Earlier Mohammed Shami broke the back of the NZ lower order and starred with 5 wickets even as Daryll Mitchell scored 130 to help the Kiwis post 273 in 50 overs. Rachin Ravindra was the second-highest scorer with 75 as Kuldeep Yadav snapped up 2 wickets
Hardik Pandya’s injury forced India to make a couple of changes in their playing XI. Mohammed Shami played his first game of the World Cup, replacing Shardul Thakur, while Suryakumar Yadav, who was hit on the hands on the eve of the match replaced Hardik Pandya.

India skipper Rohit Sharma has had an illustrious career and will be remembered as one of the best of this generation. However, the next three months will be the most crucial for his career in terms of how he will be remembered and his contribution to Indian cricket both as a batsman and leader.
Rohit became India captain in challenging circumstances when a tug of war was going on between Virat Kohli and the selectors. There was a lot of backlash from fans and a degree of surprise in cricketing circles on how Kohli’s captaincy situation was handled. The stature of Kohli in Indian cricket meant that whoever took the reins next would automatically be under more scrutiny than any captain before him. (Read more)
it is very important to bowl as a unit. We are a package. There is aggression to be seen. We enjoy each other success. We are enjoying dressing room environment. Sometimes important to have good relation with coach (laughs) reports Devendra Pandey from the ground.
Shami: Every wicket is important. The building which is built on each wicket is important. Once you are not playing it is difficult. The way the team was playing I wasn’t found guilty. It is important to enjoy success. I prepared facilities back at home during the lockdown. I prepared (pitch) facilities back in my yard. It benefited me a lot when I went back home. My friends push me a lot to do practice. It helped me. Personally, I enjoy. It is the biggest sport in the country. I try to be positive. I always thought that if not today, I would get Chande tomorrow. If not tomorrow then the day after. So whenever opportunity comes I need to do well. (On upcoming break) activity will remain. There is no off for us. (On wicket)I keep working hard and it’s upon almighty. (On outfield) There is no complaint but jeetna acha milega utna better hoga.
Mitchell: The way India bowl was remarkable. Especially after 40 overs. He(Kohli) is a world class player. A very good knock under pressure. I known Kuldeep for long now. We try to put pressure on bowler on them. I am happy with the way he has progressed over the years: Mitchell on taking on Kuldeep. On fog stopping play: it was strange. I had experience before in Willington. It was amazing experience
Good start to the tournament. Job is half done. Important to stay balanced. Not to think too far ahead. Important to stay in the present. Shami took the oppurtunity with both hands. He has the experience in these conditions and is a class bowler. At one stage, we were looking at 300 plus. Credit to our bowlers at the back end. I am enjoying my batting. Both are different personalities but we (Him and Gill) compliment each other. Happy that we won. Nothing much to say. He (Kohli) has done this for us so many years. He backed himself to do the job. Kohli and Jadeja pulled us back when we lost a few wickets in the middle. The fielding is something we pride ourselves on. Today the fielding wasn't clinical. Ravindra Jadeja is one of the best fielders in the world. These things happen. We know that fielding is something that will decide a lot of things going forward. We love travelling and playing in different parts of the game.
We played reasonably well. We didn't quite capitalize in the last 10. We left a little out there. But credit to India. We weren't able to get the double breakthrough with the ball. Rachin and Mitchell had a fantastic partnership to set us up for the last 10. We have a perfect group. We want to be in those positions. Rachin with the bat, Daryl with the 100. The bowlers did well. He played a fantastic innings. He controlled the tempo for them for others to bat around him. Just try to be proactive and focus on the matchups a little. Another good innings from him. We have a few days off. We have a day game here. We want to do good stuffs.
Got a lot of confidence after taking a wicket on the first ball. If your team mates are doing well, you should support them, it's important that the team performs well, I understand that. It was important to pick those late wickets, you always want your team to be the top side. Very happy that I got those wickets and India is on top of the table..
There are eleven legitimate ways to get a batsman out. But the bowled is perhaps the queen of all dismissals. Even more so when a fast bowler batters the stumps. It’s the ultimate spectacle; the sign of a bowler’s absolute powers, the picture of a batsman’s utter defeat too. In the foothills of the Dhauladhar, Mohammed Shami treated the audience with the spontaneous thrill of blasting batsmen’s stumps.
Three of his five dismissals were bowled. The first one speared onto the stumps from Will Young’s inside edge. Such ‘bowled’ dismissals are of a relatively inferior quality — the half a centimetre of wood the ball brushes before hitting the stumps robs some punch out of the blow. But the second one produced sudden unfettered joy. Mitchell Santner was just a ball into his innings, but he is no imposter with the bat. He has a Test hundred, could clear the fence with orthodox strokes and could at least preserve his wicket, if not pick the seamers to the ropes. (Read more from Sandip G)
That's it folks finally we have it India has beaten New Zealand in an ICC event. It was a perfect win. The only thing which would leave a bitter taste in the mouths of fans is Kohli missing out on his 100. Nevertheless, a win is a win. India will not continue to stay on top of the table and have beaten the other unbeaten side so far in the tournament. As per the Kiwi bowling attack, they could have done nothing different it was only the new ball bowlers who got it wrong. Boult and Henry struggled to bowl the right lines and lengths which effectively cost them the game. New Zealand needs to be a touch careful here as this is the beginning of their run where they start to play big teams and hence they can lose momentum pretty quickly.
Virat Kohli departs for 95. The batter got a little impatient after denying a few singles. He tried to take the bowler on and finish with a six however, could not get the middle and was caught at the cow-corner.
Sriram Veera: Just before that ball, Virat Kohli signalled jadeja to defend. He gestured a defensive stroke, with a smile
Devendra Pandey: Ravindra Jadeja received the loudest applause from the fans at the HPCA Stadium after he defended the last ball of Trent Boult. With Virat Kohli needing a mere 8 runs to score a hundred, the crowd wanted him to defend the last ball of the 47th over.
The one big thing which has gone wrong for New Zealand in their defending this total was how Boult and Henry started. If they had hit their lines and lengths first up and chipped in with a couple of wickets it would have piled on a lot of pressure on India however, it did not happen. The bowlers who followed Lockie, and Santner did their best. Even Rachan who is the fifth bowler in the side stuck to his lines and lengths. However, India batted nicely especially Virat Kohli who has anchored this innings brilliantly and is on verge of another 100.
This might be the first game we are getting into the final stages but we are not sure who is going to win. Kohli and Jadeja are two of the experienced campaigners and will be looking to take this game as deep as possible and force the errors from the bowlers. Latham brought in Phillips as soon as Jadeja walked into the middle but it did not work. Right now he is taking that risk of bowling Rachin to Jadeja. But one left-hander smashed the other one for a maximum. The out-field is now is wet but the dew still is yet to settle on the surface.
When Daryl Mitchell walked into the middle, New Zealand were in a spot of bother in the powerplay with two wickets down and just 19 runs on board. By the time he was dismissed, going for big runs in the final over of the innings, New Zealand had enough on the board for the bowlers to try and defend. Mitchell’s 130 off 127 was a mixture of cautious play and some bold hitting, including against the difficult to hit spinners Kuldeep Yadav and Ravindra Jadeja. The standout feature of his innings was the use of his feet and long levers to find the boundaries and unsettle the bowlers.
Early in his innings, it was evident that Mitchell was not going to let the bowlers dictate terms as they had at the start. Mitchell was New Zealand’s man for the mini crisis. He began by making his intentions clear by advancing down the wicket to upset fast bowler Mohammed Siraj’s length. (Read more from Rahul Pandey)
Suryakumar Yadav got himself run out. He timed the ball but was stopped by a cover fielder courtesy of a brilliant field and he threw it back immediately to the bowler Surya ran almost 3/4th of the pitch Kohli from the other end ran halfway and suddenly withdrew the run which left Surya in no man's land he tried to get back but it was too late and got himself run out. Now India is under a bit of pressure as they have lost a couple of wickets in succession with quite a way to go Ravindra Jadeja has walked into the middle who is yet to face a single ball in this tournament.
Well, the game has moved on quite a bit in the last 10 minutes. Virat Kohli slammed a 50 and it has been another brilliant innings today. While KL Rahul who looked like he would make a big score departed. Rahul came down the track and tried to defend Santner however, the ball hit the pad. The Umpire on-field gave it not ours but Santner reviewed it and on ball tracking we had three reds. Suryakumar Yadav has walked into the middle it is his first game in the tournament and he would be looking to make an impact as well. With less than run-a-ball to get he can take his time.
We have entered the second water break now though still India is ahead in this game it won't take much for New Zealand to make a comeback in this game if they can chip in a few wickets. Once again the dew has not arrived yet and the wicket has gone a bit slower than the innings started. However, one good thing India has been doing well is keeping wickets in hand to capitalise if dew does set in. Latham may try and give Daryl Mitchell a couple of overs not because he would get something out of the surface but because he had a hundred and his golden arm may help New Zealand pick a couple of wickets.
The chase has now got into Virat Kohli's territory where he just tends to dictate the tempo of the innings. It is very difficult to stop him from here on as he has the measure of the surface and has faced all the bowlers now and from here he generally tends to take India home more often than not. Kiwis would be hoping that he makes a mistake by mistiming his shot or an error in judgment in the chase or else it is now seriously drifting away. Latham tried and did everything he could as a captain but with the new ball where there was swing available that's when they failed when Boult and Henry missed their marks.
A good passage of play this for Kiwis they are building in a few quiet overs here. Though India is in a comfortable position right now a couple of quick wickets will pull New Zealand right back into the thick of things. One thing though seems like Latham does not trust any of his other options to pick wickets in the middle overs apart from Lockie as he keeps constantly going back to him again. Also, Indian batters have been giving more respect to the Kiwi spinners than the New Zealand batters Mitchell and Ravindra gave against Kuldeep Yadav and co. Maybe Rahul and Kohli can be a bit more proactive against Ravindra who is the fifth bowler.
KL Rahul played a lovely square drive as the pressure was piling on the batter with a few short balls. It is a good release shot from the batter. Rahul and Kohli have tons of experience under their belt and this is the partnership which might decide the fate of this game. Matt Henry is someone who can hit accurate lines and lengths regularly it seems like Latham missed the trick by not bringing him immediately to bowl when Kohli came in for a few overs especially his tendency to poke at a few balls outside the off-stump early on in his innings.
As the 2023 edition of the World Cup rolls on, here's a look at the players who top the batting charts. (FIND OUT HERE)
Shreyas Iyer departs it is short ball once again which does the trick. Trent Boult was brought into attack just to pick wickets and he did exactly that. He bowled a short one which Iyer pulled straight to deep square leg. India is in a bit of a pickle right now they need to build a partnership. KL Rahul has walked into the middle and Dinesh Karthik on commentary tells us that Rahul is yet to be dismissed in this World Cup. Every time it is looking like India is runnings away with the game New Zealand is chipping in with a wicket.
We have resumed the played and India is looking to milk singles in these middle overs. While Lockie is looking to bowl a few bumpers and rattle Shreyas Iyer Santner from the other end is getting plenty of grip from the surface. We also can see dew coming down now. New Zealand also is yet to use their fifth bowling option however, they have gone back to Trent Boult again. The chase is looking increasingly easy for the Indians because of the change in conditions in the last hour or so.
Devendra Pandey: The game resumed after a halt of more than 10 minutes
To constitute a match, a minimum of 20 overs have to be bowled to the side batting second, subject to a result not being achieved earlier.
Fog has ensured that match comes to halt. The cloud has completely taken over the ground with visibility issue now reports Devendra Pandey
Devendra Pandey: Both the teams have gone back to dressing room, umpires are in consultation, hoping that fog fades away
Devendra Pandey: Fog covered two floodlights pole, umpire wanted to continue but Virat Kohli-Shreyas Iyer said they can't see. As fog has began to cover entire one stretch of the ground. The umpire later decided to wait
We have a unique problem here in the stadium. There has been plenty of fog that has come up out of nowhere and it has taken over the entire ground and viewing the ball has become difficult. The players are walking off now because of the lack of visibility stay with us for further updates.
Another one bites the dust it is Lockie who strikes twice now. He bowled a wide short delivery outside the off-stump which Gill tried to cut the over-the-point region however, got the edge and the ball flew to the batter at third-man Mitchell took a good catch. Two wickets in quick succession now for the Kiwis this is the opening they needed with two new batters at the crease and they would be hoping to pick a few more. Mitchell Santner too is bowling beautifully from the other end. The game looked like it was running away from New Zealand and is back in balance yet again.
Lockie Ferguson has picked up the first wicket. The bowler bowled a nothing delivery Rohit tried to poke the ball outside the off-stump got the under edge and the ball hit the stumps. This has been phenomenal batting from Rohit Sharma this tournament the way he has gone about things has been reminiscent of Virender Sehwag from 2011. Once again he did his job today by taking India to a flying start. Virat Kohli has walked into the middle. The dew has not come in yet and the surface is gripping a bit for Santner. India should build another partnership here.
Shubman Gill becomes the fastest to score 2,000 runs in men's ODIs in terms of innings taken. Gill has achieved this in 38 innings, the previous record was held by Hashim Amla who got there in 40 innings. It's been a flying start to Gill's international career and it is reflected in this stat.
Rohit Sharma has done it to Shaheen Afridi, today it was Trent Boult's turn. Every cricket fan around the world, and their neighbours, know that the two left-armers start their spell by swinging in the first ball. Afridi has got Rohit with that ploy in the past but that's history. This World Cup Rohit is in a zone. Against Pakistan, Afridi tried the in-curler again but Rohit flicked it for four. Kiwi new ball bowler Boult did the same on the first two balls of the innings. The Indian skipper defended the first but hit a boundary on the second.
Did you read that somewhere? Yes, we told you. (Read more from Sandeep Dwivedi)
We had quite a bit of drama here. Boult bowled a full one which Rohit drove back and the ball hit the stumps at the non-strike end. Boult appealed for a runout at the non-striker end as Gill was backing up for a single. In the replay, although there was no conclusive evidence that the ball clipped Boult's fingers the umpire deciphered it as the ball touched his fingers however, despite all the drama Gill was in his crease comfortably. Amidst all that Rohit early in the over hit another six off Boult when he smashed his knuckleball straight down the ground. This is a decent start for India not losing early in the piece.
Rohit has started with intent yet again. He went down the track and smashed Henry over the cow-corner which forced the seamer to pull his length back a bit and then he leg-glanced the very next ball for another boundary in very Rohit Sharma fashion. It is heartwarming to see the Indian batters treating the Kiwi bowlers the same way did every other opposition. New Zealand bowlers too are not getting rattled and are continuing to stick to their plans which they have come up with. Shubman Gill at the other end is biding his time at the time and once he gets his eye in expect more fireworks.
Trent Boult has taken the new ball for the Kiwis as expected however, did not get much movement. He might get in the next over as the ball loses a bit of shine. Matt Henry will take it from the other end. This is the opening bowling combination which has created troubles for the Indian top-order time and again. If India can play through their way for a bit and get themselves in there are no better batting conditions in the world than this ground because of the altitude and dew which will come latter. How first things first they have to negotiate this new ball.
It took a bit longer to get into my rhythm. The Indian bowlers did really well in the powerplay as well. However, as the game went by, the partnerships started to grow. I think we looked at the 280 mark while batting, the pitch was a bit low. They pegged us back with their death bowling. They bowled really well in the end. I think Jadeja and Kuldeep didn’t get too much turn, but the seamers had a bit of up and down bounce. Hopefully, our boys can do something similar.
And that's that folk who fightback this from the Indian side in the final 10 overs of the innings. The death bowling has been top-notch from the hosts. Shami nailed his yorkers exceptionally well and picked up four wickets in his final spell a fiffer overall. Kuldeep Yadav too who started badly got better and better as the innings went on. However, credit must be given to Daryl Mitchell for the fantastic knock he played. He came in when things were not looking good but batted through brilliantly. It is hard to see if this score is par or not we only have to see. If there will be any dew then bowling would be justified and in the second innings new ball will definitely do a bit for Boult and Henry under the lights and that will be the passage on which this game might be decided upon.
Bumrah picks up his first wicket of the evening. It was a slower one that bowled hard at the surface. Chapman tried to pull the ball but was beaten by the slower one and Virat Kohli at deep square leg took an excellent catch. New Zealand are now six down. They have been losing wickets in clusters at the backend. As we were updating Shami bowled a pearl of a yorker to pick Mitchell Santner and the blackcaps are now seven down. This has been an excellent fightback from the Indian's brilliant death bowling plans from Rohit and Co. The batters now need to give a strike to Mitchell. Shami picks up another one with a yorker.
Sandip Gopal: It had the makings of a classic mess-up. Even more so as India have been clumsy on the field, dropping some easy catches. So when Jasprit Bumrah, Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul converged under a miscued shot of Glenn Phillips, disaster loomed. But Sharma kept screaming that it was his catch, stopping the advances of his colleagues just in the nick of the time, before he grabbed the steepler. After completing the catch. Sharma let out a scream of relief. Understandably so.
Vinayakk: With Daryl Mitchell targetting him early on, Kuldeep Yadav struggled to contain the run-flow. After his first 5 overs, his figures read 0/48. But a superb fightback from him, as he varied his pace nicely. (Even bowled one above 110kph). In his next five overs, his figures were 2/25.
Sandip G: Ronaldinho boasted arguably the best first touch in the game. No matter how hard it was struck, no matter the spin or swerve, long or short, away or close to his body, the ball listened to his orders. So it is with Ravindra Jadeja when intersecting boundary-bound balls near the ropes. Daryl Mitchell had brutally flicked a Jasprit Bumrah full ball just wide of long on. It seemed scorching to the boundary before Jadeja calmly intervened, neatly stopping the ball with his instep. Often, the ball ricochets, but here it fell dead upon his first touch.
Glenn Phillips departs the Indian spinner tossed on up which the Kiwi batter tried to hit out of the park but could not get the timing right. Three fielders came under to take the catch but eventually, Rohit finished off the catch. Now the Kiwis have a new batter in Mark Chapman who is a designated finisher in this line-up but facing Bumrah won't be easy in this phase of the game as soon as you have walked in. Brilliant spell though from Kuldeep how he has turned things around. He started badly however, adopted to the conditions and what batters were doing and started bowling well.
Though in the middle overs, it seemed like India was losing their way they would be happy how things are at this point in time. They have pulled back things nicely and now it is all about closing down these final overs with out getting much damage done. Bumrah would be key in these overs the catch is how would Rohit will use Shami and Siraj who are a bit vulnerable in these stages of the game because of their lack of skill to bowl a yorker as accurately as Bumrah can deliver. India still have an over of Kuldeep Yadav left which Rohit might be looking to use if a wicket falls.
100 for Daryl Mitchell a brilliant innings from the New Zealand number four. When he came into bat his side was in trouble however, he took his time initially and started to attack Kuldeep when he came into the attack which pushed back the hosts on the back foot for a brief spell in this innings. It was an excellently calculated inning without putting a foot wrong. However he went a little slower when came near his landmark which is understandable. Now his job is to stay till the end and do some damage. It has gone dark here in Dharmashala completely we might have dew coming in early in the piece and it will be interesting to see how the Kiwis rotate their spinners.
A good fightback from the Indians in the last 30 minutes or so. They have picked up a couple of wickets and have pulled the run rate down. Kuldeep despite going for runs did not lose his head he continued to do what he does best and finally reaped the rewards as he picked up Tom Latham. Meanwhile, Mitchell has played a fantastic knock and is one run away from his ton. India still has four overs of Bumrah that can be used in the final 10 which are not easy to hit for the Kiwis. New Zealand would be looking to get at least 320-330 from here on or they might be very disappointed after how Ravindra and Mitchell batted.
Kuldeep continues and Latham with a paddle sweep to get 3 as Rohit Sharma prevents it from trickling over the boundary ropes. The next ball Mitchell just places for four!! Not what Kuldeep was expecting but very smart from the Kiwi batter. Huge shout for an LBW now, could be close and is given!! Latham reviews immediately. No bat involved and the NZ skipper is already walking before the ball tracking is shown. And yes, inevitably the wicket is gone
Bumrah has been brought back into the attack and Mitchell smashes him for a boundary. Not a great welcome for the pacer. Bumrah with a vicious yorker next and Mitchell digs deep and defends. He ends the over by erring his line as Mitchell plays fine for a boundary.
Kuldeep in to bowl the next over and after a dot, Mitchell paddle sweeps and takes a single. Latham on strike and sweeps over Bumrah's head for a boundary!! 7 from this over.
AND GONE!! India finally get the breakthrough and after a few dropped chances, this one sticks for the hosts. Ravindra has to walk back with Shami nabbing his second wicket.
Kuldeep Yadav will bowl the 33rd and after some quiet initial deliveries, Mitchell has skied it!! Bumrah in place and oh dear god!! He has dropped him!!
We are headed into the second water break and this phase clearly belongs to New Zealand. They have batted superbly post the Powerplay after loosing a couple of early wickets. The position they have got themselves in they would be looking definitely to get at least 320-330 from here on. Kuldeep has been brought back into his second spell and he continued to go for runs. His remaining five overs and how Rohit would be looking to get through them will be interesting to see. One good thing to smile of Indian fans is Bumrah still has his six overs remaining.
Vinayakk: Ravindra (Jadeja) dropped (Reaching) Ravindra early on when India could have had New Zealand three down early. Now KL Rahul dropped Daryl Mitchell when India are getting desperate for a breakthrough. Post match fielding video should be interesting. India's catching has been good in the tournament so far but they have missed couple of massive opportunities today.
Sandip Gopal: Though he was not playing the game, the cameras kept following Kane Williamson, with his flowing mendicant beard. Often he has a cup of coffee with him too. He is a coffee aficionado. Back home, he heads to The Luca on the Maunganui Road, where he grabs a magazine, reclines to a table and sips the favourite flat white. Extra hot. The shop’s owner,Alex, calls him the Buddha with a coffee mug.
Devendra Pandey: Dharamsala can witness some drastic weather change. It was a bit shiny a few minutes ago and now it has become a bit hazy. As a result the umpires had asked for the floodlights. As the game progresses the weather will turn cold too.
