IND vs ENG Highlights, 4th Test Day 3: Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal take India to 40/0 at stumps needing 152 more runs to win in Ranchi

From the slips, Joe Root rushed to embrace him; from mid-on, Ben Stokes strolled to commiserate him. Even the fiery Ollie Robinson tapped his shoulder. The Ranchi crowd, 10,000-odd, stood up and applauded him. Dhruv Jurel, falling for a priceless 90, walked back gently, soaking in the applause, waving his bat to all corners of the ground, discontent that he missed his hundred but content that he had pulled his team out of trouble.

That's for today. Rohit had a big smile on his face as he walked back with Jaiswal. It sums up the day he had as a skipper and so did the team. Captaincy from Ben Stokes has been pretty ordinary in that final 30 minutes or so. Not only the using of spinners but also the fields given to them was quite puzzling. Singles were easily taken off in each over and added to that inaccurate bowling did not make matters any easier for England's skipper. It has been India's day. If England needs to have a say in this game they need to pick a few quick wickets in the morning. As of now, that is from our side. Do join us in the morning to catch all the live action.

This has been a pretty ordinary piece of bowling from Hartley. He is bowling full tosses and half-volleys which Rohit is feasting up. Once again while it is understandable to start with Hartley from one end starting with Joe Root does not make much sense. Stokes could have gone in with one of the pacers from the other end. The England skipper would have commanded some control in this defense. As of now, India has got itself to a decent start in this run-chase. Since the mauling the England spinners took in Rajkot captaincy from Stokes has been pretty ordinary. 

Two overs have been done here. The England bowlers have floated the balls up to the batters and have batters have found them easy to get away. Also, it is a strange field set from the English skipper here. It is a spread field that allows both Rohit and Jaiswal to get away with easy singles. While it is acceptable in the third innings this kind of field it is hard to understand in the fourth with India having a target in front of them. It is the maidens that will put pressure on the Indian batters not the lack of boundaries. 

R Ashwin gets James Anderson and Ben Foakes in the same over to pick up a five-wicket haul. This has been a fabulous bowling performance from India today afternoon and evening which has pulled this game back on level terms. However, these are a lot of runs to chase given how the pitch is behaving at the moment. There is a lot more turn and invariable bounce on offer. India needs to be wary of that and have to approach their chase accordingly. It will be a thrilling fourth innings folks so do stay with us to catch all the live action. 

Foakes trying to reverse sweep the ball gets the under edge. Though Ashwin appealed and was given out Foakes reviewed and lives to fight another day. Rohit during the first Test used an interesting tactic against Ben Stokes where he spread the field completely and only let Stokes have all the strike and he used Ashwin and Bumrah from either end. It is interesting to see he is not willing to go with that strategy today to Foakes. Also, Sanjay Manjrekar in commentary reckons India would not like to bat in the mini-passage that they would get to bat in the evening if they bowl out England here. 

We have reached the water break of the evening session. We might see a change in strategy from either side and hopefully some change in momentum in this game. As of now, it is going at a snail's pace. Wonder what might be instruction given to Ben Foakes given England keeps boasting about playing attacking cricket in adverse situations. Here is one of them and the situation too demands Foakes to be as attacking as possible. But seems like England wants to skin the cat differently this time around in the series. 

Right on cue, Rohit has thrown the ball to Ashwin. Things have come to a standstill here the last few overs have all gone in a similar pattern where the Foakes took the single and asked the Bashir to survive a couple of deliveries. We only have to see what the strategy from England is. Even if they feel they want to make sure they bat till wicket as bad as possible they don't have enough runs to play that game yet. They need another 20-30 runs to be sure that they can win this contest. As if now they are hoping for a miracle with the ball from someone. 

Ben Foakes needs to do a Dhruv Jurel here. The Indian keeper played a fabulous innings and Foakes could match at least half of it England will win this game. As of now, it has been just blocking the marathon from both the innings. May be it is a deliberate strategy from England to survive and make sure the pitch would deteriorate as much as possible. Also, India might consider bringing back Ashwin in for a spell just to see if there will be a change in approach from the right-handers against the off-spinners. 

Kuldeep is in the middle of a fabulous spell here. It feels like every delivery he is bowling will yield a wicket. Ben Foakes needs to try and take the bulk of the strike against him and get some runs here. Looks like there is no clear plan here on how England wants to go about in the current situation. Foakes is not renowned for his power game has to try and do something out of his comfort zone. If he is just looking to block it out sooner or rather a ball will come with his name on it or the way Kuldeep is bowling it is highly unlike Bashir or Anderson can survive. 

Hartley tries to pummel Kuldeep down the ground but gets nowhere near the middle. Sarfaraz who was standing a few feet in from the long-on boundary took an excellent diving catch in front of him. Kuldeep has picked his third it has been a fabulous spell of bowling from the wrist spinner. As we update Kuldeep Yadav pickes Robinson. The batter tried to reverse sweep the first ball against Kuldeep and was given out for appeal however, he reviewed and there was a glove. But this time he tried to get his stride forward and defend the ball and missed it and was given out LBW. Robinson reviews the decision to find wickets hitting is umpire's call. 

Tom Hartley got off the mark with a six towards long-on. It has been one of the features of his innings throughout the series where from time to time he tends to get that boundary. India needs to be careful here and not let Hartley get a cameo here as that would take England into a better position. Right now India is all over England and they need to try and bowl them out under 150-160 to have more than a chance to win. The moment England's lead goes over 220-240 India will be looking down the barrel, especially the way this wicket is playing. 

Kuldeep Yadav is turning the ball square here. He is looking in good rhythm he is putting a lot of energy into every delivery. We also are witnessing that extra bounce he got in Rajkot. Yes, Bashir did bowl well in the first innings and Hartley has been good throughout the series would it have been better for England to go with another spinner in this game instead of two-seamers which is something Ben Stokes will ponder upon? When Jack Leach was injured no replacement was named for him if they had done that they could have had a third spin option today despite Rehan Ahmed's absence.

It is going to be another absorbing session coming up. The session may decide the direction of the game. As we update Ravindra Jadeja picks Jonny Bairstow as the batter tries to push a ball and is caught at close mid-wicket.

Dhruv Jurel’s “salute” gesture after reaching his maiden Test fifty on Day 3 against England has gone viral. The 23-year-old scored a fighting 90 to take India to 307 runs and cut down England’s first-innings lead to 46 runs in the fourth Test.

After getting to his fifty from 96 balls, the the wicketkeeper-batsman quickly saluted the crowd. Thereafter, he changed gears, taking the English spin duo of Shoaib Bashir and Tom Hartley to cleaners. (Read more)

Ben Stokes was the last man to depart. He got his stride forward Kuldeep who bowls into the left-hander turned one away from the batter and the bat hit the pad and rolled onto the stumps. Stokes has been utterly disappointed with the dismissal. This has been a productive session for India they have picked up five wickets. Kuldeep looked brilliant in the mini spell he bowled. England need at least 80-100 runs from here on to stay in the game. As of now let us all take a small breather and do join us after a Tea break. 

Kuldeep lines a slew of deliveries towards the off-stump and Bairstow defends the ball with some solidity. A bit of room on offer and Bairstow glides it behind backward point for two runs.

Jadeja offers a low full-toss and Stokes clips the ball through mid-wicket for two runs. LOUD SHOUT as Jadeja gets one to skid through to hit Stokes high on the pad. Rod Tucker isn't interested but Jadeja and the fielders plead with Rohit. He takes a referral with a second on the clock. UMPIRE'S CALL on wickets and Stokes gets a breather!

Knocked him over! Kuldeep hits timber as the ball keeps a tad low from length. Crawley misses it altogether as he stands tall deep into the crease to drive the ball through cover. Big wicket for India as Ben Stokes comes in at 6. Stokes leans to the backfoot as Kuldeep flips one through. A ripper to end the over as Kuldeep gets massive turn from the fuller length past Stokes' bat.

Crawley employs a pretty straight bat to cover the probing line that Jadeja has attempted to bowl on. A couple of drifters swoosh past the outside-edge and Crawley swings one big down the line to mid-off for a quick singl.e

Jadeja wafts the ball in and Crawley gets a thick outside-edge past first-slip for FOUR. A single to follow. Beaten all ends up. Jadeja tosses one on the full and it skids through as Bairstow attempts an expansive drive through cover. Jurel fails to latch onto the ball and misses a stumping chance as Bairstow drags his foot outside the crease.

Zak Crawley has notched up his 13th Test fifty, third of this series. Top knock this from the England opener. Will he be able to convert it into a century? England - 97 for 3 after 24 overs. England lead by 144 runs

Jonny Bairstow brings out his late cut to collect another boundary. The fourth wicket partnership is worth 31 now. England - 96 for 3 after 23.3 overs. England lead by 142 runs

Maiden from Ravindra Jadeja. Bairstow doesn't look comfortable at all against Jadeja. Rohit must give the ball to Kuldeep yadav from one end. The wrist-spinner can do the trick for his captain. England - 88 for 3 after 22 overs. England lead by 134 runs

Zak Crawley is fighting it out in the middle. This is quite an uncharacteristic innings from the England opener but has scored at a quick rate. Three runs came from Ashwin's over and Crawley moves to 46  England - 88 for 3 after 21 overs. England lead by 134 runs

What a shot by Jonny Bairstow. Siraj tries to bowl a number and Bairstow dismisses it with some authority. This is really positive and proactive batting from Bairstow in his 99th Test match. He is up and running. Nine runs came from Siraj's over.  England - 85 for 3 after 20 overs. England lead by 131 runs

Drilled down the ground by Jonny Bairstow. He gets closed to the ball and muscled it. England will love to get Bairstow back in form. The England No  5 has struggled throughout the series. Ashwin has three now and he will be looking to add more to his tally. The veteran spinner is yet to bag a five-wicket haul in this series. England - 76 for 3 after 19 overs. England lead by 122 runs

Siraj slants the ball in and Crawley flicks it to square-leg for a single. Inside-edge from length and Bairstow is off the blocks. Slower-ball on length and Crawley watchfully nudges the ball towards short mid-wicket. Another ball on to the pads and Crawley directs it down leg for FOUR.

Ashwin beats Crawley's outside-edge with a quick slider that shoots diagonally off the turf. He drills the next ball down to long-on for a single. Ashwin drops short to Root who nudges it short fine-leg but does not find a single. Fuller ball and Root taps it back towards the bowler. LOUD SHOUT as Ashwin yorks Root with a quicker delivery. Is that in line for an lbw? Ashwin persuades Rohit for a review. The ball pitched on the leg-stump line and seems to have straightened enough. OUT! THREE REDS and Ashwin roars in delight!

Mohammed Siraj replaces Jadeja. He finds his favour good length trajectory on point first-up. Root bends low to keep out a couple of deliveries that do not bounce. 

Ashwin shuffles through his repertoire of deliveries but Root is standing firm in the crease and manoeuvering the deliveries with supple wrists. Just one run from the over.

Jadeja overpitches and Crawley takes a big stride forward to smear the ball through extra cover. The spinners have been subdued again and runs are coming at ease for England now. Pressure mounts on Rohit.

Ashwin swaps sides to around the stumps. Root leans back in the crease and taps the ball through point for a single. England leads by 100! Ashwin tosses one on length and Crawley mistimes a hit towards mid-off, falling short of the fielder.

Ashwin is drawing straighter lines this time. Crawley and Root comfortably work the ball through the on-side to reel in four runs. India will have to check the flow of runs at some point now.

Straighter delivery from Jadeja on the full and Crawley bisects the leg-side field by steering it through mid-wicket for FOUR. A couple of signles to follow and the runs continue to come at a steady click for England.

Ashwin tosses one into the slot and Crawley leans into a lofted stroke over mid-off for FOUR. Ashwin darts one in towards the leg-stump and Crawley drags it to short mid-wicket. Ashwin overpitches and Crawley drills the ball past mid-off for FOUR. Crawley on the charge. Ashwin goes full once again and Crawley clears his front leg and creams the ball past mid-off for another FOUR.

Jadeja checks Root's forward defence with a slew of straight deliveries on length. Root remains solid and pushes one through cover for a single. Two from the over as Crawley drags a length ball to long-off for one run.

Ashwin on a hat-trick. The undercutter on length and Crawley manages to keep it off the stumps. A single to follow. Ashwin slides the ball in and Root nudges it to short-leg.

The field is all chirpy now as Jadeja skims through his over in customary fashion. Joe Root has a job on his hands as he pairs up with Crawley. Three from the over.

Skid and a jump off the surface and the ball springs off the inside-edge to Sarfaraz. Ollie Pope is in at 3. A fine shooter to follow as Ashwin darts one in to hit Duckett on the pads, with he ball sliding down leg. Ashwin overpitches and Duckett switch-hits him through point for FOUR.

Right, no horsing around here as Ravindra Jadeja operates from the opposite end. Duckett starts proactively with a ramp behind Jurel, beating fine leg for FOUR. Roht immediately brings in the short-fine. Duckett attempts a switch-hit but misses it completely. Not a clean taek by Jurel and the batters sneak in a bye. Beaten. Jadeja wafts one through the air and Crawley leans forward outside the off-stump but the ball zips past the edge.

A cracking delivery to start with as Ashwin beats Crawley's outside-edge. Another loopy delivery and Crawley charges to drivthe ball down to long-on for a single. He comes around the stumps to Duckett and a slider keeps a touch low as Duckett manages to keep it out. A single to end the over.

England may have a 46-run lead on a dicey pitch but India wouldn't be too disappointed after adding 88 runs in the first session for the loss of their last three wickets. Jurel has played his role to perfection, farming the strike and attacking the bowlers with tremendous composure. India will be eager to knock the opposition out early after the lunch break.

Bashir comes around the stumps and tosses one on length and Jurel smokes him over long-on for SIX. Room on offer and Jurel drives the ball to deep cover for a single. Short ball and Akash drives it back to the bowler. Laudable restraint from the debutant no. 10 as he blocks down another tempter in the slot.

Jurel negotiates four deliveries and easily directs a length ball to the off-side for a single. Akash needs to put in a dive to save himself but the frustration is slowly creeping into the fielders.

Bashir lands one in the slot and Jurel pumps the ball down the ground for a SIX, straight over the sightscreen. Another half-volley and Jurel drills it down the ground for a FOUR. A single to follow and Akash sees off the last two balls. India staying afloat nicely.

Jurel continues to negate Hartley with a sturdy defence. Stokes strengthens the leg-side field with a deep square-leg in place. Jurel taps a length ball towards point but does not get the single. He squirts out another ball from middle-and-leg towards mid-off and finds the single off the last delivery.

Bashir replaces Anderson. Streaky from Akash as he attempts a slog-sweep that just clears Robinson at mid-wicket for a single. Jurel charges and chips another length ball and it burst past the mid-wicket fielder for another single. A reprieve for Jurel as he retains strike.

Jurel drives to Hartley to long-off, no run. He continues to stand solid in defence but Stokes is ensuring that his options are limited in attack. Hartley strays to the pads and Jurel unfurls the slog-sweep through square-leg for FOUR. Last ball of the over, Jurel taps the ball to mid-on but fails to reel in the single to retain strike. Anderson gets a clean look at Akash now.
