LSG vs CSK highlights, IPL 2024: Lucknow Super Giants beat Chennai Super Kings by 8 wickets

Vinayakk: Matheesha Pathirana, who had earlier in the season taken a stunning reflex catch at short-third, dropped a skier to give Quinton de Kock a reprieve. The bowler was Ravindra Jadeja. KL Rahul mishit one behind square, Mustafizur Rahman ran alongside the ball almost the whole way from short third, didn't bother putting in a dive, and escorted it to four. The bowler was Ravindra Jadeja. He wasn't pleased. But late in the piece, Rahul smashed one towards point. It gave Ravi Shastri the chance to use the 'tracer bullet' phrase on air, it was hit that hard. But this time, the fielder was Ravindra Jadeja. So, there was a moment of Jaddu jaadu. You couldn't make it out quite clearly in real time but the first replay was enough to tell you that was a special take. The ball was flying to his left, and Jadeja flung himself as he does often and put his left hand arm out for a stunner. A few replays were needed to confirm the catch but on a forgettable night on the field otherwise, Jadeja came up with a catch to remember.

Ravindra Jadeja took a brilliant catch of thin air to pick the wicket of KL Rahul. 12 needed from the final 12 balls also because of the slow overrate CSK can have only four fielders outside the ring. They are 15 minutes behind the time.

That last over from Mustafizur probably killed the game for the Super Kings. Three boundaries came off it. This is happening all too quickly. With LSG winning today the top of the table will get congested even more. What a performance this has been from them.

Pooran smacked one for six early in his innings killing any hope Chennai had of making a comeback into the game. This has been a clinical chase from the Super Giants tonight. There is plenty to ponder upon for Super Kings as well

There is a breakthrough finally. De Kock tries to slash Mustafizur and gets the outside edge to MS Dhoni. Nicholas Pooran has walked into the middle. While It feels like only one team can win from here don't go anywhere there might be a lat twist in this contest. 

Deshpande has been brought into the attack he started nailing his yorkers. Seems like Super Kings will be treating this phase as death bowling. LSG is in a good position but they need to be careful here as the run rate is still not where they want it to be.

Pathirana has been brought into the attack and he bowls an excellent over. There has been good passage of play for CSK. They are bowling a few tight overs and letting the run rate rise sharply however, they need to pick a couple of wickets here. 

Mustafizur has been brought back into the attack and he delivered a semi-decent over. The game is not done yet but Chennai Super Kings will need a couple of quick wickets to fall to set some panic among the LSG dugout. 

It's not every day that KL Rahul outscores Quinton de Kock at the top of the order. The Lucknow Super Giants skipper has had question marks put over his strike rate, but was willing to take the lead on Friday. A batsman often easy on the eye, Rahul didn't hesitate from some improvisation, sometimes making room and taking the aerial route over cover, even off deliveries short in length. On another occasion, he heaved one through the legside, then moved inside the line to find the fine-leg fence. But the most eye-catching shot was the ramp for six over third man off the extra pace generated by Matheesha Pathirana. When he cut Ravindra Jadeja twice in succession to the fence, the first brought up his half-century off 31 balls and the next one the team's 100, as the hosts took control of the chase.

Moeen Ali has been brought into attack by Chennai Super Kings and he starts well. There seems to be not much dew on the outfield as Moeen Ali was able to get some turn out of the surface. This is the passage were LSG needs to be careful and keep rotating strike. 

This has been an excellent start from LSG though both openers have struggled to time the ball to perfection they have managed to stay at the crease keep the scoreboard ticking and capitalize on anything loose. In addition to that De Kock was dropped by Pathirana in the previous over. 

Pathirana has been brought into the attack and uncharacteristic of him he delivered an expensive over. Alongside the partnership one more concerning thing has been the pace at which the bowlers are bowling their overs it has been 40 minutes for eight overs. 

Ravindra Jadeja has been brought into the attack and no boundaries came off it but the batters rotated the strike nicely to get nine of the over. The LSG batters are struggling to get the ball away here. It is going to be an interesting chase, especially in this middle overs. 

That's the end of the Powerplay Deepak Chahar bowled the final over and tried to dig the ball in short to KL Rahul which troubled him but no wickets to show for it. Though LSG will be happier of both sides depending on dew that may or may not form the game will be dictated. 

De Kock pulls one for six. He gets one finally right. He has been trying too hard to get that boundary away and lost his shape more often than not but he nails one eventually which might give him the required impetus going forward in this innings. 

Another decent over from CSK. Mustafizur has been brought into the attack and he bowled his cutters which are not gripping at this point but if there is no dew later his slower ones might start gripping more. Also, De Kock has been struggling to get the ball away.

KL Rahul muscled one through long-on boundary to bring up the first six of the innings. They need more of that in the first powerplay as with options of Mustiafizur and Pathirana leaving too many runs at the end might be extremely difficult to chase. 

Another tide over from Chennai Super Kings. A word on Tushar Deshpande who from big one of the expensive bowlers last year and turned into a reliable bowler in all phases of play for Super Kings. Once again LSG has started a touch on the slower side here. 

Deepak Chahar took the new ball for Chennai Super Kings and started well hitting the right lines and lengths. LSG need to be careful of not getting to comfortable in the Powerplay as once the ball gets older it me difficult to score off.

You know what to expect. You wonder perhaps if you are being naive expecting it to happen every time. Yet, you believe. If you have been a fan of Mahendra Singh Dhoni, you have had this feeling many times. And repeatedly in IPL 2024, he has delivered. He smashed the ball around in Vizag, as CSK fans rejoiced even after defeat. He walked out to deafening roars at Chepauk for a brief cameo against KKR for his first batting appearance at home. He stepped it up a notch at the Wankhede, smashing three sixes in the last over to push Chennai's score from decent to match-winning. And in Lucknow, he made it happen once again, smashing a 9-ball 28. The master of the last over, Dhoni went after Yash Thakur, hitting a six and two fours. That six over long on, was MSD 101. Standing deep in the crease, expecting the bowler to miss the length just by a fraction, then smashing it over the fence. It was a near replica of *that* Wankhede six, just without the twirl. And yep, the ball travelled 101m.

That is another excellent cameo from MS Dhoni. At one point in the innings, 150 looked difficult to get however, those cameos from MS and Moeen Ali might just have helped CSK score a total which might be enough on the night. Ravindra Jadeja too scored a sublime half-century. 

The over from Moshin finally comes to an end. The over took ever as they were wide and reviews from the teams. In the midst of that CSK's young keeper batter scored a boundary and six and just like that CSK posted a par total on this surface thanks to Moen Ali's injection of momentum against Bishnoi.

Moeen Ali smacked Bishnoi for three sixes in that last over however, the bowler had the last laugh as he was eventually holed out at long-on. That last over has injected the much-needed momentum for CSK in the innings and MS Dhoni has walked in. 

With a lovely shot down the ground, Ravindra Jadeja gets to his half-century. That is a top not inning from him under the circumstances. Jadeja holds the key for CSK and the final score will depend on how much he can make here. 

Vinayakk: CSK are one of the sharpest teams when it comes to adapting their tactics within a season, and even within a match. Role clarity and well-defined plans are cornerstones of their success in the IPL. On Friday in Lucknow, they had to think on their feet. Despite having to bat first, Chennai were made to use a batting Impact Sub as they struggled to find momentum. So when they lost their main man Shivam Dube cheaply, they quickly turned to local lad Sameer Rizvi. Bowling options are never usually an issue for CSK, so they decided to shore up their batting. Sameer comes with a reputation for big-hitting, having made his name in the UP league. His coaches reckon he has the ability to bat anywhere between Nos. 4 and 7 as a floater, and can adapt. But the Meerut lad lasted just five deliveries and departed with little impact. His dismissal was reminiscent of Ollie Pope's in the recent Test series, just for how far out he had come out of his crease to be completely beaten by the turn and bounce generated by Krunal Pandya. After impressing with a cameo on debut, Rizvi has had a couple of tough outings. A learning curve for the youngster.

Ravi Bishnoi has been brought into the attack and he bowls a good over. This has been an excellent passage of play for LSG. They are piling up tight overs one after the other. CSK need to try and get around 150-160 or it might be difficult for them to win this contest. 

Stoinis gets to bowl his second over and he does a good job yet again. The advantage LSG has is they no how to chase whatever CSK is going to post. They need to go all guns blazing in the Powerplay and if there is dew it would add further pressure on CSK.

CSK decided to show their hand early in the piece and used impact player Sameer Rizvi and the experiment failed yet again. The batter danced down the track against Krunal and missed the ball completely and KL Rahul behind the stumps finishes the job. 

KL Rahul turned to Marcus Stoinis and he dug one into the surface Dube tried to hit it over the park however, got the top edge and was caught. This is good from LSG every time there seems to be a partnership building they are picking a wicket. 

LSG has turned to Yash Thakur for another over and he did deliver a decent one. The platform is nicely set for CSK but can they post around 180-mark is something we have to wait and see. As each over is passing by runs are getting harder to score. 

Shivam Dube has walked into the middle for CSK. It will be interesting to see what are the tactics LSG will use from here. Will they continue with spinners or will they turn to pace? They would have loved to have someone like Mayank Yadav to be available right now won't they?

Rahane tried to hit the ball off Krunal's leg-side and got hurried by the pace of the delivery and got bowled. Though CSK are in a decent position they have been losing wickets at regular intervals today. They need a solid partnership now. 

Krunal Pandya has been brought into the attack he has been given the right end with the ball turning into the left-hander in Jadeja he gets the longer boundary to clear. A clever piece of captaincy from KL Rahul. This is a very important passage of play in the game. 

Vinayakk: After starting the tournament on an impressive note with scores (and more importantly, eye-catching knocks) of 37 and 46, Rachin Ravindra has gone off the boil. CSK must have been glad they found a near-ideal replacement for the injured Devon Conway at the top of the order to start the season but with confirmation now that he has been ruled out of the entire tournament, they must be starting to get worried about Rachin's form. His scores since the start have been 2, 12, 15, and 21 coming to Lucknow and he needed runs to get himself going again. But it wasn't to be as Mohsin Khan sent him back for a first-ball duck. From looking like arguably the signing of the auction in the early stages, Rachin's slump has been quite sharp. CSK are not a franchise known for chopping and changing but they have already had to take a call on one New Zealander, with Daryl Mitchell left out against LSG. Rachin needs to find a spark again as his purple patch in India starts to fade off.

Yash Thakur has been brought into the attack and he picks the wicket of Gaikwad who tries to drive the ball on the off-side. Good from Thakur another one down for Super Kings in the Powerplay and there is a shuffle in the batting order as Ravindra Jadeja walks in. 

The pitch is on the slower side and as the ball gets older the run-scoring might get difficult for the batting side. While they are doing a decent job both Gaikwad and Rahane need to capitalize the remaining two overs of the Powerplay. 

It was a fabulous over from Henry until the final ball when he slipped in a short one which was not high enough. Rahane on the back foot clobbered it through cow corner for a maximum. This has been a sedate start from CSK despite no help for seamers. 

Rachin Ravindra tries to drive the ball down the ground but misses it and and ball moves a touch and he gets bowled. That is another low score for Ravindra after starting the tournament well. Skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad has walked into the middle. 

Matt Henry took the new ball and there was no seam moment or swing on offer. However, the bowler stuck to his lines and lengths but Ajinkya Rahane was up to the task and played a crisp shot through off-side for a boundary. 

It is a sea of yellow as expected once again in an away game for CSK. LSG won't be out of it if they lose here but they need to win the stem of momentum going against them. As per CSK, it is more of the same keep doing the basics right and continue with the winnings ways. 

"Dimensions - 61m and 68m square, 76m straight down the ground. Red soil (pitch). Looks a little bit drier than what we have seen here in the past. There are a couple of bare spots, but I don't think that will play too much of an issue. I expect it to hold a little bit more than anything else. It looks very Wankhede-like looking at that surface. Just being inland, there won't be as much spin. The soil doesn't compact together quite as tight, being quite central in the country. I expect it to play really well. The new ball, like always, will be absolutely crucial. The ability to find wickets in the powerplay will be of paramount importance on this surface. I think it'll be a really good wicket for cricket. Expect the bowlers to pitch it up a little bit more, see if they can get any movement off this fine green grass early on. Win the toss and bowl first."

We'll bowl first. Looks like a good wicket, dew hasn;t been a big factor. Hopefully it stays good for 40 overs. We would like to know what we are chasing. There weren't any blunders we made. Last game against KKR was a big defeat. Still pretty relaxed. I know it's halfway mark. As a leadership group, if we panic it spreads. That's not what I like to be. Great support staff. We are trying to keep as relaxed as possible. The pitches have been relaid here. Each time you play, it can be different. Just one change. Joseph is out, Matt Henry comes in.

The two teams endured contrasting fortunes in their previous couple of matches. While Ruturaj Gaikwad’s team, still ‘marshalled’ by the peerless Mahendra Singh Dhoni, is coming into the game with back-to-back victories, LSG under KL Rahul have endured a mini-slump with successive defeats.

While he averages a healthy 45.14 opening over the last three seasons, Rahul’s overall strike rate of 127.93 is also the lowest among the top 15 leading run-scoring openers. Shubman Gill and Devon Conway average higher than Rahul while maintaining a 140-plus strike rate.

However, Rahul’s play pattern has worked for him while batting first. Though four openers have scored more runs in wins at a higher strike rate batting first, Rahul’s optimal methods with a 69.14 average and 143.19 strike rate has helped him total 86.7 percent of his runs (484 of 558) in 10 wins – the best among all the batters.

According to accuweather.com, the weather in Lucknow is expected to be good for the game of cricket. The temperature is expected to be around 30°C on the match day with 30% humidity, which means dew might not play a huge role on Friday.

The average first innings score in Lucknow this season has been 175, which is at least 15 sub-par compared to some of the other grounds, and this is exactly the kind of total where Dhoni, like the seasoned ‘Concert Master’ of an orchestra team, controls the ‘pitch and tune’.
