Mumbai vs Madhya Pradesh Highlights, SMAT 2024 Final: Shedge wins it for MUM as they claim second title

"Atharva bowled really well up front, setting up the platform for us," the captain appreciated the teams bowling performance, before he collected the trophy. As the wickets kept falling, the team still stuck to the lefty-righty combination, which was why Ankolekar came in ahead of Shedge. The partnership bewtween the two helped the team over the line. 

The leading run scorer of the tournament Ajinkya Rahane won the Player of the Series Award. The veteran felt that the entire team was brimming with confidence, and the bowling performances also really helped boost the morale of the team, as the target was chaseable at Chinnaswamy. He was all praises for Suryansh Shedge, and lauded his confidence. 

"When I made it into the team, it was clear that this (being the finisher) was going to be my role," Suryansh Shedge collected the Player of the Match award as the crowd cheered him on. He feels no pressure as he likes competition. "I am a very competitive person, it is in my nature" said the youngster as he made his way towards the team with a smile. 

Rajat Patidar was greeted by cheers from the crowd in Chinnaswamy as he came to collect his award in the post match presentation. "This was not the result we wanted. But I am happy with the way that the boys have played,"

The captain also feels that the team was 20-25 runs short of the par score, but was happy with the way the team put up a fight throughout the tournament. 

Mumbai, who were favourites to win the title this year, lift the Syed Mushtaq Ali trophy, last winning in 2022-23. They had a stacked batting line up with openers Prithvi Shaw and Ajinkya Rahane giving the team good starts on multiple occasions, and the latter leading the highest run scorer of the tournament list. Having a talent like Suryansh Shedge has also aided the team on multiple occasions. Suryakuamr's innings put them in control, and after the wickets, it was Shedge's game to watch.

MUMBAI ARE CHAMPIONS! Suryansh Shedge came in to bat with wickets falling at regular intervals, but his grit and confidence has now helped Mumbai win their second Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy title. Tripuresh Singh came in the 18th over and was greeted by a FOUR and a SIX by Suryansh Shedge, who got the equation to two runs. The winning runs were hit by Ankolekar with a SIX down the ground, but it is Shedge who makes the headlines tonight.

SURYANSH SHEDGE has arrived! Venkatesh Iyer will want to forget this over. A short ball and a length ball, both dispatched to the stands by none other than Suryansh Shedge. Rajat Patidar is not happy with what is happening in the middle. Though the bowler made a steady comeback in the over, Shedge has made it evident that right now, he is a threat.

Suryansh Shedge makes his way in and has already hit two FOURS to Kumar Kartikeya. Showing his class along with Ankolekar's SIX over long-off, all eyes will be on the two batsmen in the middle, Mumbai hoping they would be able to bring the team home for their second SMAT title. 

WICKET! MP is doing everything they can to win their first SMAT title, as Shivam Shukla gets the wicket of the set batter. Suryakumar tried to sweep the full toss thrown at him, but a misjudgement resulted in getting the top edge for an easy catch at short fine leg.

WICKET! Kumar Kartikeya strikes! Looking to continue the onslaught, Shivam Dube tried to heave the the ball that was tossed up outside off, but only sent the ball straight into the air, as rajat Patidar completed an easy catch. Just as Mumbai seemed to be on course for their second title, MP bounced back. The final now has both outcomes possible.

Shivam Dube joins his captain in the middle and both the batters don't let the wicket falter their mindset. Suryakumar hit two SIXES and Shivam Dube hit one FOUR in Rahul Batham's over, as the pair made up 18 runs in the over. 

Just as Mumbai started to shift the momentum to their side with the batters settling in the middle, leading run scorer Ajinkya Rahane fell to Venkatesh Iyer as he tried to increase the current run rate. His square cut took an aerial route, as Rahul Batham completed a fine catch at deep point.

Rahane joined Suryakumar and started the over with a pre meditated reverse sweep for FOUR, wich was followed by pulling a rather short ball to the boundary. When Suryakumar came to the crease, he did not hold back in adding to the boundary list again, with 14 runs coming off Kumar Kartikeya's over. 

As Batham continued to trouble the batsmen with his line and length, Suryakumar went down on his knees and scooped a length ball for FOUR at fine leg. He then proceeded to loft the ball over mid off for SIX, timing it perfectly. 

Suryakumar Yadav joins the attack as he guided the ball with ease towards fine leg for a FOUR. But Kumar Kartikey remained unfazed and only proceeded to give two more runs in the over, conceding just six. The run rate keeps increasing.

Mumbai's required run rate is slowly creeping up after losing to wickets in the powerplay, but Mumbai will still remain calm after knowing that the leading run scorer of the tournament, who has performed consistently this season, is still in the middle. Though no boundary came off Venkatesh Iyer's over, they got six runs off the over. MUM 56-2 in 7 overs.

After a rollercoaster of a start, with two wickets falling in the powerplay and explosive batting from Mumbai's side, Rahul Batham came into the attack in the final over of the powerplay. He stuck to the basics and bowled tight line and lenghts, as the pressure got to the batsmen. Just three runs came off the over, with rahane surviving a wicket scare on the last ball. MUM 50-2 in 6 overs.

WICKET! Tripuresh strikes once again as Shreyas Iyer looked to go over covers, but got only the bottom edge of the bat, settling the ball comfortably in Rajat Patidar's hands. Just a ball before that Shreyas Iyer stood in his place and dispatched the fuller length delivery into the stands. Suryakumar Yadav joins Rahane in the middle.

Rajat Patidar has thrown the ball to Shivam Shukla for the fouth over, and a good start to the over slowly shifted to aid Mumbai. Captain Shreyas Iyer managed to get a FOUR to fine leg, as it raced away after he caught the edge, and lofted the ball over wide mid off for another FOUR. Mumbai are now 40-1 in four overs.

Rahane made sure to get onto the attack as he cut the ball through cover point for a boundary on the first ball of the over. He then pulled the short ball rushing to the boundary over mid wicket. Mumbai struck back hard after losing their first wicket, getting 11 runs off the over.

Prithvi Shaw took the lead to score the first boundary of the innings as he threw his hands at a wide ball, as it flew over third man for a six. Looking to continue the boundary count, he tried going over covers but mistimed the ball as the ball reached the safe pair of hands of Rahul Batham at deep point. Captain Shreyas Iyer is the new man in.

Mumbai openers Prithvi Shaw and Ajinkya Rahane have made their way into the middle and started their pursuit for a second SMAT title. Avesh Khan opened the bowling for Madhya Pradesh and the opening pair scored seven runs off the over.

Rajat Patidar has shown his class yet again at a packed Chinnaswamy Stadium. He masks for a poor first-half with the bat from MP with a belligerent knock. The finish was crucial in helping MP gain some momentum. 81* off 40 with six fours and as many sixes!

The Nataraja from Rajat! He shuffles across and slams Shardul over square-leg with a touch of nonchalance and class. One-legged, cross-batted and yet oozing elegance. Rajat Patidar is holding his ground after the third-umpire stands his ground after the third-umpire has revoked a wide after Shardul wafts the ball outside the popping crease. And the umpire overturns his decision! Another ball at hand and Patidar creams it down the ground for SIX! He finishes unbeaten on 81 off 40!

There's been no spin from Mumbai after the 10th over for Patidar to devour. But no sweat, he says, as he wallops Shedge high over the mid-wicket fence for SIX! Full outside the off-stump and Patidar butchers it over extra cover for another SIX, down on one knee! High full-toss and a no-ball and Patidar immediately decides against the run. His partner Shukla is sent back and he might be short of his crease but a sensible thing to do from the MP captain. The third umpire has deemed it a fair delivery and Shukla is a run-out! Well, that's a double blow for MP there. Patidar will also strike for the final over. MP 156/8 in 19 overs

Rahul Batham, India's 2016 U-19 WC finalist, has only played in 15 T20Is since then. He has yet to make his FC debut and one wonders why, when he can tonk the ball long. He smacks a huge SIX over long-on and follows up with a wristy pull across the square for FOUR. One shot too many perhaps as he slices Dias and finds the deep cover fielder. 

Back-to-back wickets for Dias! The left-armer finds the outside edge off Tripuresh Singh first ball to the keeper. Wickets continue to tumble in this final.

Patidar is building on the energy from the crowd. A cheeky late paddle lofts Dias behind square for FOUR. Fraction short and Patidar whips it through mid-wicket for another FOUR. Fifty in 28 balls for the MP captain! MP 125/5 in 16 overs

Patidar is breaking loose here. One for the purists as he simply unchains his arms through the square to lift Shedge over deep point for SIX! MP 114/5 in 15 overs

Thwack! Rajat Patidar brings up the 100 for Madhya Pradesh with a cracking pull for SIX over square-leg. The skipper will need to bat through the rest of this innings to get his side anywhere near a fighting total. MP 104/5 in 14 overs

OUT! Massive blow for MP! Suryansh Shedge's has extracted a half-hearted slash from Venkatesh Iyer towards Rahane at backward point. Rahane is unsure if he's grabbed it cleanly, with the ball dipping on him. The third-umpire after much deliberation signals OUT and the one-sided nature of the final continues.

A sizable crowd has thronged in for the final here. A few Zimbabwe flags being waved from the stands too. Things have turned a bit cold for MP but Patidar has decided to free his arms. Slightest of room and Patidar biffs Shardul over mid-off for FOUR. Another heave but he connects it to the deep mid-wicket fielder this time. One run. Venkatesh Iyer gets in on the act as he charges to slam Shardul over long-off for SIX! A single follows. Thakur throws in width to Patidar and he flays it over point for another FOUR. MP 86/4 in 12 overs

Huge miscue from Rajat Patidar as he slogs Ankolekar. The ball lobs up just over the bowler and four convening fielders cannot make enough ground. A good throw from the outfield nearly has Venkatesh short of the crease at the striker's end. Lucky break for MP.

WICKET! Shivam Dube in and strikes. Madhya Pradesh are frittering away quickly tonight. Senapati aims to heave Dube's short ball across the line and he sends the ball straight to Suryakumar Yadav at long-on.

MP end the Powerplay at 38 for 2. This is a tepid start against a stacked Mumbai attack, who has done well above expectations with the ball since the semi-final. Madhya Pradesh are conserving their big bats Rajat Patidar and Venkatesh Iyer for the second half but will that backfire?

Things have been pretty sedate in the Powerplay for MP but Harpreet Bhatia has just rejigged things a bit with a swivel-pull for FOUR off Tanush Kotian. 

Subhranshu Senapati leans into a length ball outside off-stump and carves it over cover for SIX, first big shot of the evening. MP will need a lot more of that to trouble this Mumbai line-up. MP 22/2 in 3 overs

WICKET! Shardul strikes third ball! A couple of rash swipes and Arpit Gaud scythes the ball straight out to deep backward point. He falls for 3 off seven deliveries. Subhranshu Senapati is in at 3.

WICKET! Shardul has two in the first! Harsh Gawali chips the ball straight to cover and MP have lost bother openers in the second over.

Ankolekar opens the bowling for Mumbai. Arpit Gaud and Harsh Gawali out in the middle for Madhya Pradesh. Gaud is off the blocks with a drive down to long-off for a single. A decent start for the left-arm spinner, with only five singles coming off it. MP 5/0

In walk the Madhya Pradesh openers as Iyer's Mumbai side takes the field. A lot of experience in the Mumbai camp with as many as six internationals in the side. That will count for a lot in crunch games like these. Interesting that Mumbai have dropped one of their leading wicket-takers, Mohit Avasthi, to bring Royston Dias for the final.

Madhya Pradesh are making their first SMAT final since the 2010-11 season while Mumbai are in their second final after winning the title in 2022 under Ajinkya Rahane. Mumbai and Madhya Pradesh had, however, met in the Ranji Trophy 2021-22 final at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium. MP came up trumps then, beating Mumbai by six wickets. 

India's T20I captain Suryakuar Yadav has had a rather iffy SMAT season so far. After starting with a 70-run knock against Services in the group-stage, SKY has failed to hit double-digits in the next three games, falling for 4, 9 and 1 respectively. Will he come up clutch tonight?

Rajat Patidar's blistering methods against spin were in full flow during the semi-final. Patidar's flair to attack is well documented at this ground across previous IPL editions. His overall T20 strike rate against spin stands above 182, only bettered by Abhishek Sharma among Indians who have recorded at least 500 runs against the tweakers.
