India vs Australia Highlights 2nd ODI Match Today: Mitchell Starc made full use of helpful conditions to take 5 for 53 as Australia bundled out India for a meagre 117 in 26 overs in the second ODI on Sunday. Starc’s ninth five-wicket haul in ODIs along with fine display from Sean Abbott (3/23) and Nathan Ellis (2/13) gave Indian batters no chance to settle down with the ball seaming and swinging prodigiously. Virat Kohli (31) and Axar Patel (29 not out) wee the only batters to cross the 20-run mark
Again, all eyes will be on KL Rahul’s bat who struggled to find form during the Border-Gavaskar series. He scored a patient unbeaten 75 in a low-scoring game at Wankhede where India defeated Australia by five wickets.
The fate of the 2nd ODI would also depend on how the weather turns out today at the Vizag where the weather forecast for the second ODI is of scattered thunderstorms at least in the first half.

Mitchell Starc: I have learnt the trade over the years. My rhythm has been good of late. I have been bowling a little fuller than other guys. I have a definite role in the team. My conversations are a little different compared to someone like a Cam Green. Both the decks have helped the seamers. There was movement in the air in Mumbai as well. My role is to attack the stumps and bring every form of dismissal into play.
Steve Smith: Was a quick one. Only 37 overs you don't see usually. Starc with the new ball put them under pressure. I didn't know how the wicket was going to play. There was no total in mind. We were just trying to execute our plans. We were on the right side. Just that kind of a day when the nicks went to hand. The way Head and Marsh played at the start. They just kept going and we are able to bounce back after the last game. Nice I held on to it. Fortunate I was able to hang on to it. Hardik is a wonderful player we know.
Rohit Sharma: If you lose a game, it is just disappointing, We didn't apply ourselves with the bat. Didn't put enough runs on the board. It wasn't a 117 wicket. We didn't apply ourself. We never allowed us to get the runs we wanted. Once we lost shubman in the first over, myself and Virat got 30-35 runs. But then I lost my wicket and we lost a couple of wickets post that. Starc is a quality bowler. He has been doing it for Australia with the new ball. He kept bowling to his strength. Swung the new ball and took the odd ball away. Kept the batters guessing. Marsh has to be one of the top players going around when it comes to power hitting. He backs himself to do that every now and then. Definitely in top 3 and 4 when it comes to power hitting.
Travis Head: Nice to contribute, really good to get a partnership going. We were a bit settled today and took our time. Last game, I went hard early to push the envelope. It's nice to have the big fellow (Marsh) at the other end when he hits them into the top-tier. We were hoping that one of us gets away. It's very rare that both of us go at the same time. Throughout my experience opening the batting, if one guy is going, you try to support that. Today it was a short total, we both felt like going. We played really calculated. It was a nice partnership, very enjoyable.
Mitchell Marsh: It was a bit of fun. Always nice to get a good start when you’re chasing a small total like that. I was hoping Head would get off to a flier and I could play it slow. To be honest, I’ve been enjoying playing swing and batting up the order. (On Starc) He’s been brilliant, it is horrible standing at slip when he bowls because it flies at about 80 miles an hour off the edge. But it is great to see him bowl like this, we now have a rare chance to win an away series in India.
India have lost this match with 234 balls to spare, the most ever in their men's ODI history. Previous worst was 212 balls remaining against New Zealand, Jan 2019.
Australia has hammered India. They absolutely thrashed the bowling in the run chase. Openers Mitchell Marsh and Travis Head both scored their half-centuries in no time. On a wicket where Indian batters struggled to cope with the seam moment of the Australian pacers, the Aussie openers took the Indian seam bowlers Mohammed Shami and Mohammed Siraj apart. Rohit Sharma went to his spinners Axar Patel and Kuldeep Yadav but there was no turn on offer. It has been a poor day for the Indians they were never in the game. Australia squares the series now. Going to Chepauk for the final game the series is set up nicely for another absorbing game of cricket. For now, that's it, folks.
Axar Patel is brought into the attack. No turn-on offer for the spinner but he tried to keep things tight. He flighted one outside the off-stump to see if he might get any turn but Marsh trashed him to a boundary through covers. There seems to be an acceptance in the body language of the Indians that this game is gone. Australian openers are batting like they are in the nets. Australia 78/0
Mitchell Marsh seems to enjoy batting on this surface. He is hitting the ball brutally. The ball is flying to all parts of the ground. It seems like he is batting completely on a different surface here. The sound the bat is making when Marsh is hitting them. You got to feel sorry for the bowler. This is just clean striking by the right-hander. This is a statement by the Aussies that they are no pushovers. Australia 53/0
Mohammed Shami is giving his everything here. He is bowling bouncer showing aggression. however, the surface has absolutely nothing in it. Mitchell Marsh and Travis Head are attacking the bowling trying to disturb the line and length of the bowlers. So far they have been successful. India is playing an extra spin option it will be interesting to see if they will need to use at least one of them. Australia 29/0
The surface seems to be eased out a bit here. Travis Head and Mitchell Marsh are looking good with the bat. They are playing a few attacking shots here. The wickets seem to be alright to bat. It was all Starc's brilliance that did the damage. India has misread the surface completely. They replaced Shardul Thakur with Axar Patel on a surface that is assisting the seam bowlers. It has been a day to forget for India so far. Australia 13/0
It has been a sorry batting card for India. No batter has gone into the 40s every batter struggled on the surface that was offering a bit of the seam moment. Starc has been sensational with the ball with his five-wicket haul. Kohli looked good for the brief period he stayed however, Ellis trapped him in front of the wickets. This should be an easy-run chase for Australia. India needs to pull a rabbit out of the hat to make a game out of it.

There was a bit in it with the ball today. The guys set the tone at the top - Starc and Green. Pretty important that we finished off the innings and kept looking to take wickets. We saw a clinic from Mitch today as we've seen before in the past. The conditions since we've arrived here in Vizag, there's been a lot of rain and there's a bit of humidity around. We did see a little bit of swing early and a little bit of seam. It was nice for all of us to contribute and get the ball in the right areas. We know how good the Indian team is right through down the order, so very good performance. (On using the oddd bouncer) When the wicket is nipping like that, the batter is obviously going to set up for balls attacking the stumps, so just kept their footwork guessing there. Definitely (chaseable), you don't have a par score until both teams bat on it, but we'll certainly go out there and look to put a bit of pressure on their bowlers. We saw how skilled they were last game and how skilled they've been for a long time. It's going to be a good contest up first against the new ball
India has been bowled out cheaply here in the 2nd ODI. It is hard to recall when India batted this badly in home conditions. Australia has been sensational with the ball. Steve Smith has been terrific with his captaincy and making the bowling changes at the right time. Starc looked in top form and bowled one of the best spells of his career picking up his ninth five-wicket haul. India will try and give it they're all however, it is difficult to say if it will make any difference given the batting performance. Seems like it will be 1-1. But we have to wait and see.
Kuldeep Yadav and Mohammed Shami go back to the pavilion. Axar Patel is the lone batter left. He might be looking to up the ante and score some quick runs here. This has been a disappointing performance by the Indians. The crowd who have come in with lot of hope to see their stars perform have been left a bit disappointed. India 103/9
It has gone a bit dark here all of a sudden. The lights have been turned on. Kuldeep Yadav and Axar Patel will be looking to bat as long as possible. Axar is looking solid with his defence and has been in terrific form. Kuldeep Yadav on the other hand is a handy batter as well. He will try and hang around Axar as long as possible. Australia, on the other hand, will be looking to finish this innings as quickly as possible. India 99/7.
Nathan Ellis picks up Ravindra Jadeja. The left-hander pokes one outside the off stump. The ball bounces a bit off the surface and nicely carries through to Alex Carey. He takes a simple catch to put further misery on the Indians. There is stunned silence here in the stadium. India is in all sorts of trouble. This is an excellent come back by the Aussies. India 91/7.
Axar Patel and Ravindra Jadeja have arguably been the most in-form batters for India in the last couple of months. The onus is on these two to rotate strike build a partnership and take it from there. However, Australia has a tight grip on this game at the moment. Smith has brought Adam Zampa into the attack will be interesting to see if he can get any turn of the surface. India 86/6.
Australian pace continues to trouble the Indian batters. The ball has been moving and the Australian pacers have made use of the conditions nicely. Starc has been absolutely sensational. Nathan Ellis seems to be a decent bowler to back up Starc here for the time being. Rohit Sharma felt the wicket might assist spinners so far there have been no signs of it. India 82/6.
Nathan Ellis given the ball for the first time in the match and strikes on his second delivery. Virat Kohli trapped lbw playing across the line. India, 71/6.
A third successive over without a boundary. India won't mind that at this stage unless they lose a wicket here. Anything above 250 would be a utopia from losing five wickets at 49. Three off the over. 70/5 after 15 overs.
"Looks a bit like the WACA pitch, with cracks all around it," says Mitchell Johnson on-air. Equal measures of low and high bounce deliveries, keeping the batters constantly second guessing the nature of the wicket. The last two deliveries from Abbott to Jadeja were contrasting in their nature as well. Almost similar length, one defended low and the other thuds into the southpaw's pad after picking up off the surface. 67/5, India after 14 overs.
Starc finally taken off from the 'wicket taking end'. Cameron Green back for a second spell, was good in his attempt of stopping the flow of runs in the first. Does the same here, just the one comes from that 13th over. 65/5, India.
The ball is doing a lot here. Length ball outside off, and Jadeja opens the face of his bat but it takes an outside edge and goes past Steve Smith at first slip for four. Another edge induced from around the wicket. Thick and goes past Smith again, who stretches to his full but is unable to get his hands on the ball. If Steve Smith couldn't, you know it wasn't really. 64/5 after 12.
A little side note. Abbott slides one down the leg, one that whiskers past Jadeja and is deemed a wide by the on field umpire. On goes Sanjay Manjrekar in the comm box, "In WPL we have the option of reviewing the wide. Can have it in the IPL as well." What giant strides this league has taken in world cricket, becoming a trendsetter in the true sense of the word.
The Steve Smith captaincy stock has been rising onwards and upwards as we have progressed on this Australia tour of India. Giving Starc the extra over outside of powerplay indicative of the 'why' of it. Australia have taken the attack to the Indian batters. Three off the latest, 54/5 after 11.
What a collapse this has been. Australia all over this contest as of now, even though India have Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja in the middle with Axar Patel yet to come. Mitchell Starc has been at his swinging best with four scalps up front in the new ball spell. And then, that worldly from Steve Smith in the slips. I've got back pain just looking at that stretch. Fifty up for India, 51/5 after 10 overs.
Steve Smith with a BLINDER at first slip. Full stretch. One handed. Hardik Pandya departs. Sean Abbott with the wicket. India five down in the powerplay. 49/5.
Screengrab: Hotstar
Mitchell Starc over the wicket to the right hander, another one that comes in after pitching and KL Rahul has missed the line there. LBW shout and the umpire raises his finger. Goes upstairs but it is hitting the middle of middle and leg. Review wasted and Starc is breathing fire at the moment. Rahul goes for 9, India 48/4.
Sean Abbott replaces Cameron Green from the other end. Had been supremely economical in his first two spells in the last game. Starts off with giving away five off his first. 47/3 after eight.
Down the leg from Mitchell Starc and KL Rahul flicks it behind, just past of a wide stretched Alex Carey down long leg for four. Coming over the wicket to both right handers, Starc seems to have smelled blood. Kohli with two leaves on the outside off stump deliveries. 42/3 after seven overs.
Just like they were in Mumbai, Australia have been on the front foot in the powerplay in Vizag as well. The run rate had spiked up in the initial three overs but has been put to normal now. Two off that Cameron Green over. 34/3 after six.

The left armer curse strikes again for the Indian captain. Edged and caught at first slip by Steve Smith, a fine catch that by the Australian captain.
On the next ball, he traps Suryakumar Yadav lbw on his knees and Starc's on a hattrick for the second game in a row. Round the wicket to KL Rahul, who safely nudges it aside off his pads. A double wicket maiden. India, 32/3 after five overs.
Most miserly over this from Australia so far. Just the four runs come from it. Nevertheless, this has been a quick start for the hosts. India, 32/1 after four.
Kohli takes on Starc, a lovely straight drive on the ground for four. Good bit of battle brewing this as the left armer gets a couple to whiz past Kohli, who shows his appreciation on the penultimate delivery. The last one is flicked on the on for four past deep mid wicket. 10 from the over, 29/1 after three.
Cameron Green from the other end and that's now the second time in two overs today that Rohit Sharma has nicely clipped away a pad-lined delivery, full length of course, square of the wicket on the on side for four. This one to square leg. Virat Kohli bags his first boundary as well. Just opens the face of the bat to squeeze it square of the point for four. 19/1, India.
He was the destructor in chief for Australia with the new ball in the first ODI, here he is again. Virat Kohli, Suryakumar Yadav and Shubman Gill all fell to him. Rohit Sharma has had his own problems to deal with against left arm pace. Off he goes and off we go in this second ODI.
Starts off with a wide on the off. A couple of them BUT SHUBMAN GILL HAS HELPED THE BALL STRAIGHT TO THE FIELDER AT POINT. AUSTRALIA HAVE THEIR FIRST WICKET!
Rohit Sharma ends the over with clip down backward square leg for four. 8/1, India.
The rain clouds have disappeared. With bright blue skies atop, Indian openers Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill walk into the middle at Vizag. The duo has been key in India's ODI strategy so far, having gotten the side off to quick start on multiple occasion in the bilaterals against Sri Lanka and New Zealand. Australia will look to remove these two early, if they are to make a comeback in the three match series. Action awaits.
Pitch has been under the covers for a long time, we got to bat well and see where we are. Every game you play for India is a pressure game, so you got to stay calm and make the right decision. We have tried to remain calm in the last few ODI series we have played. Two changes. Ishan misses out, I am back for him, Shardul misses out and Axar is in. If we win the toss, I thought we could do something with three spinners if we bowl first. I think it will still turn in the second innings. And three spinners is something we might go with in the World Cup, so we want to try.
We will have a bowl. Different surface, been under covers for a while, might do something. Just a partnership through the middle would have helped us. It's a good learning for us playing on these surfaces. Ellis comes in for Maxwell who has pulled up a bit sore and Carey is back for Inglis.
India (Playing XI): Rohit Sharma(c), Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Suryakumar Yadav, KL Rahul(w), Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, Mohammed Siraj, Mohammed Shami
Australia (Playing XI): Travis Head, Mitchell Marsh, Steven Smith(c), Marnus Labuschagne, Alex Carey(w), Cameron Green, Marcus Stoinis, Sean Abbott, Nathan Ellis, Mitchell Starc, Adam Zampa
An hour ago, it was drizzling and the whole ground was undercover. It's nice and bright now. Sunny and the covers are off. Black soil here, lots of cracks as well. It is so firm and I don't think the cracks will open up or will have a big effect on the game. It's been under covers for a couple of days, so there'll be some moisture. Batting might be a little bit difficult initially but it'll only keep getting better. Still a very good batting pitch. Teams prefer chasing, here more so because it's been under covers.
It was fun batting with Jadeja. The minute the left-hander walked in, I got a few loose balls . That happens to the best of bowlers. Jaddu batted beautifully and he runs hard between the wickets. He is in great form and he knows what to do in those situations.
We're experimenting with a few different combinations, playing eight batters... We understand that if we're going to play eight batters, we still need to play a certain way up until the 35th over or whatever it might be, and then when the time comes we can assert some authority on that with our back-end power hitters.
Australia predicted XI: Travis Head, Mitchell Marsh, Steven Smith (c), Marnus Labuschagne, Josh Inglis (wk), Glenn Maxwell, Cameron Green, Marcus Stoinis, Sean Abbott, Mitchell Starc, Adam Zampa

India Squad: Rohit Sharma(c), Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Suryakumar Yadav, KL Rahul(w), Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja, Shardul Thakur, Kuldeep Yadav, Mohammed Siraj, Mohammed Shami, Ishan Kishan, Washington Sundar, Yuzvendra Chahal, Axar Patel, Umran Malik, Jaydev Unadkat
The clouds seem to be clearing in Vizag for letting the game go ahead. It seems like a good sunny day in the city. Fans might be able to witness a full game in the stadium looking at the weather forecast. India will be hoping to win the series today and bag another bilateral series. However, Australia will resist it much as possible. The fact the dew may come into place in the second innings the team winning the toss might choose to bat first.
KL Rahul has come under a lot of scrutinies for his performances in T20Is and Tests. However, his batting in ODIs has been sublime. He has been a rock in the middle order in the side and his wicket-keeping has been second to none. With his impressive knock in Mumbai in the first ODI to take home India. He might be the solidity and experience India needs in the middle after what happened in the 2019 World Cup semifinal when the team's middle order capitulated under the pressure. Read more about KL Rahul's case for being in the World Cup playing XI by our senior writer Venkata Krishna B.
Both Mohammed Shami and Mohammed Siraj have been in top form in the home season. The former has been the go-to bowler for Rohit Sharma in the different stages of the game whilst the latter has been the new ball chief in the absence of Jasprit Bumrah. The have bowled a fiery spell in the first ODI in Mumbai. However, Shami had a word of caution to Siraj. Read more about the advice Shami gave his fellow pacemen.
Rohit Sharma will be back at the top of the order come to the 2nd ODI. Ishan Kishan, who replaced the right-hander in the first ODI, failed to leave a mark with the bat in a short inning of 3.
Shardul Thakur, despite being an all-rounder, did not have much of an impact in the first game. He bowled two overs and did not get to bat. The Mumbai surface assisted seamers, as was evident with the three-wicket hauls of Mohammed Shami, Mohammed Siraj and Mitchell Starc for Australia. However, Vizag being traditionally a flat wicket, India will be looking to have an X-factor in the middle overs with someone of Umran Malik’s calibre.

With India winning the first game all the eyes are now set on the 2nd ODI in Vizag for India to seal the series. KL Rahul and Ravindra Jadeja with their sensible knocks saved the blushes of the Indian top order of Friday. However, the likes of Virat Kohli, Shubman Gill and Suryakumar Yadav will be looking to menace on a Vizag track which has been traditionally excellent for batting in the past. Rohit Sharma returns back to the side as leader and opener which will be the icing on the cake for the side. Australia on the other hand might be rethinking their combination. They will feel they went with a batter too many in the first game. When Starc was able to hoop the ball around corners with his swing there was no one to support him. Smith deployed Marcus Stoinis as his support with the new ball. That might be something to ponder upon for the Aussies.
