It has been a comprehensive win by the hosts. Apart from the first six overs of the KKR innings it has been all Mumbai in this game. Venkatesh Iyer's fabulous century has gone in vain. In the run chase, Ishan Kishan and Rohit started well and later Suryakumar Yadav and Tilak Varma continued the good start. Tim David at the end provided the finishing touch required to take the two points. Mumbai now has won two games in two and KKR has now lost two games in two is this the flipping point where the season turns only time will tell.
Tushar Bhaduri: It may be too soon to conclude that Suryakumar Yadav has left his lean patch behind, but by spending some time out in the middle, he seemed to remember what putting bat to ball felt like. It helped that there was not much in the form of run-rate pressure after Ishan Kishan had given Mumbai Indians a whirlwind start. Yadav took a bit of time settling in, and was helped by Suyash Sharma who gave him a short and wide one third ball. Another similar boundary followed and then came back-to-back sixes against Lockie Ferguson – a pick-up shot over fine-leg and a flick over midwicket. That, more or less, settled the result, which gave Yadav the licence to target Andre Russell in the next over with a six and a four, with some trademark whips off his pads. His return to form will be great news for the franchise's prospects. After 17.2 over Mumbai Indians 184/5
Suryakumar Yadav trying to uppercut a bumper from Shardul Thakur hits it straight to keeper Gurbaz. However, nothing to panic for Mumbai Indians as they have almost reached the target and are set to take two points. KKR on the other hand have plenty to ponder upon especially their fast bowling. After 17 over Mumbai Indians 180/4
This has been brilliant inning by Surya. Unlike his old self he took his time initially and then took the attack onto the opposition and now he is looking back to his best again. This is excellent sign for Mumbai Indians going forward as him firing on all cylinders may take them deep into the tournament. After 16 over Mumbai Indians 171/3
David has started quickly here. He smashed any ball which was tossed up by Varun Chakravarthy. After a few close games in the IPL in the last few days seem like today the hosts are going to win this one comprehensively. This is looking like back-to-back loses for KKR. They might be revisiting the first innings and ask themselves can they have supported Venkatesh Iyer better? After 15 over Mumbai Indians 163/3
Tilak Varma departs for 30. Irrespective of the result Suyash's spell has been impressive today. He kept tossing the ball up and bowled his heart out. Mumbai batters struggled to pick his variations. He has been find of the season for KKR so far. Only if the other bowlers have supported him we might be having a closer game today. After 14 over Mumbai Indians 148/3
Both Surya and Varma have taken the innings forward from where Rohit and Kishan have left. This is a statement by Mumbai Indians. They had a poor season last year and have started a bit slowly this season. But now they seem to slowly get into the champion mode where they just keep grinding results one after the other with clinal performances. After 12.2 over Mumbai Indians 136/2
Nitish Rana after trying spin bowling for a few overs has now turned to the pace of Lockie Ferguson. He had a poor outing in the previous game. Today in conditions which help seamers he might be looking to get into some sort of rhythm. On the hand, Surya seems to be slowly getting back into form by scoring an odd boundary here and there and rotating the strike and building the innings. After 11 over Mumbai Indians 123/2
It has been a poor outing for Narine today. The Mumbai batters have pummeled him. The onslaught started in the initial overs by Ishan Kishan and now Tilak Varma seems like he too wants to get on with it rather than look to rotate strike and get himself in. This has been an excellent batting performance by Mumbai Indians today. After 10 over Mumbai Indians 102/2
Syuash Sharma has been brilliant today. Batters seem to not pick his variations. But the problem for KKR is the batters do not have to take him on as the run rate was taken care of in the initial overs by Rohit and Kishan. This is an excellent opportunity for Surya to score some runs and get back into form. After 9 over Mumbai Indians 99/2
Varun Chakravarthy picks up Ishan Kishan. The left-hander trying to keep going perishes. He tires to hoik Chakravarthy on the leg side however, the ball takes an inside edge and goes onto stumps. He seems disappointed as he walked back in but it was a splendid knock. Tilak Varma walks into the middle. After 8 over Mumbai Indians 90/2
Brilliant innings from the pocket-size dynamo. He made his intent clear right from the first ball. He just kept the pressure on the opposition no matter who the bowler was. This inning will give him a lot of confidence going forward in the tournament. Seems like Mumbai Indians are ahead in this game at this point in time. But with KKR spinners things may turn in no time. After 7 over Mumbai Indians 81/1
The KKR spinners have pulled them back in all the games so far after poor overs initially by the seamers. Once again today after the fast bowlers went for runs it is Suyash Sharma who broke the opening partnership. Can they pull this game back a bit by building a few dot balls and inducing some pressure? After 6 over Mumbai Indians 72/1
Suyash Sharma picks up Rohit Sharma and breaks the opening partnership. The Mumbai opener checks his shot however the ball goes straight to the mid-on fielder who takes a brilliant catch. Suryakumar Yadav walks into the middle. It is a good opportunity for Surya to perform as a solid foundation has been already laid. After 5 over Mumbai Indians 65/1
Nitish Rana has now turned to his spinner Sunil Narine. However, Ishan Kishan continued to attack the off-spinner. He smashed him for 22 runs in the over. This is not at all looking good for the Kolkata Knight Riders as Mumbai Indians' openers are looking ominous. Rohit still haven't started going yet if he too joins the party this may be a long evening for the bowlers. . After 4 over Mumbai Indians 57/0
Ishan Kishan is looking in good touch here. He is smashing the ball all over the park. This wicket looks like a belter. Mumbai Indians have started this chase brilliantly. The Knight Riders' new ball bowlers are struggling again here. The onus is now on the spinners to come and make a difference in this game. After 3 over Mumbai Indians 35/0
Ishan Kishan took a liking to the pace of Shardul Thakur. Thakur who has a knack for picking wickets can also go for a few runs from time to time. Seems like at this moment he is in the latter mode. His lines and lengths have not been up to the mark. He was either too full to too short which Kishan completely exploited. After 2 over Mumbai Indians 18/0
Rohit Sharma came in as an impact substitute for Mumbai Indians replacing Riley Meredith. Umesh Yadav took the new ball for Kolkata Knight Riders who started well unlike the previous game against the Sunrisers Hyderabad were he was a bit wavered with his lines and lengths. After 1 over Mumbai Indians 2/0
Tushar Bhaduri: Talk about going in reverse gear. KKR were all set for a score well in excess of 200 when they inexplicably pressed the handbrake. From 135/4 in 14 overs on a belter of a Wankhede pitch, with short boundaries and a quick outfield, they ended up with 'only' 185/6 – that's 50 runs in six overs while there were the likes of Venkatesh Iyer, Rinku Singh and Andre Russell in the middle. Iyer slowed down as he neared his hundred, but Rinku at the other end couldn't take up the run-scoring responsibility. Mumbai Indians bowlers too raised their game, making clever use of change of pace, bouncers and yorkers to keep the batsmen guessing. For a large part of the innings, Iyer was the only batsman to find the boundary, and the situation didn't change too much after he got out for 104.
Riley Meredith to bowl the last over. And he concedes just two fours in the over and ends it with a brilliant yorker. Mumbai will be happy with that as KKR end at 185/6 in 20 overs. The highlight of this innnings has been Iyer’s hundred
Mumbai Indians are 2 overs behind the allowed time to complete an innings. Now five fielders of theirs are inside the 30-yard circle.
Duan Jansen picks up his first wicket and Rinku Singh has not been able to make a massive impact on this game! Score after 19 overs, KKR: 175/6
Andre Russell gets the better of Duan Jansen and when it is in his arc, he deposits it out of the park over deep mid-wicket for six runs. Then a four! Andre Russell slaps this one away! Duan Jansen bowls this short and outside the off stump. Andre Russell cuts this towards deep backward point for four runs. Score after 18 overs, KKR: 160/5
Venkatesh Iyer finally departs after playing an amazing inning and he has single-handedly carried Kokata's efforts! Riley Meredith removes Iyer on 104. KKR now need a good finish with Russell and Rinku in the middle. KKR 159/5 (17.3)
Maiden hundred for Venkatesh Iyer in the IPL in just 49 balls. Hats off to him because of the way he is playing despite being injured. Top class 100 with some brutal hitting! Score after 17 overs, KKR: 155/4
SIX! Another big hit from Venkatesh Iyer! Riley Meredith lands this short and on middle, slower too, Venkatesh Iyer picks it up early, swivels and pulls it over the deep square leg fence for a biggie. He moves to 94 now! Score after 14 overs, KKR: 135/4
Another excellent catch! Hrithik Shokeen strikes again! He flights this one up, full and on middle, Shardul Thakur gets down on his knees and tries to slog-sweep, but fails to get under the ball and mistimes it in the air in front of deep mid-wicket where Tilak Varma runs forward and dives to take a brilliant low catch. Kolkata four down now! Score after 13 overs, KKR: 124/4
Two maximums in a row! Riley Meredith first goes full and outside off and is hit for a six! Then bowls it back of a length and into the pads. Venkatesh Iyer whips this over deep square leg for six more runs. Sensational batting. Score after 11 overs, KKR: 104/3
Piyush Chawla bowls to Venkatesh Iyer, and continues to bowl full and at the stumps, Iyer clips this towards deep mid-wicket for a single to keep strike. Score after 10 overs, KKR: 90/3
Rahmanullah Gurbaz’s tortured stay ended in unusual fashion. In his attempt to jailbreak, he swung the ball hard at a Piyush Chawla googly and ended up outside-edging to the third-man stationed inside the ropes. It was unusual in that most batsmen tend to inside-edge a googly. Even if one out-side edges it, it tends to go finer, and not squarer. It puzzled the commentators too. Graeme Swann, the former England commentator, was stinging in his assessment: “I think he picked the ball from his hands, but didn’t watch it off the pitch. Wait, I think he neither picked the ball off his hands nor played it off the pitch. Anyway, an unusual one.” Had he picked the googly off his hands or the pitch, he would have slogged or swept with the inward angle. In short, he was a victim of his blind premeditation. - Sandip G
His twin brother Marco is making his presence felt as part of Sunrisers Hyderabad, but Duan Jansen's initiation in the IPL was anything but auspicious, courtesy Venkatesh Iyer. After two decent deliveries, the KKR player stepped down the track and though he didn't get all of the ball and gained plenty of height, it went 76m to cross the long-on fence with ease. As he was bowling inside the Powerplay, a miscued lofted shot eluded the fielders, landing just beyond the 30-yard circle. The last ball of the over was crunched over wide long-off by the left-hander after taking a few steps down the ground. The over went for 16 runs, but Jansen would have been justified in thinking that he hadn't bowled too badly. - Tushar Bhaduri
Nitish Rana is gone for 5! Hrithik Shokeen picks up the wicket. But things got a bit heated up in the middle as words were exchanged between Hrithik Shokeen and Nitish Rana. KKR 73/3 in 8.1 ovs
Piyush Chawla manages to get his man this time! Another delivery floated full and just outside the off pole. Rahmanullah Gurbaz looks to make room and go for the expansive drive through the off side. He gets a thick outside edge and the ball lobs up to the right of short third man. PowerPlay Ends ! Score after 6 overs, KKR: 57/2
When your surname is Tendulkar, all eyes are on you to find out if there's anything else special about you. Arjun showed in his first over itself that he has something about him as a left-arm pacer. A full toss second ball almost landed in the hands of the mid-on running backwards, while a few sharp inswingers, one of which resulted in a loud LBW shout, and a bouncer, prompted a lot of excitement. With sister Sara in the stands, there was no shortage of encouragement and the 23-year-old didn't embarrass himself at all in his initiation in the IPL, for the team which his father had graced for a long time. With left-handed Venkatesh Iyer on strike in his second over, Arjun had a few going away from the batsman, before a four through the offside and a six over long-off dented his figures. - Tushar Bhaduri
Iyer recovers from his injury and then gets a streaky boundary as the over from Green comes to an end. 14 came from it. Score after 4 overs, KKR: 39/1
After hitting Green for a six off the previous ball, Venkatesh Iyer moved across to scoop it, but misses and gets hit on his knees where there is no protection. He is on the ground and looks in some pain.
Arjun Tendulkar runs into bowl to Venkatesh Iyer! And Venkatesh Iyer goes big now! This is full again and around off, Venkatesh Iyer dances down the track and lofts it over the wide long off fence for a biggie. Score after 3 overs, KKR: 25/1
Arjun Tendulkar, in his second over, bowl this full again and on off, swinging away, Venkatesh Iyer uses his feet and swings through the line, but fails to connect. He is getting a good rhythm here.
N Jagadeesan is gone for a duck caught by Hrithik Shokeen ! Green picks up the wicket. There were some doubts as to whether it was a clean catch but replays show fingers were underneath the ball. Score after 2 overs, KKR: 12/1
So the young Tendulkar was on the money in his first over. He bowled at speeds of 128 to 126 kmph and even had half chance of getting a wicket when Gurbaz played an aerial shot. Jagadeesan also survived a close lbw shout! Score after 1 overs, KKR: 5/0
Arjun Tendulkar, making his MI debut, made a hundred on his Ranji debut; had trained with Yograj Singh for two weeks in September 2022. A video clip did the rounds of Yograj Singh, the former fast bowler, actor and coach, trying to get his new cricket trainee to dance the bhangra. On Wednesday, Yograj, who is the father of former India star Yuvraj Singh, sent that young trainee a text from the UK where he is on a shoot. The gist: “Well batted son. One day you will be a great all-rounder. Mark my words.” That trainee was none other than 23-year-old Arjun Tendulkar, the son of Sachin Tendulkar. And Yograj’s message was for a unique milestone. Playing for Goa in Porvorim, Arjun had scored a century on his Ranji Trophy debut — just like his father all the way back in 1988. Known to have been an extremely tough taskmaster while training his own son Yuvraj to become an international cricketer, Yograj says it was in September that he received an unexpected request. "We were going to bat first anyways. The mood in the dressing room is good, need to improve our bowling. We believe we can chase 200-210. The ball might turn in the second innings I think. One player can't win you a tournament, it's a team sport. It's good for us, that everyone is scoring runs. We'll target to score around 180 on this wicket, we are playing with the same team."
Will love to bowl first, the wicket looks dry. The ball comes on to the bat nicely later. Rohit is out, he has a stomach bug. Time to put up a good show. We are going with one change, Duan Jansen comes in, rest all is same.
Mumbai Indians won the toss and elected to field. Suryakumar leads Mumbai Indians today and he wins the toss. Mumbai Indians have won the toss and opted to bowl first
"Wankhede is always a lovely place to be. This is a day game and the sun is beaming down. Last game we got an average score of about 180 at the Wankhede, so we are hoping for a high scoring game but this surface is a very interesting one. There isn't a lot of grass and some of the cracks are showing. It is still a hard surface but because the grass has been shaven so closely, this surface could grip with so many spinners on show for KKR and 1-2 for Mumbai Indians. It could also hold a bit to encourage the slower bowlers. The fast men need to work a bit harder today. In this format, we usually hope for bat to dominate ball but a little bit of help for the slower bowlers isn't too bad." - Ian Bishop
Rinku Singh will be the biggest threat with the bat for MI since the left-hander has smacked an unbeaten 48 and 58 in his last two outings batting at No 7.
Mumbai Indians will be sporting the women’s WPL jersey for their game against Kolkata Knight Riders today. 19,000 young girls will be in the stadium.
MI will bank on their young guns Tim David, Cameron Green, Tilak Varma and Ishan Kishan to fire
MI has a clear advantage in head to head. Only lost once to KKR at home. Chasing will be big advantage. On the other hand, KKR batters have an average strike rate of 212.3 during death overs (overs 17-20) in the ongoing IPL season, the highest of all teams; Mumbai Indians (189) are seventh in this category this term.
Mumbai Indians are likely to be without their ace pacer Jofra Archer, who has been sidelined by fresh elbow trouble post his appearance in the first match of the season. Jason Behrendorff and Riley Meredith will have to shoulder the responsibility in the fast-bowling department
Rohit Sharma made a match-winning 65 against Delhi Capitals. Sharma can surpass multiple records and join Virat Kohli as well as Chris Gayle in an elusive club. He is just 44 runs away from surpassing the 6,000-run mark in IPL.
Despite winning the previous game, Mumbai Indians will be under added pressure at the Wankhede Stadium, for they have not been able to harness their potential so far in IPL 2023. With two wins and as many defeats, KKR have had their share of highs and lows and are placed fourth on the points table with a good net run rate (0.711) as compared to Mumbai Indians who are ninth with two points and an NRR of -0.879.
While Mumbai Indians will have the advantage of playing at home, they face an uphill task against the firepower of Kolkata Knight Riders batters when the teams clash on Sunday in their IPL contest, with both former champions looking to put their campaigns back on track.
Mumbai Indians (MI) will take on Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the match 22 of the Indian Premier League 2023. This is the first match of super Sunday. For Kolkata, it is an away match just forty eight hours after playing at home against Sunrisers Hyderabad. Stay tuned for live updates.
