IND vs ENG 2nd Test Day 3 Highlights: India 64/1 at Stumps on Day 3, lead England by 244 runs

Well we are approaching that time of the day when the batters decide to just lay down anchor. There is a bit of rain around and so it will be a surprise if we see any more today than the upcoming 13th over of the innings which will be bowled by Brydon Carse. 

Karun Nair is on seven off 13, KL Rahul 27 off 37. 

India 63/1 in 12 overs

The controversy isn't really related to the nature of the dismissal but rather about whether Jaiswal was too late to go for the review. Big appeal off the fourth ball and the umpire raises his finger. Jaiswal confers with Rahul for quite a while before making the DRS signal. Stokes goes up to the umpire pointing to the clock, saying that Jaiswal has run out of time to ask for DRS. Umpire confers with the third umpire about it and says there will be a review, Jaiswal hadn't run out of time. Stokes is not too happy about it and well, he probably would've fuming some more had that call been over turned. Length ball outside off, swinging in to hit Jaiswal's front pad. Three reds and India lose a review.

Jaiswal with back to back fours off the first two balls from Carse in that over and then another off the fourth. The batters run singles off the last two balls and this is some start from Jaiswal and Rahul. Jaiswal on 22 off 18, Rahul on 10 off 18.

Right, here we go for the Indian second innings where they effectively start on a score of 180/0. Chris Woakes to bowl the first over, Yashasvi Jaiswal facing up. 

Only five England players managed to score any runs in this innings and even then, they finish with a score of 407. This has to be one of the more remarkable scorecards to have been coughed up by Test cricket. Siraj finishes with figures of 6/70, an incredible economy of 3.58, Deep on 4/88 with an economy of 4.40. For all that had been said about how much India will struggle with Bumrah, these two have shown in this innings at least that this team can compete even without their magician of a spearhead. 

India will start their second innings with a lead of 180. Jamie Smith stranded at the other end, 13 runs away from what would've been a record double century. He has already broken the record for the highest score ever by an England wicketkeeper. 

Siraj had served up a brute first up to Bashir short one that jumped up and hit the batter on the side of the helmet. It was so sickening a blow that even Siraj went up to check if the batter was ok. Bashir needed some treatment, during which time the umpires called for a drinks break. Once play resumed, Siraj bowled the third ball on a length outside off, Bashir shouldered arms and it nipped right back in to take the top of off. 

Full and straight and Tongue is a goner! He is the fifth duck of this innings and the fifth man to fall to Siraj. Tongue reviews it, more out of hope than anything else one would imagine. It was full and no bat, ball-tracking shows that middle and leg stump would've been shattered. Siraj raises the ball to all parts of the ground once the third umpire's decision is announced. 

Big shout for LBW and the umpire turns it down. But Pant reviews it, with Gill being off the field, and well the Indian vice-captain is succesfull. Siraj is as pumped as ever after that decision is shown on the field. Gill ran on to the field around that time and gives Pant and Siraj a couple of bear hugs. 

Fifth ball of the 88th over, sent in on a length, Carse defends but it seams into his pads. The umpire shakes his head and Pant made the DRS signal. The only question was whether there was any bat involved. There wasn't and ball-tracking shows that Carse was gone for all money. England going through the kind of collapse India suffered in the second innings at Headingley.

Karun Nair takes the catch, and Chris Woakes falls. Deep pitches up his fifth ball in 87th over, inviting Woakes to drive and the batter takes the bait. It moves away just that slight bit, just grazes the outside edge and goes to Nair, who stays low to take another good slip catch.

BOWLED HIM! And that ends an incredible innings and an even more incredible partnership! The new ball has done the trick. Brilliant delivery from Deep, pitched on a length and seaming in, bursting through Brook's gates and it takes the off stump. That wouldn't have done him like this if this was still the softer old ball. 

An astonishing partnership thus ends on 303 off 368 balls

A wave of applause around the ground as Smith and Brook run two off the fourth ball of the 82nd over by Siraj. That's 300 runs in 364 balls for this partnership. Smith takes a single off the last ball to take the stand to 301 in 366 balls. He is on 169 off 188, Brook on 158 off 233 balls.

And Harry Brook needs some running repairs after the first over with it, which was bowled by Akash Deep. 

He overstepped for the second ball and then Brook tucked it away to fine leg to run a single. Big appeal for LBW off the fourth ball, the umpire shakes his head and Gill chooses not to review. Another single off the fifth  ball. Brook on 158 off 233 at the end of that over, Smith on 162 off 182. 

England 379/5 in 81 overs

A single off the second ball of the 79th by Jadeja does the job. He has got there in 221 balls. Jamie Smith is at the other end on 159 off 176 balls. India are just under two overs away from the new ball, although at this point it could be argued that both sides stand to gain if they do take it. 

Washington Sundar to bowl the first over of the session, his 12th of the innings. Harry Brook is on strike, he is on 140 off 209 balls, Jamie Smith at the other end on 157 off 169. Their partnership - 271 in 323 balls. 

Well, that's the session done. England has completely dominated it. India looked rattled and tried a few things, hoping a wicket would come from somewhere, which did not. The bowling has been ordinary, and so have been the field placements. There have been tight spells bowled, though, but in between, England have had quite frequently those release overs which let off pressure. In the next session, India has to do something the rate at which this partnership is going, they might get very close to India if the wicket is not taken. Since spinners have come in with this old ball, they have bowled well. They are bowling it a lot slower and giving the ball a lot more air. This is nice they are building a few quiet overs and suck out some momentum out of the innings. While both Smith and Brook are quite talented, their game against spin is yet to be tested, and these two are quite wily spinners and can beat the batters both inside and outside edges The way this last 15 minutes have gone, we might have a wicket around the corner soon. As per England, they just might be thinking to survive this spell till Tea.

One thing since the break has been quite evident is Gill using his bowlers in shorter and sharper bursts. While it does work well with seamers with spinners where the problem arises. Jadeja is someone who tends to take a bit of time to get into his rhythm with a new ball around the corner Once again the spell here might not be as long. As compared to Gill, Stokes in the first innings ensured that Shoaib Bashir had a long spell and had the luxury to plan the dismissals of the batters, and that is what India have lacked that planning in usage of spinners it has been more about getting through the overs than looking to pick wickets.

Ravindra Jadeja has finally come into the attack. He did have a poor game when with the ball in Leeds, which might be considered one off but today, yet again, he did not start well. He is getting quite a bit of help on this surface, but the tendency of Jadeja to bowl quicker through the air has let England batters play well and get away with it. This is where someone like Kuldeep Yadav had been absolutely handy slowing it bowling with guile and flight and letting the English batters make the decision to go on front foot or backfoot as they have the tendency to pick the ball of length rather than of hand.

Jamie Smith has got to his 150 here. He has gone a bit slowly once he has crossed his 100, but he still is scoring above 100 One of the bowlers who took the most pasting against him was Prasidh Krishna, who got peppered all over the boundaries. Also India have played into his hands by trying to bowl him short instead of trying other tactics. Since the break, they have started to bowl fuller his scoring tempo has come down a bit, but he is scoring at a healthy rate. This is the phase in the game where India's selections in this game come to question with the all-rounders rather than going with specialists. 

India might have to turn to Jadeja soon here. The left-arm spinner has been quite inconsistent with the ball, but he still is India's prime spinner The pace at which runs are being scored here, having Jadeja bow,l might give some control to the skipper, Shubman Gill. Also, the ball as old as it is it might start turning a bit it just has to be bowled in the right areas. Also India needs to have a spell where they don't concede many runs, preferably bowl a couple of maidens. When England was at 84/5, India were looking in top but as of now the lack of experience in the bowling attack is coming into the front.

This has not been as frantic as the morning session, but both English batters are continuing on from where they left off. The tempo has been steadier and the risk has come down. Jamie Smith, especially, is looking for a big one here, and Brook, who does have a triple to his name too, might be looking to make this ton a big one. The initial breakthroughs give India hope even today, but they are losing the grip of not only this session but their first innings total too. Shubman Gill is looking a bit baffled, and his moves are looking a bit confused at this point. he would be hoping the drinks break will allow the side to settle down.

Both Siraj and Akash Deep have come into a spell here. The ball is 59 overs old, and it will be interesting to see if there is any reverse on offer for either of the bowlers. It has been a dry summer here in England, and given the flatness of the wicket, India could do with a bit of reverse. While Akash's skills with the old ball are still to be know, Siraj definitely is a superb exponent of the art if it does exist. Once again, the bowling plan needs to complement the field, which has been a bit of a mismatch. While bowlers have tried to execute to the field it has not worked quite well since Smith has come in.

One thing noticeable with Shubman Gill is his field settings have been a tad bit defensive, which is understandable with the rate at which England is scoring; however, there have been times the slips are not enough to take edges. For instance, Nitish Kumar Reddy has been given a very white ball field. Yes, he is not one of the main bowlers, but just to not having any close in fielders to create something is kind of an odd move. With his pace, Nitish can get a few chop-ons hence, having a leg-slip or having a close-in mid-on just to wicket might not be a bad strategy.

Nitish Kumar Reddy has come to a spell here, he has bowled a solitary over yesterday. One good thing about the lineup India has picked up is that they have options to use. Although Nitish might not be as skilful as the other bowlers, he does have the knack of picking wickets. Also, both Brook and Smith, who have been pretty fluent so far, might need a bit of time to get adjusted to his style bowling and also their lapse in concentration and to will to attack might just bring up a wicket. One thing India has done well here after the break is they have controlled the tempo of the batting.

The English middle-order batter Brook has reached his ton here. He has played a magnificent innings. When he came into the middle, the ball was swinging around, and he managed it well and right now with the partnership with Smith, he is threatening England to take a very good position. The rate at which runs are being scored here, if these two continue to bat till the end of the session, England will reach around 400-mark, which will create panic in the Indian camp. Right now there just seems to be lack of leadership of someone like Bumrah in the middle in the pace attack.

Sundar and Krishna have started the session for India here in the middle. They need to bring in more control, while Sundar has been okayish in the first session, Krishna has been quite erratic. The short ball tactics have not worked at all. However, in the first over bowled here, Krishna has been given a couple of slips and it seems like the emphasis is on bowling more of a natural length than the bumper barrage. However, the only runs that can be stopped here are if India manages to pick wicket and break this partnership, because at this moment this partnership is looking threatening and seems like they are going to take England closer to India.

Both the players are in the middle it is going to be an intriguing session this one. Both Smith and Brook are well set and the pressure is put back onto the bowlers the onus is now on the Indian team to get the control.

“Im not too sure what England will be thinking. I hope Ben Stokes is thinking, ‘we should’ve batted first’,” he said on TMS, adding that English bowling (largely due to Gill’s glorious runs) worried him. “The way that England bowled today was a slight concern. There were a few things I saw in the field which made me think this looks a bit ominous going forward,” he said.

Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and R Ashwin retired from international cricket earlier in 2025, leaving Ravindra Jadeja as the "last man standing" from their generation of Indian cricketers who debuted between 2011 and 2013. Right at the end of that session, Jamie Smith brought up his 100. It is a magnificent innings from the English keeper. That is what the Bazball approach looked like when it started It used to be Jonny Bairstow who played innings of this ilk It seems like they have got a successor now. As per Harry Brook, it has been a steady innings from him; he kept his tempo and punished anything which was in his zone. Although batting-wise Gill has taken the responsibility to captaincy only, it is his on-field tactics which still need to improve. We will be right back after the break do stay with us.

We are closing on Lunch break here, both Smith and Brook have put on a 150-run stand here. When this partnership got together, England were in quite a bit of pickle; however, Smith started to counter punch and the partnership just kept growing at a brisk pace.

With both spinners operating this will present a different style of challenge for both Brook and Jamie Smith however, it is important that both Sundar and Jadeja flight the ball up and slow it down as the evidence thus far in this Test match suggests that the slower the ball is bowled there is some turn and grip while Sundar is what one might call a orthodox off-spinner and bowls at that pace Jadeja tends to rush it through. India would want him to slow it down with two right-handers in the middle, who have hardly faced him bowling quicker, and letting those singles away constantly will not help.

One of the pivotal moments of this session came in when Gill decided to swap Siraj's ends. The Hyderabdi was bowling with beautiful rhtyhm and bending his back his natural length which has sutied this wicket and the end from which he was bowling did have had some uneven bounce and for some reason, Gill brought in Krishna from that end and started to make the bumpers instead of letting the lanky fast bowler bowl his natural length which would have been good enough to exploit the uneven bounce. Since that moment, the complexion of this session has changed completely. England does have all the momentum, India almost killed England in this game, yet an error and some exceptional batting ensure they have a fighting chance.

This is not going anywhere for India, it is not just the runs that are being conceded here, but also the load bowlers' bodies will take. The wicket has nothing in it, and this is not a good move from Gill as captain. The way the partnership is going on he might need Prasidh to bowl a few overs today, and in this Test match, the bumper barrage for a couple more overs might just affect his efficiency in pace and accuracy down the game. This just might be one of those phases where Gill should deploy both his tweakers and go to break and reassess as of now the young skipper is going through motions.

The short ball strategy from Prasidh is not working at the moment. The field is there for him to support, but the pace from him is not there, and also this is very tiring on the body. 33 overs into the innings, it just might be too early for Gill to turn to this tactic. While a bumper from someone like Prasidh is a good thing but he still has a lot of lovely attributes as a bowler, especially bowling his natural length, will work exceptionally well on this wicket. Hitting hard lengths and looking to extract that extra bit of bounce from this end might be the ideal way to go, but this now is just too much give away of runs and energy of the bowler for too little reward.

Prasidh in that over tried to pitch the ball short, and the plan was telegraphed, to Jamie Smith, who accepted the challenge and went after the bowling and squeezed 23 runs. This partnership is now just growing, but the runs are also coming at quite a brisk pace here in the middle. If Shubman Gill was not worried before, he will be worried now. He has to turn to spin immediately, not just to see if there is a turn, but to test the techniques of these two Englishmen and most importantly, bring some control into the game. Since Smith has come on, he has certainly injected momentum into the innings.

Harry Brook has played quite well here. Though wickets kept falling from the other end, he maintained a good tempo and got to his half-century. When he did come into bat, things were quite tricky. The ball was seaming around and Brook had to go through the tough phase, which he did, and in the last 20 minutes or so, he has been a lot more assured in his driving and square cutting to get some runs away. However, the demand from here in this game is not just to get a century but a double ton and hope someone also chips in with 100 so that they can get anywhere closer to the Indian total.

Prasidh Krishna has been brought into the attack, and it is an important spell for him. Although he did pick wickets in the first game he did went for plenty of runs but today or in this game he has to show something if he has to retain his spot at Lord's with Bumrah likely to return for the game and given how impressive Akash Deep has been today Prasidh has to bag a few wickets now. Also, he has the advantage because the damage has already been done by the new ball bowlers, and if he sticks to his guns and bowls his natural areas, wickets will start coming as we update, Brook gets to 50.

One thing Indian bowlers did well yesterday and today is the lengths they have bowled right away. Apart from Chris Woakes in the English attack when they had new ball in hand they tried to pitch the ball up looking for some moment and got driven consistently and when they tried to pull back Brydon Carse especially ended up too short with the new ball burst although things got better as innings went on the Indians did not commit a similar mistake right from the word go they bowled in and around the hard length region and extracted the most out of this surface. So far, so good for the Indians, also all the bowlers picked have the tendency to bowl that as their natural length. 

This is quite a puzzling performance from England. It has been a tremendous wicket to bat on, although India did find a bit of moment with the new ball, but as a Test top order one is expected to deal with that amount of moment. It is increasingly difficult to see how England will escape this game. With Root and Brook in the middle at the start of the day, there would have been some hope, but it did vanish quickly. It is an opportunity for young Jamie Smith to showcase his skills and keep the Indian bowlers out in the heat for a few sessions apart from For England to reach anywhere near 150 runs closer to India will need a 200 from either of the batters in the middle

Well, that was some over from Mohammed Siraj. First, it was Joe Root who was trying to play one down the leg-side, brushed it to Rishabh Pant, and Ben Stokes walked in. Siraj followed it up with a lethal bumper, which took the feather to the keeper. England are five down with more than 450 runs to get. It is not just the loss of wickets; they have lost them in clusters. It has happened twice yesterday when Pope and Duckett went off consecutive deliveries, now it is Root and Stokes. Siraj usually tends to start with this sort of rhythm becomes extremely dangerous and can run through the opposition sides.

Well, that's not the start India wanted in their opening over. Akash Deep overstepped a few times and ended up bowling a half-volley on the leg-stump, which Root flicked for a boundary. We have seen England making the same mistake yesterday, they were a bit late to gauge the conditions, and by the time they realised what might be a good play, India were far ahead in the game. Although on the other hand India has managed to get a head start by picking three early wickets, all this can change pretty quickly if they don't keep chipping away, especially with the likes of Joe Root and Harry Brook, who love to bat with each other.

The sun is shining yet again, and the Indian team is in a hurdle. It looks like a batting day yet again, and whoever starts off for India here needs to bowl with discipline, because given the nature of the wicket and the quality of the batters, this game can slip away from India quite quickly.

The keywords I would use are evolve and refine. At times initially it was quite extreme. My view is that you need to go through those extremes to realise where the balance is. Play with a fearless nature, have lots of fun and be entertaining, which is good for the game. But they are judged by results. I don’t think it’s complete (refinement), but I think it’s a long way further forward than it was a year or two ago. I think now what you see is that there are periods where they do absorb pressure rather than just keep being ultra-aggressive when under pressure. They are a very tough side to play against.

England's "Bazball" Test cricket strategy, characterized by aggressive, high-scoring rates, makes it difficult for opposing teams like India to win, even when taking all 20 wickets. England's ability to maintain a rapid scoring pace, and even win matches despite being bowled out, means that simply getting them out is not enough. Opponents must also contain their runs. India is set to make three changes for the second Test against England to improve team balance, especially on a potentially spin-friendly pitch. Washington Sundar, an all-rounder who bats lower down the order, will replace Sai Sudharsan at No. 3, with Karun Nair likely moving to Sudharsan's previous spot. Nitish Reddy, another all-rounder, comes in for Shardul Thakur. Lastly, fast bowler Akash Deep will replace Jasprit Bumrah, who is being rested to manage his workload. “We won’t (regret). I don’t think you reflect on what’s happened. Hindsight’s hindsight. We decided to bowl and we’ll stick by that. On the first day it showed enough for us and we created a lot of opportunities and it didn’t go our way. The day might’ve looked different yesterday and this morning if we got those decisions,” 

“I mainly worked on my initial movement and my setup. Before this, I felt my batting was going well. I was scoring 30-35-40 runs consistently in Test matches. But at some point, I was missing that peak concentration time. A lot of people say that when you focus too much, you sometimes miss your peak time.

“So, in this series, I tried to go back to my basics. I tried to bat like I used to in my childhood. I didn’t think about having reached 35-40 runs or about playing long innings. I just wanted to enjoy my batting.”

“So far in this Bazball era England either blow teams away, chase brilliant or they get hammered,” he said at close on Day 2 on Test Match Special. “They don’t play the boring draw because they’ve never had to.”

However this new triad of possibilities brings with it some amount of uncertainty extending to cluelessness of how the psychedelic pattern might unfold. “I’ll be intrigued to see what happens if England lose a few quick ones tomorrow and if they think we have to dig deep,” Vaughan said.

“This message means a lot to me. I think, growing up, I played almost all of my cricket for my dad, in the sense that it was because of him that I started playing. And the only person besides him is my best friend, whom I practised with. These are the only two people, when it comes to my cricket, that I care about and that I listen to,” shared Gill in the video.

“It means a lot coming from him. But he did also tell me that I missed my triple century. Hopefully, we’ll end this match on a great note,” shared Gill while talking with BCCI in a video released on BCCI’s social media on Friday.

Hello and welcome to our live blog of the second Test between India and England. It is Day 3, and as they call it, it is the moving day in Test matches, and the game too is in kind of right balance. England's premium batters are out in the middle, and the ball has lost a bit of shine. It can go either way from here, do stay with us through the noo and evening. We have Sandeep Dwivedi and the ground who will give all the updates, and meanwhile, we will give our analysis on the matters happening on the field.
