India vs England, 2nd Test Day 2 Highlights: Root, Brook resist Siraj, Deep; ENG 77/3 vs IND at Stumps

Rishabh Pant is making sure that the umpires notice every second that the England batters are wasting and we are into that part of the day where the batters try to take as much time as possible between balls. But it is Jadeja bowling and so despite Brook's best efforts, India are going to squeeze in one more over.

And then yet another change, interestingly. Prasidh Krishna replaced Akash Deep in the 15th over, Brook welcomed him with a flick away for four off the very first ball which was too full and straight. Just a single after that in that over after which Nitish Kumar Reddy replaces Siraj at the other end. Just the one run in that over and then Jadeja takes the ball for the next over. Wonder if it is a change of ends for Prasidh? Root is on 16 off 27, Brook on 23 off 38.

And India yet to introduce a bowling change after 13 overs. Akash Deep just got done with his seventh over, now Siraj coming back for his seventh. It will be a bit of a surprise if Prasidh Krishna doesn't bowl the next one, although it has to be said that Deep and Siraj are inducing at least one chance per over even now. Deep ended the 13th over with a back of a length delivery that straightens just that slight bit off the seam, Brook pushed at it and he was very lucky to not get an edge on it. 

He is on 16 off 30, Root on 11 off 17.

Right, we will probably have just over 10 overs left to play toay. Harry Brook and Joe Root have both scored five runs thus far, the former off 18 balls and the latter off 10. Siraj and Akash Deep have bowled five overs each. England are three down in the first 10 overs without Bumrah. Imagine if he was there...

Three wickets in the closing stages of the final session, this is officially India's day through and through. Crawley has been driving away today, got a couple of nice shots through. But Siraj drags his length back a bit and Crawley fails to adjust. Stays on the front foot and it gets big on him a bit, he takes a waft. It takes a thick edge, Karun Nair crouches down nicely at first slip and catches the ball at eye level. Very good technique there by Nair as well, Siraj punches the air in angry ecstacy.

Root is on four off nine balls,. Crawley on 12 off 23. Siraj beat Root's outside edge with a shot ball, bit of a movement away from the former England captain who takes a swing at it but doesn't connect. 

Apart from that, very few chances thus far for the Indians since Deep's double strike.

EDGED AND GONE AGAIN! Golden duck for Ollie Pope! This one was full, nipping away, Pope closes the face of his bat. Thick edge and Rahul,  standing at second slip, juggled it once before completing the catch.

Ben Duckett, the man who crushed India on Day 5 at Headingley, is gone for a duck! Deep's fourth ball in the third over is pitched in that corridor around off, Duckett hangs his bat out, thick edge and it goes flying to Gill's left. Gill had just returned to the field, remember, he didn't walk out with the rest of the team which is why Rahul gave the team talk. He dives to his left and takes the catch with both hands despite being out there for less than five minutes.

Two brilliant straight drives from Zak Crawley and well, if that is a sign of things to come, India are in for a long, long time in the field. Akash Deep bowled the first over surprisingly, not Siraj, he pitches the second ball up in the channel and Crawley just leans into the drive down the ground to open England's account for this innings with a four. Crawley flicks the third ball through square leg to run two. A no ball after that and then Crawley smashes the fourth ball back past the bowler for four. Single next ball and then Duckett defends the last ball. 

Siraj to steam in from the other end. 

It is KL Rahul leading the team talk, wearing a pair of shades that is reminiscent of the kind you would see Shahrukh Khan wear in a movie like Badshah all those years ago. It is a long talk and when they break, Siraj takes his cap off. India have a whopping 587 runs to defend but this England team can actually chase it down inside two sessions if they are allowed to. They have done that before. In fact, this is the fourth time that they have conceded over 500 runs in the first innings of a Test match with Stokes as captain. They won the previous three. 

Well Bashir tempted and tempted Siraj, the latter kept resisting but then comes forward to a floater of a carrom ball last ball of that over. Siraj comes forward, misses it entirely and Smith whacks off the bails. At long, long last, England's bowlers can put up their feet for what they would hope would be a long time. 

And to make matters worse for England, Bashir is clearly starting to get some turn on this pitch. Prasidh and Siraj are slowly starting to approach that terrirory where they frustrate England. It will be quite interesting to see if Gill will allow these two to bat till stumps today if they manage that or give England's openers some jittery deliveries to fave right at the end. 

For now, Siraj has pocketed his red-blooded big swings. He has scored seven runs in 20 balls, Prasidh Krishna on two off 11. 

He gets down on one knee and tries to slam Bashir's second ball in the 145th over down the ground. Deep ends up holing out to Ben Duckett at long-on.

Pulled and caught at square leg! A soft dismissal but that ends an innings that will be spoken about for years and years to come. Tongue's third ball of the 144th over is short, Gill tries to roll his wrists over it but fails to keep it down. As straightforward a catch as it can get for Ollie Pope. He walks of to a standing ovation from every single soul in this stadium. A truly extraordinary innings.

Gill kept strike remember and so he will be facing up for the first ball of the third session. Expect him to shift gears a bit, he has scored 265 in 380 balls now. India resume on 564/7 in 141 overs.

It is another session where India has dominated, and Shubman Gill kept batting through. This session was the first time England acknowledged, with their bowling changes they were losing grip in this game. The body language was getting flatter and flatter, and the ball was doing less and less. However, there was one delivery which did turn and that got the wicket of Sundar, which is a huge a positive for the Indian side especially they went out of their way to pick two tweakers in the team. However, the discussion in the dressing room might be about declaration, we will be right back to give you all the updates post Tea.

Sundar has fallen here. It would be a bittersweet moment, while he will be sad that he did lose his stumps, also he would be happy that the ball did turn sharply, and when his opportunity comes to bowl, he can give it a good rip to get more out of the surface. This is where this wicket is quite different from what we have seen in Leeds. There, the wicket remained true for all the days, but here things have altered quite significantly. The pitch is slow, and it will continue to get slower and India, with their two spinners, might just have played into India's hands in this game.

It will be interesting to see how England approaches this. As of now as the session went on, Stokes was reluctant to bring back his ace bowlers; he tried to maintain Bashir with other bowlers. India after Tea might come and take the run rate to the next level, and we are looking at a possibility of 650-700 here if Gill and Sundar get stuck into the bowling. However, while England's batting order is a positive one, they can combust at times because of the shots they try and score, and these are too many runs to play too freely if they end up with an underpar score that will affect this game very badly.

Shoaib Bashir is being peppered here. Although his economy might not look that bad but it is for the resistance of Shubman Gill to go after him. He has been pretty measured and composed at various points, but whenever he wanted to have a release, he just hit him in the areas of his will. All this number of overs will take quite a bit of toil on the bodies of English players, especially Bashir who might have an even bigger role in the second innings. While there is a carrom ball which Bashir is using at this point in time but he needs more flight and guile on these conditions. As we update Gill scores 250.

It does seem like it is going to be one of those series where plenty of runs will be scored from both sides. As of now, India is on top, but England when they get their opportunity to bat, not only will they look to score runs, but they will look to score them pretty quickly. If India can put England in a situation where they have to play for a draw to take the lead, that will be a pretty interesting dynamic. Although having said that, Indian bowling will have its own flaws the likes of Siraj and Prasidh playing their second game should be better than Leeds but how will Akash Deep respond will be interesting to see.

Well, it has been India's hour. They have batted well, quite brilliantly, especially Sundar After, the break, his pacing of the innings has been quite magnificent. While he has complemented Gill well but also ensured that when there is a ball to hit, he deposited it in the stands. England too now seems to be playing and hoping for a declaration. One of the out-of-the-box things India could do is they can bat till tomorrow morning, just wait for England to bowl them out. In 2021 when Joe Root's England reached Indian shores in the first Test in Chennai they have used a similar ploy.

Shubman Gil has now become the highest scorer for India against England in England. Gill has now surpassed Sunil Gavaskar’s score of 221 scored in the drawn fourth Test at the Oval in 1971.

India might now consider starting to think about declaring here. Shubman Gill is well set, and so is Sundar. Ben Stokes has turned to Harry Brook, the body language has altered, no matter how positive you are as a team, things do turn around when the opposition gets on top. Some of those shots Gill played against Brook, there was nothing in anger, it was beautiful, he was playing each ball on its merit and was getting the boundaries away so easily. He is looking good for a 300 here the way he is batting this is the most purest Gill has looked with his bat ever.

Shubman Gill becomes the 26th Indian cricketer to hit a Test double hundred. 12 Indian cricketers have one Test double hundred and Gill becomes the 13th Indian Test cricketer with one Test double hundred. It’s India’s 50th Test double hundred. Virat Kohli holds the record for most double hundreds by an Indian batsman with seven double hundreds.

England needs to be worried now. The ploy of having Sundar at eight is bearing good for India. The partnership is hurting England big time. All the limitations in their bowling are coming to the surface. Stokes needs to find a way to get the breakthroughs here, as the longer this keeps going, India will pile on more and more runs. Gill, especially, is looking good for another 100 here the way he is going in the middle. Not only the workload of bowlers which is the problem for England but also the wicket detoritarting if there is no rain we might see surface starting to take some turn from tomorrow on.

A single through fine leg and Gill gets to his 200. What a superb innings this has become. The captaincy has got the better of Gill. He has started a bit slowly in a very unlike Gill way, but as the innings went on, he picked up the pace. Some of the driving through the offside today has been magnificent. Gill is showing in this series that the next generation is ready, and he is going to take that number four spot for a long time. This is brilliant news for the Indian cricket especially the Indian Test side. England needs to come up with some serious plans here, or the way Gill is batting, this score can be anything.

Shubman Gill continues where he left off before the break. He has batted seamlessly today. Regardless of what happens next in the series, this is turning out to be Virat Kohli's 2014 to Australia. This is what all the great players in history do when they are doubhted, there are questions raised about their ability and place in the side, they would come out and answer it with their runs. That is what Gill is doing here. One thing is clear he is ready for the responsibility, and it brings the best out of him. However, the captaincy side of things will come as he keeps progressing.

It has been quite a sedate start to this session. The singles are coming quite easily for both Gill and Sundar, and Stokes did use the short ball tactic for a while before the break, but as of now things seem to have altered slightly. It is also interesting how little Woakes has bowled today. Although he did not have a good morning spell, he still is England's best bowler, and it might not have been a bad idea for Stokes to start with Woakes in this session. He is a very accurate bowler, and from one end, short ball being peppered and the other end a perfect military line might be a tad bit too much for Sundar to handle.

Bashir and Tongue are resuming post the break here in Edgbaston. More than Gill, it will be interesting to see how Sundar will approach this innings. He is quite an adaptable cricketer is Washington Sundar, who can play the attacking game and also has the defence to keep the ball out and not get out. However, with India having the runs on the board and bowlers also having bowled quite a of overs, it might not be a bad ploy for Sundar to take the route of Jadeja and play that balanced attacking and defensive form of cricket from here on.

We are back. The sun is shining bright here in England, and so is Shubman Gill. From England's perspective, they would be hoping to bundle out India in this session, and on the other hand, India will be hoping to bat through this session and get closer to 500.

India is set to make three changes for the second Test against England to improve team balance, especially on a potentially spin-friendly pitch. Shubman Gill, the Indian captain, showcased true leadership in the second Test at Headingley. After self-critically admitting he should have scored more in the first Test despite a 147, he delivered an unbeaten 114 in the second. That's the break, it was a timely wicket for England as they have picked up Jadeja right before the break. However, in normal circumstances, India should still be able to go on and make 500 from here with the platform they have got. But for that lot remains in the hands of Shubman Gill from here on. He has already gone past 150, but he still needs to get to 200 for India to post a winnable total. As per England, that wicket of Jadeja is a breather as the session and the game were running away from them quite quickly. Do stay with us, we will be right back after a short break.

It was a short delivery from Josh Tongue, which took off, and Jadeja tried to fend the ball, gloved, and the ball looped in the air. Jamie Smith, behind the wicket, went to his left and took a lovely catch. It was a nice innings, and something like that was required to get rid of well-set Jadeja.

Well, it is always too early with this Indian team, they have collapsed from 430/3 in the previous game, while today things are going well and there are two set batters in the middle, it might not be such a bad thought in the dressing room for the first time to think about declaration. If they are looking at 550 the next session with either of Jadeja or Gill batting through, they will get there; however, how this England team bats and the way this wicket is playing, England could only be put in trouble when they face the worst of the conditions. Regardless of the result in this game, England needs to get someone who hits the 140-Kph mark consistently and is accurate if they are willing to play in conditions like this. As of now, although Tongue is a quick bowler, he has struggled with his accuracy in the previous game and this one, especially where there is nothing happening in the air or wicket that pace who can bowl really quickly might be the point of difference. Without Bumrah, it will be a very creative job for Gill to pick wickets. There is not much point of difference or something special in that attack unless one of the bowlers has a day out.

As of this innings, Bashir has bowled quite well, but as the game goes on, it does become important that he starts picking wickets because the seamers have done quite a bit of work. Although the economic part of things is looking fine for Bashir, he needs to come up with plans to pick wickets. While the ongoing partnership is still a good one, India is not really in a situation where they can dictate the terms; however, if England do let this partnership keep going, they might start playing and attacking the spinner too, who might have some tired fingers bowling those many overs and England might not have the reaction plan by then.

One of the things England has failed to manage is to tie up the scoring rate. While the wicket is flat, when the likes of James Anderson and Stuart Broad were playing for England, there would be spells despite the ball not doing much, he would just tie one end up. As we update, Shubman Gill has got to his 150. He continued from where he left off last evening his driving has become even more exquisite today morning through the off-sides. also he was helped by England bowlers' half volleys, that is for a different discussion, but this is a true captain's innings from Gill today.

We have reached the water break, and this has been by far India's hour. There is no help to the bowlers whatsoever. Given how this hour has gone, India from 450 would be hoping to get to 550 at least. There was some seam moment for a while yesterday, but today nothing, this might be sign of what is to come next few days. From the Indian perspective, they would be hoping some rough gets formed on either ends and both the finger spinners, who are playing left-arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja and the off-spinner Washington Sundar, can come into play and exploit the conditions later in the game.

This has been a fabulous partnership between Jadeja and Gill. When Jadeja came into the crease yesterday, India had lost two quick wickets and were looking in a bit of trouble; however, both Jadeja and Gill immediately counterattacked and ensured England were pushed onto backfoot, and once that happened, they started to bat at a steadied tempo. Now this partnership has got to 150 and has taken India to 363 they still need 90 more from here to be ensured they have got some runs on board because the wicket is doing absolutely nothing the ball is going in straight lines and it has to be captains who have to show creativity to enforce wickets.

Carse has come into the attack, and his pace seemed a tad bit down compared to yesterday. Is it something to do with the niggle he seemed to be carrying or is it about just being rusty in the first over of the day has to be seen. Stokes has taken him out of the attack quickly today morning. While his being a bit erratic might not have been surprising but Woakes too today morning let the Indians away. It has been one of those 45-minute passages today where one team did come and is ready to go while the other team is yet to arrive and is a bit lacklustre.

India should make the most of this session. The conditions are looking terrific again. Not only do they have to bat big, they have to bat long. The Indians, one of these two, needs to stay till the end. Even the run scoring might go a tad bit slow it is important that the England players are kpet out in the open Woakes especially has bowled a lot his role in this Test match is not just being a bowler but also chip in at number eight and it is important that India made him bowl more and more also the gap between this game and the next game at Lord's is just three days hence it will take a toll on bowlers if India bats long in both their innings.

Ben Stokes has not bowled enough onto the stumps to make the batters play. It has been quite easy for both Jadeja and Gill to leave the ball. He has been throwing it quite wide, hoping for batters to flap, which might have happened with less experienced players, but both of these are quite experienced now to leave them. More than Stokes, the most important part for England is Woakes he did go for a few in his opening over of the day if he starts leaking runs this will get quite messy because 30 minutes into the contest nothing has suggested that this wicket has gone any bad from yesterday it seems to have got better.

Well, it is Stokes who has started with Woakes today morning. Although Stokes has bowled well yesterday compared to others, apart from Woakes, it is important he manages his workload. Josh Tongue, especially who had an ordinary day, might have given the new ball to showcase his skills with a bit of moisture in this initial phase; however, Stokes has been known for his out-of-the-box ideas, and it might be one. As per batting, both Shubman Gill and Ravindra Jadeja so far seem to be resuming from where they left off last evening, especially with the ease with which both are batting.

Ben Stokes has started the day here for England. It would be a surprise if it were not a change of end or something similar. Brydon Carse was struggling a bit with something yesterday Is it something have to do with that, or was it a deliberate tactic We have to wait and see. There might be some moisture that can be exploited in the initial hours of today, and Woakes will be fresh and he would want to make the most of this new ball. He did bowl quite splendidly yesterday, did Woakes and today with the ball relatively still new he would want to grab a few more wickets.

The conditions look once again excellent for cricket today. Both Shubman Gill and Ravindra Jadeja will hope to elongate this partnership to another 70-80 runs, which will take them closer to 450 runs. One thing that they should be wary of is the thought of collapse.

The keywords I would use are evolve and refine. At times initially it was quite extreme. My view is that you need to go through those extremes to realise where the balance is. Play with a fearless nature, have lots of fun and be entertaining, which is good for the game. But they are judged by results. I don’t think it’s complete (refinement), but I think it’s a long way further forward than it was a year or two ago. I think now what you see is that there are periods where they do absorb pressure rather than just keep being ultra-aggressive when under pressure. They are a very tough side to play against.

Chris Woakes becomes a major player. If everyone were fit, England would like to hit India with pace. They would go with Jofra Archer, Gus Atkinson, Mark Wood, and Olly Stone. Woakes will now be a key player with the new ball. Josh Tongue might start as well. Then you go into the Brydon Carse. Jamie Overton as an option. Then Stokes. So the whole pack is very good.

In the past three years, England have seen surprisingly little wrist-spin on home soil—just one over. Globally, however, they struggle against it, averaging only 30.50. Of the 51 wickets taken by wrist-spinners against England, Kuldeep Yadav has claimed a remarkable 19, boasting an average of 20.6 and a 36.0 strike rate.

"In the last match, if we had an extra spinner in the fourth innings, the game could have been better. There were some patches in the wicket that could have been exploited. Whenever Jaddu bhai [Jadeja] was bowling, we felt that chances were being created. We also felt that it is easier to contain the runs for the spinners than for the fast bowlers. Especially when the ball gets old. In these conditions, the ball is not swinging after 30-40 overs. The wickets are also good for batting. If the fast bowlers are not creating enough chances, I feel that a second spinner on these kind of wickets will at least control the runs for the fast bowlers." 

"I think everyone was very tired that week. It was a big week, we were in the field and bowled for another five days. I used the three days after that game to offer absolutely nothing to the world. I was a shadow of myself, but it goes to show how much a five-day test match takes out of you. I was pretty tired, but I'm all over that now and ready to go tomorrow."
