RP Singh recalls how former Indian Head coach predicted four years ago Shubman Gill would lead Indian side: ‘There were the likes of Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma…’

Before the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, there were plenty of questions when Shubman Gill was made the captain of the Indian side in red-ball. Although the narratives around him have definitely changed after the series, former Indian Head Coach Rahul Dravid predicted that Gill is going to lead India someday because of his immense potential.

“Before he (Dravid) took over as the head coach, we were having a chat. When we sit, we keep talking about the game. We were talking about who’ll become the next big fast bowler, spinner and all that. After a while, I asked Rahul bhai, ‘Who do you think can become the next captain? We have a lot of captaincy candidates in our team. Who can become the permanent captain?’ There were the likes of Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Suryakumar Yadav, and Hardik Pandya. He said ‘Shubman Gill. It was like 4 years ago,” said former RP Singh before he was named in the selection panel on Sony Sports.

“I told him, ‘Rahul bhai, he is not playing all three formats’. He is like ‘leave all that, he has got immense potential’, he recalled the chat. “He said, ‘One day, he will become unstoppable. He will captain India and serve for a long time,” he said.

Gill has also been named the captain for the upcoming ODI series against Australia. “He’s (Gill) been vice-captain in one-day cricket for a while now. It’s not just the England (Test series in June-July) series. That’s always the plan. Whenever the next guy takes over, ideally he should be the vice-captain. Doesn’t always work out that way. But obviously, what he’s shown in England was really good positive signs, and we’re very hopeful. Because if you’re going to make that call, you want to try and make it reasonably early and give the other guy enough chance to try and get that confidence of leading another format,” said Agarkar.
