, Jaiswal mistimes the cut but gets away with a single. Length from Johnson and Buttler attempts a ramp scoop but escapes with a toe edge that could have very nearly shattered the stumps. Another quiet over with only five from it.

Buttler clips Umesh to mid-on and finds a single. Umesh slides one in and Jaiswal gets behind the line and blocks it neatly. A couple of dots and Jaiswal's feeling the heat. Short from Umesh and Jaiswal swivels to steer it towards short fine-leg. Width this time and Jaiswal slaps it through cover for FOUR. Loosener outside off and Jaiswal flays it through extra cover for another FOUR.

Spencer Johnson from the opposite end

Johnson lands on length and Buttler opens his account with a firm push through cover for two runs. A single to follow. Width outside off and Jaiswal leans into a cut but misses the ball. Johnson overpitches and Jaiswal drives hard but finds the cover-point fielder. Beaten again! Skiddy lengths outside off once again and Jaiswal fails to put bat on ball. Johnson cramps up Jaiswal but he still finds room to carve the ball behind point for FOUR!

Umesh Yadav with the new ball. Jaiswal is on strike with a slip in place. 

Width outside off and Jaiswal leaves the ball on its way to the keeper. A couple of dots to follow as Umesh angles the ball in. Fuller delivery and Jaiswal mistimes a drive towards cover. Back-of-a-length and Jaiswal flays the ball off the backfoot through cover for FOUR. Inside-edge and Jaiswal escapes with two runs off the last ball.

Jos Buttler: The feeling is great in the group, lots of different individuals standing up and playing well for the team throughout the four games has been the key for our success. The spinners, Ashwin and Chahal, they have been fantastic in this tournament for a long time and Boulty with the new ball. We got lot of things covered, but it counts for nothing today we need to turn up and put our best foot forward and play a good game of cricket. Have a very good relationship with Sanju (Samson) I played with him for a long time here and there's a nice level of trust there and trying to help out if I can and where I can.

Sai Sudharsan: Heartbreaking loss last game, but we learnt a lot from those situations and hopefully we get better today. The transition from all the phases (talking about converting starts into a bigger one) has to happen in the right way and I have been working on it in the nets as well, yesterday I have had a chat with Gary Kirsten and Nehra as well. The bowling unit has been doing really well and we have a very good match-up today. Shubman (Gill) is doing captaincy for the first time, he is getting to learn a lot and it will be a very good challenge for him.

The covers are being removed and we can expect a quick resumption with proceedings.

The covers are on firmly and the Toss is delayed. The rain has fizzled out and we might have a start pretty soon.

Pommie Mbangwa and Aaron Finch analyse: 'Slightly windy at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium. 62 meters on one side (against the wind), 70 meters on the other (with the wind). 79 meters down the ground. Looks like a really good wicket. There's just a hint of grass on it - green grass. Hopefully that will keep some extra pace in the wicket. We saw here last time, this was the slowest out of all the surfaces on this block of wickets in Jaipur. For me, I'll look to play straight as a batter here. As we know in Jaipur, there can be some movement with the new ball. But as it goes on, I expect it to get a little bit slower. With the overhead conditions, there shouldn't be much dew. The overhead conditions suggest there might be rain later on." 

A drizzle has taken over Jaipur and we may see a delay in the toss. The covers come on.
