While the hosts’ struggles could be attributed to administrative and monetary constraints, allied to a shortage of suitably talented and driven players, India has been consistently underwhelming at big-ticket events for a decade now despite the financial might and administrative resources at the BCCI’s disposal, and the world’s richest talent pool in the game, which regularly keeps throwing up prodigies. Yashasvi Jaiswal goes big on debut; Rohit Sharma hits ton as India tighten grip on first Test vs West Indies
The Mumbai school of batting preaches filling one’s boots when the opportunity presents itself, not throwing one’s wicket away when the bowling ceases to present a stiff challenge.
That’s what Yashasvi Jaiswal and Rohit Sharma did on Day 2 of the first Test against the West Indies in Dominica. The former, especially, showed maturity beyond his 21 years of age to score a hundred on Test debut and putting up a double-century opening stand with his captain, a fellow Mumbaikar himself, who too helped himself to a ton.
The leap in the air, both arms aloft and the beaming smile from Jaiswal after nudging the ball into the leg-side for his 100th run made all the hardships and sacrifices in his formative years worthwhile.(read more)
"Spoke to Dravid sir a lot, and he gave me confidence. I want to thank the selectors and Rohit bhai for showing faith and allowing me to express myself. (On playing debut Test for India) A special moment. I used to think about playing for my country when I was young. Emotional moment for me but this is just the start," says Jaiswal at the presentation ceremony.
Ashwin gets Warrican out LBW as he tries to go down on a knee and reverse-sweep the Indian spinner. The West Indian appeals, but it's out after a review.
India have won this Test by an innings and 141 runs.
R Ashwin is a man who has already picked up 11 wickets in this match. Warrican is the 11th batter for West Indies.
None of that seems to matter to Warrican, who's taking the attack to the Indians. There's cheek, and then there's brazen audacity! That's where Warrican is playing at the moment as he tries to reverse-sweep Ashwin for the second time in one over.
And the ball races to the boundary. Warrican has scored 18 off nine balls!
We'll have eight more overs in the day as we chase a result. Umpires agree to extend for an additional half an hour.
Warrican is taking the attack to the Indians. He's batting on 12 from seven balls. He's hit two boundaries already.
Ashwin bamboozles Kemar Roach, who is bowled for zero. West Indies trail by 163 runs with just one wicket in hand.
R Ashwin picks up Cornwall, who edges the ball onto his pads. The ball loops in the air and falls into the palms of Shubman Gill. This is the 10th wicket of 1st Test for Ashwin as West Indies are reduced to 108/8.
Jason Holder edges the ball and it goes in direction of Virat Kohli in second slip. It doesn't carry though and the Indian was too upright in the field.
West Indies are 108/7 with thier deficit still 163 runs.
Ashwin has his fourth wicket. Alzarri Joseph tries to go for a big one, but he top edges it and finds Shubman Gill on deep midwicket boundary. West Indies down to 100/7. Still behind by 171 runs.
With the match starting to slip from their grasp, Alzarri Joseph and Jason Holder are starting to clobber the spinners. First Joseph hits Ashwin for a six over mid off. Then, two overs later, Holder hits Ashwin for a six over wide long on.
And the West Indies get to 100 runs in the second innings.
Ashwin gets the West Indian half-centurion from the first innings. And who else but Jaiswal to take the catch. Remember, he had dropped Athanaze on 1 in the second innings.
Ashwin has his third wicket. West Indies are 78/6. India lead by 193 runs.
Athanaze is not playing like a man who's on his debut. He's scored 23 so far from 37 balls, with four boundaries.
Together with Holder, he's stabilise West Indies, who seemed to be freefall. The hosts have managed to cut India's lead to 200 runs as we take a drinks break.
Siraj beats Joshua Da Silva's bat to get him dismissed LBW.
The keeper-batter scored just 13. West Indies reeling at 58/5, still trailing by 213 runs.
Jason Holder coming in.
After 24 overs of spin, India skipper Rohit Sharma brings in a pacer.
Two big appeals in that Jadeja over. Both given not out by umpire. The first one for LBW was not reviewed bu Rohit Sharma. The second one, for an edge, was reviewed. But replays show there's no edge.
Windies have one review left, India have two remaining after losing that one.
Yashasvi Jaiswal drops it. Athanaze, the only batter to put up a decent score for the Windies in the first innings, gets a second chance while batting at one run. The batter was trying to defend a ball from Ashwin when it took a heavy edge and flew to short leg. Jaiswal had four touches of the ball before dropping it. This could be costly. On the next ball, Athanaze slaps a ball away to the boundary.
Hosts lose second wicket in five balls.
This time it's Jadeja who traps Reifer LBW. Reifer also decides to review.
Ball's pitching in line, impact in line. Decision stays. Another wicket and review lost.
West Indies down to 32/4. India enjoy lead of 239.
West Indies are reduced to 32/3. Ashwin tricks Blackwood into getting out LBW. He reviews, but the third umpire agrees with the decison of the on-field umpire. West Indies lose a review as well!
West Indies trail by 239 runs.
West Indies are trailing by 244 runs. Reifer and Blackwood in the middle with the scoreboard reading 27/2.
Ashwin and Jadeja sharing 15 overs out of 19 so far. They've also taken one wicket apiece.
And it falls just short of the man in the slips.
Jadeja manages to get an edge off Blackwood. The ball falls just short of second slip. Jadeja thought it was out. He was a few feet away from his second wicket in the second innings.
Once again, Ashwin manages to get the wicket of West Indies skipper Kraigg Brathwaite. The West Indies batter manages to get an edge which flies to Rahane in the slips. He makes no mistake. Brathwaite's 47-ball stay in the middle comes to an end. He's just managed to score seven runs.
West Indies are 22/2
Chanderpaul departs for seven runs! It's Ravindra Jadeja who hands India the breakthrough with an LBW. West Indies reduced to 8/1.
Chanderpaul instantly asks for a review. Third umpire gives it out as the ball is pitched in line, impact in line.
Reifer is next man in.
West Indies trail by 263 runs.

Brilliant pace from Jadeja. He loves bowling the quicker deliveries. And this pitch is perfectly suited for someone like him. He ends his over with a ball that flies past the keeper and is actually caught by Ajinkya Rahane in first slip. These are good signs for the Indians.
West Indies are 7/0 after 8 overs.
Ashwin invites Chanderpaul to drive, and the left-hander bites, driving the spinner through the covers from a boundary.
At the other end, skipepr Brathwaite has faced 27 balls and is yet to get off the mark.
R Ashwin bowls a maiden, followed by Jadeja also bowling a maiden. The Indians are properly stifling the Windies batters with an attacking field. Two slips and a silly point in place. And Pant and Kohli seem to be in a contest about who can be the chirpiest.
Five overs in, and we have Ravindra Jadeja from one end and Ravichandran Ashwin from the other.
Thsi is going to be a proper test of the abilities of Brathwaite and Chanderpaul.
In the change of overs, camera catches a slightly irritated Rohit Sharma gesticulating at Ishan Kishan, reminding him they're looking ot declare. Kishan had taken 17 balls, but was not off the mark yet. As soon as he scored his first run, on the 20th ball, Rohit Sharma declares the innings with India at 421/5. They have a lead of 271 runs. A mountain of runs standing in front of the Windies.
18 balls in, Ishan Kishan still to score. It's been another slow, sluggish day of Test cricket.
India are 419/5, with their lead stretching to 269 runs.
Virat Kohli tried to turn a ball from Cornwall to the legside, but Alick Athanaze is there to catch it. Kohli's innings ends at 76 (off 182 balls). How much did Wes tIndies miss Cornwall yesterday!
India are 405/5 with Ishan Kishan joining Ravindra Jadeja in the middle.
Another reprieve for Virat Kohli. He edged a ball from Kemar Roach in the first over of the second session on day 3. Keeper Da Silva dives full stretch and ends up what seemed to be flying to Cornwall.
Kohli gets a second opportunity. He was also dropped on Brathwaite on 40 earleir in the day.
Kemar Roach handed the ball. Kohli takes strike. Will India step up the scorign rate in this session, or continue to grind out runs slowly?
India extend their lead to 250 runs at the end of the first session of Day 3. India are 400/4 with Kohli batting on 72 and Jadeja on 21.
Kohli was dropped by Brathwaite on 40. How costly will that be? We'll find out.
Here's what happened in that session: 29 overs, 88 runs, two wickets (including Yashasvi Jaiswal)
Bit of comedy from Virat Kohli. He flicks a ball from Athanaze to the leg-side boundary. As the ball trickles to the boundary, Kohli spreads his arms and looks heaven-wards as if thanking the Almighty for a boundary. It's a reiteration that things have been scratchy this innings for Kohli, despite which he has managed to score a half century.
India are 378/4
Alize Athanaze is back in the attack. Jadeja welcomes him by sending the first ball from the West Indian over the rope for a six. Athanaze responds by beating the left-hander's outside edge o nthe next ball.
Seven runs come off that over.
IND are 371/4, and their lead is now at 221 runs.
Warrican in to bowl the next over and with that single Virat Kohli gets to his 50. Jadeja navigates the remaining 4 ball s for no runs. IND 357/4, lead by 207 runs
Aaaand that's another wicket gone. Roach strikes as Rahane's stroke goes straight to Blackwood in the covers. Finally, things going West Indies' way. IND 356/4, lead by 206 runs
Warrican to bowl this one and Kohli takes a single to go to 49. Rahane takes a single off the 3rd and Kohli is back on strike. Defends the last two deliveries. IND 356/3, lead by 206 runs
Joseph continues and Rahane with two defences off the first two deliveries. Follows that up with another. Places the fourth towards deep square for a single. Ufff, another close call from Kohli. It was nearly chopped on the stumps but he survives. Takes a single to retain strike. IND 354/3, lead by 204 runs.
Warrican will bowl now as Windies have a spring in their steps now. Kohli defends the first delivery and sneaks a single off the next. Ajinkya Rahane will face his first ball of the series. And he also starts with a defence. Beautiful ball as it spun away from the batter and just evades the outside edge. Rahane with a single off the fifth and he's got on the board. There's another shout for a catch out but the umpire says no. And he was right. It hits the shoulder of the keeper and staright to Cornwall. IND 352/3, lead by 202 runs.
Joseph to continue and Jaiswal with a solid defensive stroke to start. Back to back defences next. Tries a run next but Kohli sends Jaiswal back. There's a noise next and Jaiswal has nicked it behind!!! That's the end of a scintillating innings IND 350/3, lead by 200 runs.
Warrican is hit for a straight six by Jaiswal to start this over. Perhaps he is shifting gears. Huge shout for an LBW as the umpire says no. No reviews left. The replays showed that it had missed the stumps. A direct hit next but the batter was most probably in. Yes, replays confirm that Kohli was safely home. IND 350/2, lead by 200 runs
Alzarri Joseph continues and Jaiswal's drive is to a fielder. The next one is sliced for a four as the 100-run partnership comes up between these two. Defends the next two deliveries before taking a single. IND 341/2, lead by 191 runs
Warrican to continue and Kohli with the forward defence to start this one. The next two deliveries are carbon copies of each other as Kohli defends again. Same for the next two balls and ends with another forward defence. Maiden over. IND 336/2, lead by 186 runs
Alzarri Joseph wil replace Holder. Short ball to start and Jaiswal rotates strike with a single. The 2nd ball is played off his leg side, fine enough for a four behind. Only his second boundary of the innings. Good defence off the next one while navigating the 4th. Oh!! a run out chance and Chanderpaul could not hit the target. IND 336/2, lead by 186 runs
Warrican again and Jaiswal looks to take him on but gets the bottomedge of the bat. Takes the single off the 3rd delivery. Kohli defends the 4th and drives the 5th but gets no run. IND 330/2, lead by 180 runs
Holder conrinues and has banged the first balol short and Jaiswal leaves it as it whooshes past his chest. A little wider next and Jaiswal drives for a single. The 3rd and the fourth are dots before Kohli pulls the fifth but does not get his timing right. Just a single. A pull from Jaiswal to retain strike for the next over. IND 329/2, lead by 179 runs
Warrican to Jaiswal and he drives at long on for a single. Kohli returns the favour with 2 runs. And ohhhh!!! The captain drops Kohli!!! Brathwaite should have taken that. He even had both hands on it. Frustration from the bowler. IND 326/2, lead by 176 runs
Holder to Jiaswal and the youngster takes a single off the second ball. Kohli can't get off the mark just yet as the next 3 balls yield 0. Can he finish with a flourish? Nope. Another defence. IND 323/2, lead by 173 runs
Warrican back and immediattely appeals for an LBW but umpire unmoved. They can't do anything about it as West Indies have burned all their reviews. Jaiswal takes a single as Kohli is content to defend the remaining deliveries. IND 322/2, lead by 172 runs
Holder continues and Jaiswal frees his arm for a stroke but decides against taking a run. The second delivery is pushed down the ground for a boundary. Exquisite timing. Takes a single off the fifth abll that's 150 for him. IND 321/2, lead by 171 runs
Warrican will partner Holder and he starts with a straight delivery which Jaiswal drives to take a single. Kohli on strike and navigates the next 3 balls. The fifth is a front footed defence and the last one yields the same. IND 316/2, lead by 166 runs
Here we go!! Jason Holder with the ball and Jaiswal faces him. The first two deliveries are left alone by the youngster. The last 3 deliveries yield 3 runs. IND 315/2, lead by 165 runs
"Spinners have taken 10 out of 12. There's a lot of rough and cracks are starting to develop. It was hard for the batters. There's going to be more purchase for the spinners. There's some green grass as well that's formed due to the condensation under the covers so there might be something in it for the faster bowlers as well. Going to be another tough day in the field for the West Indian bowlers," say Samuel Badree and Shakira Selman.
News from the middle as Cornwall has been warming up but he might not be allowed to bowl till after the Lunch Break. That's a relief for the Windies and it might pose a bit of a problem for India.
