Performances against this West Indies side that is searching for its soul after missing out on a World Cup berth for the first time may not flatter. Yet, there were a couple of encouraging signs for Rohit Sharma from the first ODI at Barbados where India clinched a five-wicket victory in their chase of 115.
With the World Cup looming, every tiny aspect is bound to be under lens. And to start off, so was the decision to open the bowling with Hardik Pandya despite having Umran Malik and Shardul Thakur in the XI. In the bigger picture, i.e. the World Cup, it is one that is bound to generate interest as Pandya as a new-ball bowler – he is used to bowling in the IPL for Gujarat Titans – has shown a tendency to be effective in slow conditions where the odd ball stops a bit. For a seamer who prefers pitching it on the hard length or the back of the length, if Pandya manages to hits the right spots, he can be counted on to send down a few quiet overs in the first powerplay, especially if India play with only three seam bowling options in the XI. On Thursday, it brought him the wicket of Kyle Mayers.(Read more from our senior writer Venkata Krishna B)

All the drama for that last lbw appeal and it didn't play out in the game for long as Shardul Thakur cleans up Jayden Seales. India win by 200 runs and claim the ODI series 2-1.
Kuldeep Yadav claims the final straw. Another lbw shout out and the umpire raises his fingers straightaway. Jayden Seales goes upstairs. No bat involved. Two reds, Umpire's Call. India have won....except they haven't. The Indian players are confused and have surrounded the umpire. This is going to create some ruckus over the social media.
Here's what happened. The umpire had raised the finger after a catch was taken following the lbw appeal. So the original decision as far as the lbw appeal was concerned was not out. Hence, the umpire's call favors the batters.
Once again, Shardul Thakur is the one who provides India the breakthrough to break a long stand. Well, in context of this innings anyway. A short one and Alzarri Joseph goes for the pull shot. It takes an edge and Ishan Kishan claims it behind the wicket. West Indies nine down.
Alzarri Joseph joins in the boundary count. A splendid cover drive off Shardul Thakur for four. After 32 overs, the Windies are 140/8. 52 run stand for the ninth wicket between Joseph and Gudakesh Motie.
Motie goes big against Jadeja again. It was in the slot and he made room to clear it over the long off boundary for six. There's a caught behind appeal against Motie. Nothing given by the umpire. India go for a review but the ball has thudded against the pad. India lose their last review. After 31 overs, the Windies are 135/8.
Jadeja over the wicket to Motie. An expensive over this. He goes full and wide and the southpaw smacks one over long off for six. Jadeja shifts to length ball and Motie cuts him behind square on the off side for four down the third man fence. Jadeja goes flat again and Motie slaps it past point for another boundary. 14 off the over. After 29 overs, West Indies are 125/8.
Kuldeep Yadav to Gudakesh Motie. Length ball outside off and the left-hander cuts it behind for four down deep backward point fence.
Jadeja from the other end bowls a maiden. After 27 overs, Windies are 110/8.
Mukesh Kumar returns for a second spell and it's not a return to remember.
Steps over the line twice. Joseph pulls him behind square for six. The hosts delay the inevitable for another over. At the halfway stage, West Indies are 105/8.
Kuldeep to Cariah. Full and straight. Cariah gets an inside edge, and it runs down fine leg fence for four.
Next ball is length and straight and this time, Cariah misses. Plumb? Yes. The umpire raises his finger. The southpaw goes for a review. But its three reds and his luck has finally run out. Windies are eight down.
Gudakesh Motie is the new man in. A stumping appeal from Ishan Kishan but nothing comes off it. Next ball, Motie swats a Kuldeep full toss for four square in front of the wicket. 92/8 after 24 overs.
Jadeja continues from the other end. Slids one past Joseph's outside edge. No hurry to score runs here. Just the one run comes here. 82/7 after 23 overs.
Kuldeep Yadav continues and GETS A WICKET! Googly!
Just as Athanaze advanced down the track, it went right between his bat and pads and clipped the off stump. West Indies are seven down.
Meanwhile, Alzarri Joseph plants his front foot outside to slog sweep one over deep mid wicket for six. 81/7 after 22 overs.
Yannic Cariah has the fate by his side. Two lbw calls survived and now, miscommunication in the middle and the southpaw was nowhere in the frame as mid on threw that to the striker's end. If only, the throw was on target or near to the keeper.
After 20 overs, West Indies are 68/6.
Kuldeep Yadav into attack. Pitches one straight and it goes through Cariah's defence to hit his pads. He doesn't look much interested in appeal but substitute fielder Virat Kohli suggests they should go up. Nothing comes off it as the wickets are missing on the projection.
Next delivery, another lbw shout out and this time the finger goes up. But Cariah takes the review and is rewarded as the ball has pitched outside leg. 62/6 after 18 overs.
Despite the batting friendly nature of the surface, 352 was always going to be a tough ask. But this state of the play wasn't expected following the second ODI. Unadkat wraps up his fourth over. West Indies, 62/6 after 17 overs.
Jaydev Unadkat continues. The game seems out of reach for the hosts but Yannic Cariah gets a boundary to derive a few cheers. Presses forward to drive one through covers for four. After 15 overs, Windies are 55/6.
A caught behind appeal for Alick Athanaze but nothing given from the umpire and the Indian players aren't that convinced either.
Back to back boundaries for Romario Shepherd. A pull down deep square leg boundary for four. A push down mid on for four.
But Thakur has the last laugh. A short ball and Shepherd hooks it straight to Jaydev Unadkat, who takes a brilliant two-touch catch at the boundary. 50/6 after 14 overs.
Hetmyer off the mark in style. Shardul Thakur offers width outside off stump and there's a gorgeous drive that carries through to the wide long off boundary.
The southpaw's stay in the middle isn't long though. Going for another drive, he perfectly locates Suryakumar Yadav at extra cover. What a dolly! 40/5 after 12 overs.
Jaydev Unadkat strikes in his first over. Keacy Carter, fishing outside off stump, gets a leading edge and Shubman Gill at first slip takes a splending catch. The third umpire's having a check on if it was clean. It is. West Indies, four down for 35.
Shardul Thakur replaces Hardik Pandya. Strays down leg side and Keacy Carter flicks it to deep square leg boundary for four. A first boundary for the youngster. 34/3 after 10 overs.
Alick Athanaze takes the initiative. Back-to-back boundaries. A pull through backward square leg. Flicks on down leg side and it whiskers past a diving Kishan for four. 25/3 after eight overs.
Hope is gone. Mukesh Kumar the culprit. Another outswinger that induces an outside edge and Shubman Gill at first slip takes the catch. Jeez, this is looking like a humbling in making. West Indies three down for 17.
Shai Hope with a first boundary. Leans forward to meet an outside off delivery, a picture perfect cover drive for four. Five off the over. 15/2 after five.
Captain Shai Hope is in. Top scorer from the last game. Can he rescue his team following the early blows? Hardik Pandya bowls another economical set of six deliveries. 10/2 after four overs.
Chopped on!
Mukesh with another one. Two off two overs now. Kyle Mayers looking to drive it on the off side has induced an inside edge and the bails are off. West Indies are 7/2 after three overs.
Hardik Pandya from the other end. A maiden over to start the spell. Alick Athanaze is the new batter in. This has the makings of a long day at office for the West Indies, either ways. 1/1 after two overs.
Mukesh Kumar strikes in the first over!
Outswinging delivery that kept low and Brandon King has gone after it. Scrapes an outside edge and Ishan Kishan takes a low diving catch. West Indies, 1/1 after the first over.
Hardik Pandya dons a red bandana, probably paying tribute to Stuart Broad, as he offers a final set of words to his teammates in the huddle with the two West Indies openers walk into the middle. Mukesh Kumar with the new ball as Brandon King takes guard. 352 to win.
Sanju Samson: It feels really great to spend some time in the middle, score some runs and contribute for your country. I had different plans for different players, I wanted to use my feet and dominate the lengths of the bowlers. Being an Indian cricketer is a challenging thing (speaking about adjusting to playing in different batting positions), I have played domestic cricket for the last 8-9 years and for India here and there, so it gives you a bit of understanding of playing in different positions. It is the number of overs you get and it is not about batting position so you gotta prepare accordingly. That (Kensington Oval) was a bit damp, but this (surface) looks a bit dry. With the new ball it was coming on nicely, but as the ball got old it was holding up and became slightly tough against the spinners. It was not easy to get that score, credit goes to the middle order batters for hanging in and getting that score. With our bowling order I'm confident. (of defending the target.)
And he starts off the final over with a maximum. Hardik Pandya. Punishes Shepherd for pitching it full and straight outside off. The next one is slower and deceives the Indian captain by staying low. Familiar script follows as Shepherd goes short and slow, Pandya splits it between two fielders converging at the deep mid wicket boundary. Fourth is a slot ball, smacked over the bowler's head for six. Next up: full and wide, dot ball.
Final ball is hit down long on and Jayden Seales does well to save two runs. India finish at 351/5.
Alzarri Joseph hasn't been too miser himself. Pandya picks his full delivery sliding down the leg side for another maximum. This time over deep square leg. Fifty for the stand-in skipper. Off 45 deliveries.
Gets the strike for the last over with India 333/5.
Hasn't been your typical Hardik Pandya knock but he has spent enought time to send a half volley down the ground for six. Jayden Seales has had an ordinary outing with the ball. Those persistently short and wide deliveries to Kishan and Gill from the start didn't help. 13 runs from his eighth over account for 75 of India's 323. Two more overs left to play.
Romario Shepherd seems to have pulled a hamstring and looks in some discomfort. Is going to continue for now. And delivers the West Indies the crucial wicket of Suryakumar Yadav who looks to go behind the wicket but is caught by Yannic Cariah.
With three overs left to play, Ravindra Jadeja comes to the crease. 310/5, India.
Suryakumar Yadav takes off on the off side. Another low full toss served. Just opens the face of the blade, stopps low and connects it over backward point for six. His second of the day. 305/4 with four overs left to play!
50 partnership up between SKY and Pandya. It's not been a flurry of boundaries but they've started coming off the last three years. Hardik Pandya gets one off this one. Fine drive past cover and point for four. 295/4 after 45 overs.
Shepherd in for his last spell. Manages to keep the first five balls down to just the three runs before dishing a slower full toss outside the off stump. Surya gets a hold of it and foils it over extra cover for four. India, 287/4 after 44 overs.
Alzarri Joseph to Suryakumar Yadav, a low full toss down the leg side. Easiest set of runs SKY will score. A glance down the leg side wide of the Windies skipper for four.
There's a high full toss later in the over straight at Surya and he deals with it by going over fine leg for six. Not the cleanest of connections but it was enough. 280/4 after 43 overs.
Cariah goes too full and in the slot. Hardik Pandya mauls it 89m down the ground for his first six of the game. Is he going to bring the change of gears India need?
266/4 after 42 overs.
Between the 32nd and the 40th over, India have only score 26 runs and have lost two wickets. There's been a startling change of momentum following that Samson wicket.
Hardik Pandya manages to end the 41st over on a positive note. A fierce pull to deep mid wicket for four. 257/4 after 41 overs.
As reported by The Indian Express on Monday, Suryakumar Yadav walks in to bat at his new number, 6. The Mumbai batter who hasn't been able to replicate his T20 success in the ODI format has been shifted lower down the order by the Indian team management, who are looking to use him as a finisher. Read more details from Devendra Pandey here.
Meanwhile a good time for SKY to come in with just the 10 overs left in play. After 40, India are 247/4.
In his last over of the match, Gudakesh Motie removes Shubman Gill (85 off 92)!
The Indian opener goes for the pull and finds Yannic Cariah at mid wicket. He's in shock over the choice of shot there. India four down for 245 after 39 overs.
Speaking of new finds, Yannic Cariah has been immense for the West Indies in this series so far. This, his first international outing at his home ground in Trinidad. Getting rid of Ishan Kishan and putting a lid on the flow of runs now, not a bad impression in front of his home crowd. Another good over comes to end. India, 242/3 after 38 overs.
With Ian Bishop gushing over Rinku Singh on-air after his first India call-up for the Ireland series next month, not a bad time to hear what he had to say to The Indian Express' Pratyush Raj.“Everytime I talk to my parents, we end up crying.” Read here.
Shepherd into his seventh over. Takes the pace off the ball and Pandya-Gill are in no hurry to resume the assault. Just the three runs from the over. Gill can do as much damage as any other finisher in the 40-50 overs territory.
The Indian opener has, however, not been able to accelerate over the last few overs. A maiden over from Gudakesh Motie. 238/3 after 37 overs.
Hardik Pandya gets his first boundary in style. A brilliant straight drive down mid off for four. The tempo has fallen drastically following that Samson wicket. Nothing wrong with it, India have the runs and time by their side to post a daunting total. 35 overs gone, the score reads 235/3.
ODI fifty number three for Sanju Samson. What a brilliant attacking knock it has been, and it comes to an end in the same over as he locates the fielder at mid off and Romario Shepherd gets his man. After 32 overs, India are 224/3.
Samson has taken a sharp leg stump stance against Cariah. A fuller delivery on the off stump is met by advancing down the ground and a heave straight over the bowler's head for a six. Cariah shifts to slightly length delivery while catering to the same line and is swept down square leg for four more. This is superb intent from Samson!
After 31 overs, India are 221/2.
Seales starts off the over with a full delivery outside off stump which is met on the rise with a crispy drive from Gill for four. To Samson, he goes the way all West Indies quicks have in this game more so often - short and wide. Cut hard for four through backward point. 207/2 after 29 overs.
Motie to Gill. Pitched full and down the leg stumps. A flick from Gill and it runs down fine leg. Poor work from Jayden Seales, who manages to get to it but somehow is unable to collect it as it slips through for four. That's followed by a fashionable late cut for another boundary. 195/2 after 28 overs.
Jayden Seales into the attack and Samson takes him on first ball. A fuller delivery on the stumps, smoked over deep mid wicket for six. This is red hot IPL-form of Samson we haven't seen much in the Indian colors (touchwood). Can he make use of this start for a biggie? 185/2 after 27 overs.
Gudakesh Motie back into attack. Samson has to be cautious here not to commit too much on the front foot as he did off Cariah in the previous game only to be deceived by the bounce and turn, as he does here. Just the three runs off the over. 178/2 after 26 overs.
Gudakesh Motie with a fumble at the third man boundary and Alzarri Joseph is furious as India get double out of a single situation. There is an lbw appeal later in the over. Full and straight from Joseph from over the wicket. Nothing given by the umpires. Shai Hope go upstairs. Seems like straying down leg side on the cursory glance.
UltraEdge: no bat involved. Pitched in line, impact in line but the Umpire's Call on stumps saves Samson. Halfway through the innings, India are 175/2
Sanju Samson flicks the switch straightaway. Yannic Cariah offers a tossed up delivery on the stumps and the new batter in slams it over long on. Another fuller one later in the over, more on the off side, is dealt with the same treatment. This time over long off. 171/2 after 24 overs.
Alzarri Joseph back into the attack for a second spell. Goes short against Ruturaj Gaikwad, who swivels to get in position and pulls it wide of deep backward square leg for four.
A couple deliveries later, he moves to outside off and Gaikwad goes for a cover drive but gets a healthy edge to guide it straight to Brandon King in the slips. India lose a second wicket. 154/2 after 23 overs.
Cariah with another sharp one as he beats Ruturaj Gaikwad's outside edge on the fourth stump line with the turn. Gill also negotiating calmly with the wicket taker. 149/1 after 22 overs.
Ishan Kishan wasn't backing off. It had to take a spinner and Yannic Cariah does the trick in his first over. Holds his length back as Kishan pre-ampts a half volley and goes down the track but is stumped by Shai Hope. Departs for 77 off 64 deliveries.
Ruturaj Gaikwad is the new man in. After 20 overs, India are 144/1.
Kishan meanwhile, is playing his best knock of this series. Again, that back of a length delivery - a slower one - and it's pulled over deep square leg for six. Goes for glory off the next ball again. Gets an edge and it flies past Hope behind the stumps for four. 141/0 after 19 overs.
Finally, after what had seemed like a pretty long drought, it wasn't though, Shubman Gill is back among the runs. A first fifty plus score at this tour. Pulls a short one hard through backward square leg to get to the milestone. 128/0, India.
The Windies have got back some control of the game in the past couple of overs. 14 runs coming off them. This wicket has been more batting friendly, duh, than the one at Barbados. Even if there's lull in the middle overs, India can do with preserving their wickets for a slaughter later on. 122/0 after 17 overs.
The current stand between the Indian openers is the 23rd instance of a 100 plus opening stand involving Shubman Gill. Add another seven that have gone past the 90 mark.
