IND vs ENG, 1st Test Day 3 Highlights: KL Rahul, Shubman Gill hold fort as India post 90/2, lead by 96 runs at Stumps

Stokes to continue as Rahul is inching towards his half century. But Sai will be facing him for the time being. Beautiful four to start. BUT HES GONE!!! Same over!! Stokes has struck again!! Tries a flick and it's straight to Crawley at mid-wicket!!

Stokes will continue and the catch dropping bug has also bit England with Duckett dropping Sudharsan in the last over. There is some activity going around as the ground staff covers the pitch covers again. That was because Rahul was distracted by them with the clour clashing with the background. Stokes, meanwhile, have bowled back to back dots. Just a single from this one.

IND 70/1

So interestingly, it was just a single over for Bashir, looks Stokes changed his mind there. Meanwhile, the rain situation remains quite dicey, it is still dark and gloomy and windy. Sudharsan and Rahul are looking quite assured though. 

Sudharsan on 21 off 34, Rahul 38 off 52. 

India 65/1, lead by 71 runs

It seems Shoaib Bashir is set for a change of ends, with Stokes following Tongue in the 15th over. The drizzle was coming down pretty strong in Bashir's over but it has pretty much disappeared now. 

Rahul on 36 off 46, Sudharsan on 17 off 28. 

Sudharsan will be on strike, he has scored 16 in 25 balls, Rahul on 28 off 37. A slip and leg slip in place. Meanwhile, it has started raining in the vicinity and there is a very good chance that we could see a break in play here soon. 

India 49/1 in 12 overs

Rahul clips Carse's second ball of the 10th over through square leg and the two batters run four. Tongue had sprinted across, dived and flicked the ball to Bashir but it was a little away from the latter. Sudharsan lost his bat while running but is safely in by the time the ball comes. Rahul then meets the fourth ball with an impeccable on drive straight down for four. He then leans into the cover drive last ball for another boundary. 

Rahul on 24 off 31, Sudharsan on 16 off 19. 

India 45/1 in 10 overs, lead by 51 runs

Sudharsan plays Woakes' third ball in the ninth over which had landed on a good length outside off, it takes an edge but the batter's soft hands means the ball dies as soon as it takes the bat and ges between slip and gully for four. 

Sudharsan is on 16 off 19 at the end of that over, Rahul on 12 off 25. 

India 33/1

Second consecutive ball from Carse to take an Indian batter's edge but this time, it goes past third slip and to the boundary. Sai Sudharsan is thus off the pair first ball of the Indian second innings. He goes and punches and gloves with Rahul with a wry smile on his face. He fends off the rest of that over for no runs. 

Sudharsan on four off five, Rahul on 11 off nine. 

India 20/1 in 4 overs

Jaiswal edges it to the keeper! What a delivery that is from Carse. Around the wicket, just short of a good length and it jags away just a little bit to take Jaiswal's outside edge. Comfortable catch for Smith. 

Here comes Sai Sudharsan, who is batting on a pair. 

India 16/1 in 3.1 overs, lead by 22 runs

Just a run in that first over due to Woakes overstepping third ball. Rahul takes a single off the third ball of the second over by Brydon Carse after which Jaiswal shoulders arms to the fourth ball. Carse bangs the fifth one in short, Jaiswal pulls it away from long leg for the first boundary of the innings. 

India 6/0 in 2 overs

All right we effectively restart this Test match from scratch, this time with only one innings each. Chris Woakes steaming in for the first over with the new ball, Yashasvi Jaiswal on strike and KL Rahul at the other end. 

The British may have the Koh-i-Noor but India have Jasprit Bumrah. He had a catch dropped off him and luck generally didn't seem to be on his side today. And even then, he went and took yet another five-wicket haul. Bumrah finished with figures of 5/83 in 24.4 overs. The only Indian bowler to have bowled a comparable amount of overs today and conceded less was Ravindra Jadeja, who finished with figures of 0/68 in 23 overs.

This day is Test cricket on steroids. England have almost cancelled out India's monumental first innings total and so both sides effectively start afresh from this second innings. It has been quite an effort from the host batters, with Brook leading the effort and Woakes providing the late push. As many as five of their partnerships brought them over 50 runs, with one other between Woakes and Brook ending on 49. We might see a bit of digging in from the Indian batters though early on though with the clouds rolling and it generally being gusty and gloomy as the players walked back into the hut. 

The genius finishes it off for India and they start their second innings with a six-run lead. He angles the fourth ball of the 101st over of this innings into Tongue, pitching on that nagging good length on off stump, it straightens off the seam and bursts through the batter. The ball hits the top of off stump.

Well England are down to their last wicket and so it is not Tea yet. Bumrah finishes that over with a dot and Jadeja continues with Tongue on strike. 

Pure Bumrah magic and there is nothing Woakes could've done about that. A tight full line fizzing away and then jagging ever so slightly in. It draws Woakes forward for the drive and bursts right through the gap between bat and body to hit the stumps.

England 460/9, trail by 11 runs

Interesting scenes there. Shardul Thakur seemed set to bowl this over but Gill changes his mind last minute. He asks Bumrah to send in this one last over before Tea. Josh Tongue wouldn't be too happy about that. He thought he was going to face Thakur all along and now it's Bumrah steaming in. 

England 455/8, trail by 16 runs

And a bit of a break follows that 96th over as Woakes needs some attention. Woakes tried to cut Jadeja's last ball in that over, he misses and it also misses the off stump by centimetres. Woakes is then getting some treatment on his side, which could be of concern for England when India bat next. 

England 453/8, trail by 18 runs

Siraj goes full and hits the base of off stump. Brydon Carse had given himself a lot of room and the delivery is ultimately out of his reach. It was quite a risky delivery, had he missed his mark even slightly Siraj would've been crashed through the cover. But he lands it perfectly on the spot.

England 453/8 in 94.5 overs

This is a bruising partnership for India. Chris Woakes on 37 off 41, Brydon Carse on 19 off 19. They have been around for just six overs but they have brought that deficit down to just 23 runs. 

Woakes takes a single off the first ball and Carse another off the third. Then Woakes gives himself some room pulls Krishna all the way for six over square leg. Then he sort of ramps the fifth ball over deep third for another six! England's deficit has been brought down to 30 runs now. 

Woakes on 35 off 37, Carse on 13 off 11. 

England 441/7 in 92 overs

Just no control whatsoever there from Siraj and well, his fifth ball in the 91st over shoots off a full length out of the leaping Pant's reach and goes behind for four byes. That makes it 11 runs in that over and brings England's deficit down to 44. 

England 427/7 in 91 overs

Oh he hits it straight down the throat of Shardul Thakur at long leg and puts his hand to his head, throws it back in disgust! Prasidh Krishna with the big wicket and well, Brook's luck runs out at last. Another wicket thanks to the short ball ploy, Brook pulls but it is straight down the throat of the fielder there. A shocked silence for a millisecond and then a big round of applause around Headingley as Brook walks back. What an innings this has been from him. However, India would be happy that they have finally exposed England's tail.

England 398/6

Brook runs two off the second ball of that over by Siraj and takes India's lead below 100. Length delivery after that and Brook smashes it over long on for a six. Another two runs off the fourth ball and then the ball takes a shade off Brook's thigh pad and runs behind for four leg byes. Brook then crashes the last ball through point. 

That makes it 29 runs off Siraj's last two overs. India are losing the plot a bit here. Their lead has been cut down to 83 runs. 

Brook on 97 off 109, Woakes on one off 15. 

Oh unbelievable, it has been a charmed, charmed life for Harry Brook in this innings, the third clear catching chance that he has survived. Back of a length ball by Bumrah to finish off the 85th over, Brook sends it straight into the hands of Jaiswal at fourth slip and the latter bottles it. Bumrah walks off with his head in his hands. Incredible how he has not yet got a wicket today after that. 

Brook on 83 off 103, Woakes on one off five. 

England 370/6 in 85 overs

Siraj continues in the 84th over, his second ball is hammered back where it came from by Brook and beyond for four. Then Siraj goes short and wide, Brook accepts the gift with glee and smashes it through the cover region for another four. Brook comes down the pitch next ball but miscues the shot to Prasidh, with the ball falling well short of the fielder. Then a short of a length delivery that takes Brook's elbow, Siraj gives the batter a stare and the latter asks him to go back and bowl. Siraj mutters a few words, Brook takes a single off the next ball and the former continues to spray while walking away. 

England 367/6 in 84 overs

A maiden for Bumrah with Woakes fending him out in the first over with the new ball in the 81st. Brook then manages to tap the fifth ball of the next over by Siraj to the deep midwicket region to run two. 

He is on 70 off 92, Woakes on one off eight. 

England 352/6 in 82 overs

Well India would be very happy with the fact that they broke that partnership with the old ball but England still have a very capable batter to give Brook company in Chris Woakes. Bumrah now returns to the attack as India take the second new ball. 

England 350/6 in 80 overs, trail by 121 runs

Well Smith goes for one shot too many, one has to wonder the sensibility behind this approach but that is an excellent combination catch by Jadeja and Sudharsan. 

Prasidh's first ball was banged in short outside off, Smith pulls it imperiously, it goes over deep square leg for six. Then he goes for a similar pull shot next ball, big appeal from India for caught behind and they take the review as well when the umpire shakes his head. There was clear gap between bat and ball and India lost the review. Prasidh sticks to the short length, this time Smith's pull is not good enough. Jadeja takes it at deep square leg but his momentum takes him beyond the boundary, he throws it in the air and Sudharsan, who was hanging close by, takes the catch. That is quite something, the kind of stuff you see in T20 leagues.

They are looking to make the most of this old ball and so far, so good. 16 runs have come off the first two overs of this session with Brook looking completely in control. Prasidh to bowl the 80th over now. 

Brook is on 68 off 85, Smith on 34 off 49. 

England 343/5 in 79 overs, trail by 128 runs

All right it's time for the second session of the day! Harry Brook and Jamie Smith walk out, with the latter on strike. Prasidh Krishna has the ball in his hands, set to bowl the 78th over, his 15th. 

Right, the new ball is due in just three overs and it is a "new" old ball that India have in their hands anyway. This could be a huge session in the context of this Test, if India can get a couple of wickets early on, they are into England's tail and things can unravel pretty quickly from there. On the other hand, England will gain a lot of confidence if Smith and Brook can hold on for a little over the first hour of this session. 

Eight runs in that 77th over, Brook is on 57 off 77, Jamie Smith on 29 off 45. A tied first session. Brook has held things up for England while wickets from Siraj and Prasidh has helped India make good progress as well. If they keep going at this rate then England should draw level by Tea but the new ball is due in three overs and they are down to their last five wickets. It means that one could argue that India are marginally ahead at this point. 

Bumrah bowling the 77th over, which will surely be the last one before Lunch. The first ball clips Brook's pads nad goes behind for four leg byes. Brook extraordinarily tries to ramp the third ball and misses. Then he flicks away the overpitched fourth ball and the batters run three to make it 50 runs between them. 

And Shubman Gill brings back Jasprit Bumrah straightaway. India ask the umpires to check the ball again after the 74th over by Jadeja, it doesn't go through that ring and the fourth umpire runs out with the briefcase containing alternative cherries. 

Just six overs to go for the new ball, Jadeja is in rhythm and now England have to deal with Bumrah from the other end. This should be interesting. 

Brook on 52 off 69, Jamie Smith on 23 off 35 balls. 

England 310/5, trail by 161 

Single off Jadeja's last ball in the 72nd over does the job. Brook has got to his 12th Test fifty in 65 balls. What a valuable knock this is from the batter for his side, he has pretty much held up England's scoring rate today. 

England 305/5 in 72 overs

Jadeja's first delivery of the 72nd over is edged, tough chance for Pant to hold on to the point-blank range deflection. It goes off his gloves and he tries to catch it while going down. Fails to do so. 

England 300/5 in 71.1 overs

Brook moved to 46 off 58 with a four off the last ball of the 68th over by Jadeja. The pressure had been building on England until then. Now here comes Shardul Thakur, this could mean a lot of wickets for India or a lot of runs for England, or even both.

EDGED AND GONE! Siraj draws him with a full delivery fifth ball, moves away just that little bit to sucker Stokes in. The England batter hangs his bat out, edged and Pant. He then throws the bat in the air in frustration. A wicket against the run of play for India.

Well, England are just hurtling along here. Siraj's first ball in the 65th, Brook takes a step down the track and blasts it through covers for four. Siraj's shoulder sagging here, and India looking increasingly frustrated. They have stopped complaining about the ball at last though. 

England 275/4 in 64.1 overs

Siraj bowling the 61st over and right at the start, Bumrah showed the ball to the umpire, asking for it to be changed. The umpire shakes his head. After the fifth ball, Pant takes it to the umpire who puts it through that ring. It goes through cleanly, Pant still complaints though and when the umpire refuses to budge, he throws the ball away in disdain, drawing some boos from the crowd. 

India are desperately looking for something here, Stokes and Brook looking completely untroubled. 

At the end of the 61st over, Brook on 35 off 44 balls, Stokes on nine off 34. 

England 259/4 in 61 overs

... and it is off the last ball bowled by Siraj in the 59th over. He comes in as second change,  replacing Bumrah. Stokes and Brook take a single each off the fourth and fifth balls and then the former drives the last ball right down the ground past mid off for four. That raises England's 250 as well. 

All right then, first over of spin in the day and Jadeja comes in as first change in 58th over. He is replacing Prasidh. Brook is on strike, having scored 26 off 31 balls, Stokes on three off 23. 

England 244/4 in 57 overs, trail by 227

Wow, a sumptous cover drive on the up by Brook off Prasidh's fifth ball of the 56th over. It is a fullish length outside off, Brook makes it look effortless. What a start this has been for the England limited overs captain. 

He is on 26 off 31 balls at the end of that over, Stokes on three off 17. 

England 244/4 in 56 overs, trail by 227 runs

Pope had hit a four off the first ball that the great man bowled today. Now Brook hits another off the first ball of Bumrah's second over. On a length outside off, Brook actually jumps down the track (!!!!) and smashes it through cover for four. Not too many times have we seen a batter treat Bumrah like that in Test cricket, or any format really. He takes a single next ball and Stokes fends off the rest of the deliveries. 

Brook on 15 off 21, Stokes on two off nine. 

England 232/4 in 54 overs, trail India by 239 runs

There is the breakthrough India were looking for and it is also the centurion. Short and wide for the first ball of his second over of the day after Bumrah bowls the 51st, Pope tries a cut and ends up getting a thin edge to Pant. Not the greatest of deliveries from Prasidh but it does the job. 

It also brings out England captain Ben Stokes, who had earlier put in a lion-hearted effort with the ball.

The normal Bazballer way of getting off the mark of course. Pope gets off strike first ball and Brook pushes the second to cover, gets beaten off the third and defends down the fourth. The fifth is short and wide from Prasidh and Brook flays it through point for four. Prasidh goes back of a length sixth ball outside off, Brook pulls it with aplomb into the stands. 

Prasidh Krishna steaming in for India, his 11th over, India's 50th and the first of the day. Ollie Pope is on strike. Harry Brook at the other end, having got a life yesterday when he was caught off a no ball by Bumrah in the last over of the day. Here we go!

The Indian team is in a huddle, the loose ends of the players shirts and sweaters and pants flapping in the gust at windy Headingley. It is overcast as well, which is always magic dust for any pacer in England. Perfect chance for us to recap where we stand in this match: 

England are 209/3 in 49 overs, trail India by 262 runs, Ollie Pope is batting on 100 off 131 balls, Harry Brook yet to get off the mark after facing 12 balls. All three English wickets have fallen to the absolutely incredible Jasprit Bumrah, who has figures of 3/48 in 13 overs. 

So what did Rishabh Pant do after scoring his century? What is it that he seems to have decided to make his signature celebration, having pulled it off first to widespread applause in LSG's last game this season in the IPL? Well, somersault is what slipped out of everyone's mouths but, in gymnastics-speak, it isn't. And Pant has a bit of a history with gymnastics so he himself would correct you before anyone else, probably. Read more here!

7 – Rishabh Pant surpassed MS Dhoni with his seventh Test century, the highest among all Indian wicket-keepers

Jasprit Bumrah didn’t celebrate Ben Duckett’s wicket for too long. He was thinking ahead, England was 126/2 and India needed more wickets urgently to justify bowling under a largely overcast day, all day. Joe Root was entering the field and Bumrah had sniffed an opportunity. He signaled KL Rahul to move to slips from covers. Rahul would put some loose mud from the crease to dry his hands. He knew a catch would come his way. He wasn’t the only one who knew that Bumrah has Root’s number, he has got him 9 times. This was India’s chance to strike a vital blow and it was Bumrah, the best bowler in Tests by miles, who was expected to do the honours. Both Root and Ollie Pope survived that short Bumrah storm, but not the day. But they did give England that all-important breathing time.

148* – With his second wicket in the England innings, Jasprit Bumrah surpassed Wasim Akram (146) for most SENA wickets among Asian pacers. Bumrah’s strike rate (45.6) betters Akram’s (55.7) with both featuring in 32 matches.

39.5 – Bumrah’s strike rate in the ICC World Test Championship for 159 scalps is only bettered by Kagiso Rabada (39.1) for 160 wickets.

54 – Bumrah is the only bowler to record 50-plus bowled dismissals in Tests since the year of his debut in 2018.

10 – Bumrah dismissed Joe Root for the 10th time in 25 meetings, with the Englishman only averaging 29. It is the most Bumrah has dismissed any batter in Test cricket. Only Pat Cummins (11) has dismissed Root more times in Test cricket, with the Australian and Bumrah both accounting for Root 14 times across formats, the joint-highest.

Hello and welcome to our live coverage of Day 3 of the first ENG vs IND Test played at Headingley in Leeds. Ollie Pope's century and a 122-run stand with Ben Duckett put England in command on Day 2, trailing India by 262 with seven wickets left. England dominated the day, taking 7 Indian wickets for just 41 runs after Pant's one-handed six took India to 430/3 before being bowled out for 471.

Jasprit Bumrah shone with three wickets, but India missed three chances, including two dropped catches and a no-ball, to leave the match finely balanced.
